Unless he already got passed on the depth chart by a frosh but I doubt the staff conveyed that to him already.

Perhaps it was sort of along these lines, like Studstill and Perry were told they would play immediately, and Williams doesn't like seeing the evidence of the future order of things?

Don't think that's it. It has been brewing since before the spring apparently

Fan boy theory- They will finally move Butler to safety putting Williams behind guys like Dru, Avery, Nicco, and Devin. He sees this and gets out giving him plenty of time to develop at a new school.

Him transferring is bizzare. Now he is gonna have to sit out another year wherever he goes. Maybe it's a sign that guys like Perry and Studstill are the real deal. With Studstill, Perry, Max, Sebastian, and tranquil he could have been back burried on the depth chart.

Wow, this is fucked. ND really needs to find kids that are willing to wait there turn and put in the time. Two ways you win. Build a roster through keeping players around 4-5 years like Stanford or recruiting the elite talent that is ready to play within 2-3 years like OSU/Bama.

From the outside this looks pretty stupid to do now, especially with our depth chart. Unless he already got passed on the depth chart by a frosh but I doubt the staff conveyed that to him already.

Are you hearing the reason is playing time?

Loy sucks, 247 is awful. If you knew two months ago then freaking tell your subs. What a worthless service.

I'm sure that's what ND coaches and the player want while they work out the details and decide if he's actually going to follow through with the transfer...

No, when I say put in the time, I mean the classroom as well. These prospects have to be willing to work hard in the classroom while they wait for their turn to play, seems like quite a few don't get that.

We've waisted a lot of room in recruiting classes.

Scout: Mykelti Williams exits Irish

Sophomore safety Mykelti Williams is no longer part of the Irish program, Brian Kelly revealed Wednesday after the Indianapolis product missed practice.

Notre Dame’s safety competition added some clarity on Wednesday.

Sophomore Mykelti Williams missed the morning practice and afterward head coach Brian Kelly revealed that the product of Warren Central in Indianapolis was no longer part of the program. Williams, a late addition to his recruiting class two years ago, had yet to play a snap for Notre Dame after taking a red-shirt last season.

Williams was still part of the program last week when the Irish opened spring ball.

Kelly declined to reveal any specifics of Williams’ departure.

Down Williams, Notre Dame’s safety pairings on Wednesday opened with Max Redfield-Drue Tranquill, Nicco Fertitta-Avery Sebastian and Devin Studstill-Spencer Perry in that order during the first portion of practice.

However, Kelly said Studstill has been running with the first team much of the past week at free safety, meaning he’s in direct competition with Redfield for a starting job.

Unlike Redfield, who often frustrated with the coaching staff the past three years, Studstill appears to have won over the coaches immediately.

“He’s just a natural player. It comes easy to him,” Kelly said. “Just flows easily to him. It’s not hard to him. He’s had no set back in terms of the learning curve. He had one mistake today, but it really comes easy to him.”

We are down to literally one experienced safety that has no significant injury history. And half the board and the coaching staff hates him.

Wow, I heard Studstill was good, but he's pushing Redfield for playing time? Not that Redfield has been a world beater either, but he's experienced. That's impressive for a freshman.

Need to get someone else snaps at SS ASAP!!!! Tranquill and Avery cannot be the only options ahead of Perry as neither have shown any ability to play an entire season of football.

I think the staff/fans need to make peace with Redifeld at FS. SS is a nightmare (not that it was in great shape prior to this transfer) and we need to stick with the only experienced guy at FS and try to find someone to step up at SS.

I'm just really glad we told Hamiln we were full at DB after Pride committed. You know...so we had room for Caleb Kelly, McCulloch, and D-Rob and I'm really glad Turner and Williams didn't transfer for even more room to add a high end DB like Hamlin. Lets not forget Hounshell getting denied his sixth year and every guy that was considering leaving for the draft doing just that.

JUST TAKE THE ELITE GUYS! WE ALWAYS HAVE ROOM! ALWAYS! I know it's a constant gripe here but geesh!

Not saying Damar was a slam dunk but I know he was considering us heavily and I remember reports saying he would have been Irish if we didn't tell him we were full after Pride committed. And don't get me wrong...I'm extremely happy to have Pride, I just don't get why we ever tell elite recruits like Hamlin to look elsewhere cuz we're full...we're never full.

I wish Mykelti would have stayed but I kind of had the feeling that he wouldn't be a huge contributor when he committed. Anyway...good luck to Mykelti wherever he ends up.

Here is a question, why are we getting so worked up over a guy who hasn't even played a signal down of college football? Maybe he just isn't that good.

For those wondering about SS...I think Tranquill will be very good there (except for the injury concerns that some have already noted) and if not I think Max would be a good SS. He's always played well in the box and in run support cleaning up after Joe or someone else missed a tackle. His weakness has always been in coverage and blowing assingments...the main thing a FS needs to be good at. Basically, he seems to have the body and athletic traits of a FS but better style of play to be a SS. So if Studstill really is pushing for first team reps at FS then moving Max to SS doesn't seem like a bad idea to me.

And in emergency situations, if we have to move Max back to FS then so be it...he's practiced there for 3 years. But I think the best combo going forward would be to train the young guys (Studstill, Elliot, etc.) at FS and hope Drue can stay healthy at SS and cross train Max at both safety spots as the just in case guy since I think he would be a better SS anyway since he can't grasp the coverage assignments of FS.

Just my admittedly uneducated assessment on the safety situation.

you could still bring baratti and turner back right?

I know Turner already announced that he's transferring elsewhere for his 5th year of eligibility. Plus, I think he was playing more LB in his later years here. Wish him nothing but the best as well...seems like a great kid and loves ND, he just wanted to be able to play in his last year.

I don't know for sure about Baratti but I think he's done too.
