Oregon State defensive coordinator Kalani Sitake has agreed to a deal to become BYU's next head coach, a source confirmed to ESPN's Joe Schad.
Sitake, 40, played four years at BYU as a fullback and graduated in 2000. He spent the past year as Oregon State's defensive coordinator after serving as an assistant at Utah from 2005 to 2014.
Oregon State struggled defensively this season under Sitake, ranking 116th out of 128 FBS teams in total defense.
If the deal is completed, Sitake would replace Bronco Mendenhall, who was hired earlier this month by Virginia after spending the past 11 years at BYU.
Based on the article segment above, Sitake doesn't seem like a home run hire for BYU. A DC from a team that was at the bottom of the FBS defensively? Maybe he's an awesome recruiter? How much emphasis does BYU place on their HC hire being Mormon?

I am not going to bore you with all the details but yes, you have to be a Mormon to be the coach, and in good standing with the church (I.E. being a "good mormon")
That being said it's hard for BYU to make a homer hire. Who wants to recruit at a school where you can't drink, smoke, or have sex? If you do you're thrown out. Second you're in the middle of nowhere recruiting. Utah doesn't really produce elite talent and if they do , they always seem to go elsewhere (porter gustin for example.) Recruiting kids who want to serve missions for two years is also a headache trying to play with the numbers and plan around it. And to top that all off, they honestly get paid like 600,000 a year with perks. The church runs the school and they make sure to show that there is no emphasis on sports over anything else. These are just a few of the problems and I could go on for hours. Now tell me, who would want to coach in that situation?
No drinking or sex... I'M OUT!
What the heck ... Jim McMahon managed.
Don Brown Hired as Michigan DC

I am under the impression that being Mormon is a requirement, not sure if that is true though.
NM missed th 5:41 post..>~
Skunkbears appear to be set on hiring BC's DC Don Brown.
Fuuuuu.
Rumor that Durkin and the Terps are flirting with Joey Freshwater as their OC.
Why would he leave Bama for that tire fire of a program?
Yup. UM and SC with homerun (IMO) DC hires and he we are with BVG...

MiltonBetter to reign in Hell, than serve in Heaven.
Well, when you put it that way, it doesn't sound like a great job.
Looks like the Terps grabbed Ark State's OC. Guess Joey Freshwater had too much swag for them Terps.
