Interesting you bring that up... We need to have this discussion in the Max thread because this isn't the first time I've heard this brought up in the past week.

I know this isn't the thread for it but Max to SS could be a very good idea. The guy tackles better than he covers. Assuming we can find someone else to play free. (I actually had KVR penciled in there in my head. Oh well...)

I just want to say that I said this after the USC game. He looks much more comfortable close to the LOS.

What is OFD talking about? Developmental project? He's basically penciled in to start right now and was heavily recruited to the wire against Ohio State. He was not some raw athlete being converted into a defensive back.

There are very few scenarios where he doesn't start besides Redfield returning and moving to SS with Studstill starting opposite him, or MAYBE Sebastian could beat him out.

Does "heavily" recruited by Ohio State mean no offer and, what was it, one visit to Columbus a couple months before being offered by ND? I know that sold everyone on Williams!

He could be a developmental project just like nearly all young safeties at Notre Dame. What's so controversial about that? Redfield and Shumate weren't all that ready and developed in their second years on campus, both more highly rated, and saw the field as freshmen.

We sure as heck didn't recruit him as a stud safety on our board otherwise there wouldn't have been 10 months of radio silence after he visited for Junior Day. The reactions here to his commitment, especially, didn't indicate someone who definitely wasn't going to take some time to develop.

Seems pretty odd to think this is a super hot take unless you just saw an opportunity to drop the "insider" knowledge that Redfield might not be back. That's probably it.

I'm starting to think you go by Rocket not because he was your favorite player, but because you spit fire. You're always coming in all guns a blazing.

Though if I recall, you write for OFD?

He was very close to actually playing this year and was on the verve of having his red shirt burned...then bk thought Better of it...but said he was ready if called upon

He was visited by Ohio State coaches in the weeks leading up to NSD and they tried to get him to flip. All of that is documented in this thread.

I know that OFD has some heavy support from some important people on this site, so I know I risk some backlash when I say that I sometimes wonder if they're even writing about Notre Dame football.

The fact that he is going to start has to do more with our situation than his status. We have ZERO depth. Kelly and company have proven that they do not like to start young kids that have so little experience, no matter how much talen they have. If he starts, its because their aren't other options.

On the other hand, he was a Top 250 DB, not some baskeball player or Australian immigrant that we are making into a DE.

Sitll, I think the reaction to "developmental project" is overkill. If the kid was a sure prospect, they would have gotten him on the field this year methinks.

True, sometimes they write about ND basketball, or ND Lacrosse

I'm generally a fan of OFD because they write about more than football. The other sites (II, ISD, B&G, and 247) spend about 90-95% of their time on football with the remaining 5-10% on basketball. I think OFD does a good job mixing spot coverage of the others sports (hockey, lacrosse, soccer, etc.) but I'd also be lying if I said I read/shared any of their other content besides the lacrosse... I can't even say with certitude which other sports they cover and with what frequency. So I understand why other sites don't invest the money in covering the equivalency sports.

I think OFD's great. They may lack the professionalism, and access/inside-the-program sources of the pay sites, the South Bend Tribine or Keith Arnold/Matt Fortuna. But they more than make up for it with creativity and depth.
As for whether Williams is a "developmental" prospect or not, who cares? He's on our two-deep now either way. But he was not an elite recruit and didn't make the depth chart as a freshman, so it seems fair to say he showed up with work to do.

I like OFD. I check out their site about once a week, mainly for the recruiting content. But I've also noticed that many times it appears they get some of their info directly from this board.

I think their piece on Williams was fair. It will be interesting to follow his progress this spring. I hope he's ready to contribute in 2016, but also wouldn't be surprised if he was still a year away.

Welp, relying on freshmen on the back-end for sure now. That's cool.

Even if he was unhappy, really bizarre timing on his part. The beginning of spring is probably the worst time I can think of for a player to transfer.

Good luck to him, but this is pretty shitty news to start the day. I liked his film and now we have have to get BGIF a helmet for the 2 deep.

disappointing if true, he's a big physical safety that I thought would do well at ND.

Wow, this is fucked. ND really needs to find kids that are willing to wait there turn and put in the time. Two ways you win. Build a roster through keeping players around 4-5 years like Stanford or recruiting the elite talent that is ready to play within 2-3 years like OSU/Bama.

From the outside this looks pretty stupid to do now, especially with our depth chart. Unless he already got passed on the depth chart by a frosh but I doubt the staff conveyed that to him already.

I'll bet putting BGIF back there could get Max on track.
