Projections are way too high for him to come back. Seems like the kind of kid that will get his degree, and have a great pro career. Exactly the kind of kid you want, good luck to him!

...Didn't know that...so the 2 X is for what is in the rear view mirror. I thought he was thinking about staying at ND...or just messing with people. Either way the kid is ready for Sundays, and his stock is high...I'd be hard pressed to come up with a good enough reason to stay.

It's really just his legacy at this point. He leaves now and people will remember him as one of the best to play for ND but who was never on an elite ND team. He stays for one more season, and he can supplant himself as more of an ND legend and one of the best college LBs of all time. And even that probably isn't worth putting of the NFL for one year.

Yup. If you're projected to be a late-round pick who may or may not make a team, I say stay in school and get your degree. If you're projected to go in the first round and make guaranteed millions in your first year year, then go get paid. It's the Zuckerberg argument. Yes, a Harvard degree is valuable. But Facebook is a billion times more valuable.

Personally, the only reason I can see for him to come back is if he is one of those guys that wants to take advantage of this time as a kid. Have one more year as a young person to live the college life and give it one more go at a NC with and for his teammates. It is somewhat rare, but you do hear this from time to time.

Otherwise, I really don't see how he can improve his stock much unless it is something like he becomes the Joe Schmidt of the D and the pros see how well he runs the entire D.

Zuckerberg is worth about as much as the entire NFL, Facebook much more so. The comparison doesn't really hold.

It's like in kind if not in degree. If someone gave me a one-time payment of $2M to drop out sophomore year, I would have done it in a heartbeat. Invested well, $2M would outpace my earning potential by a good clip. And Jaylon is going to make a hell of a lot more than a one-time payment of $2M.

Agreed. There is no economic or football reason for him to stay. But that doesn't mean there aren't other reasons to stay. It just depends on the young man involved and what he wants out of the next year of his life. The NFL will still be there a year from now. Jaylon really can't go wrong either way.

Sure he could. He could come back and have a career-ending injury next season.

Got second team AA on FWAA All-American team. Complete joke, will cost him unanimous AA honors (which are very rare).

Joe Schobert and Matakevich were the two LBs who made 1st team who you haven't seen on many 1st teams to this point. Also, they had THREE RBs on the first team.

Matakevich won the Bednarik and the Nagurski so it's hard to argue with First Team. Jaylon's zero interceptions to Matakevich's five is a tough comparison.

This might be an unpopular opinion and/or completely unrealistic, but I had the thought more than a few times during the season that Jaylon should have been playing in the middle in Joes' spot, just to maximize his effectiveness.

Of course, that might be unrealistic because then you're relying on Coney to start, but there were countless opportunities for Joe to make plays against the pass or on the blitz that Jaylon probably cashes in on (especially the blitzing opportunities).

There's also the fact that Joe probably doesn't have some of those opportunities to blitz if not for Jaylon on the outside, and that Jaylon might not have been able to call the defense like Joe, but it's still interesting to think about.

I get what you are saying but to me that has more to do with scheme than personnel or the best fit for Jaylon/the player. For the most part, I think you should tailor a defense to your strengths, not just what the scheme says to do. BVG chose to use Jaylon the way that he did. It resulted in a high number of tackles (can't argue with that) but not as many impact plays (sacks, TFL's) as he could've in a different scheme. No doubt in my mind that Jaylon could excel spending more time on getting into the backfield than cleaning everything up but it wasn't my call and at this point we have no idea if that would've been the case.

Assuming Jaylon's not an idiot, he (or Notre Dame) would take out a pre-draft insurance policy and still walks away with a few million dollars. Also earns his degree.

That is a lot more complicated than it sounds.

He has worked his whole life to be excellent enough at one thing that people are willing to pay him handsomely to do it. He will not be excellent for very long and he won't be able to make money doing it for very long. TAKE YOUR MONEY ASAP!

The A&M lineman in that story didn't suffer a "career ending injury." He dropped maybe ten spots in the draft, earned an $8.5 million signing bonus and has a long and potentially very lucrative career ahead of him. The Oregon corner who was mentioned later on dropped from a first round projection to a late-round pick, got a $3 million insurance payment (and his degree), and is spending this year rehabbing his knee on IR with the Browns.
Not bad on either count.
I agree the insurance isn't as simple as it's sometimes made out to be, and I'd hope Notre Dame would cover the cost in this case. And if Jaylon simply wants to get paid, he by all means ought to. Good for him. But it's not crazy to stay, and the insurance policy makes it easier to do so with some peace of mind.

True, but consensus still something to be EXTREMELY proud of.
