Dudes. Could you imagine if the playoff was Alabama, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Ohio State (or Michigan)? It just hit me that that's a legitimate possibility. That would be... I can't even...

go on... because this scenario would pretty much suck ass from an ND fan perspective imo...

I think we beat any of them at 11-1 and I don't think it's close. But 12-0 is a definite possibility, which is why I'm rooting against Clemson. There's value in having a path to number 2 or 3 just in case one of our preferred scenarios to number 4 doesn't play out. Everyone is relying on the Big 12 to cannibalize, but if that doesn't happen we may be screwed. I think the "backup plan" is Clemson dropping and taking the ACC out of the playoff conversation all together.

...except Clemson. Their status as a team ranked ahead of us is more important than their status as a team we played hard in the rain on the road. Sacrificing the latter in order to eliminate the former is a trade I'd like to see happen. A lot of you guys are acting like losing by two to 11-1 Clemson in a hurricane somehow becomes a shitty loss in the eyes of the committee.

Which is more likely, the Big 12 cannibalizing each other, or Clemson running the table?
Clemson is currently listed as an 82% chance at running the table, Baylor is listed as something like 8% and I imagine TCU/OK St are somewhere there at 8% or worse too. It's college football, and certainly anything could and probably will happen like Clemson losing their QB and completely tanking. The smart bet is for us to get in over an 11-1 Big 12 champ and Stanford as the PAC-12 champ.

If by "suck" you would mean an explosion of awesomeness, then yeah it would totally suck ass. Those are arguably the biggest college football powers of all time (excepting USC). Ratings and hype would be through the roof.

I would party like it's 1975.

I think Clemson is obviously much more likely to win out than any one Big 12 team, but there are three Big 12 teams that have a shot and we need all three to falter. These also aren't mutually exclusive. It's not like I/we have to root for Clemson to lose OR for the Big 12 to cannibalize. I want both to happen just in case the other doesn't.

Also, that 82% metric is bunk. Clemson doesn't even have an 82% chance of beating FSU.

Yeah, screw that noise, I'd want no part of that. Best scenario for us is probably LSU, Clemson, and Iowa, but I can't see Iowa upsetting MSU or tOSU. I think LSU will probably lose to 'Bama too.

For me, I would party when ND wins a title... putting us against Bama and to a lesser degree tOSU significantly lessens that probability... I think ND can beat just about any team in the country on their best day, with maybe the exception of bama...

I want a playoff of ND, MSU, Clemson and Carnegie Mellon....

All of the Blue Bloods.

Once it goes to 8 teams:

Bama, ND, Ohio State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas, USC, ________.

Who is the 8th?

You remind me of everyone that was cheering the night Oregon and Kansas State both lost in 2012, not even realizing that Alabama was waiting to join us in the national championship picture. Of course, some people were saying "I want 'Bama" too. No thanks.

Nebraska?

I was thinking Nebraska but

This.

The first one that honestly came to mind was LSU. Maybe Florida State?

Idk, that 8th spot can be a wild card for all I care.

It would take a cosmic miracle or Divine Intervention for the Blue Bloods to all be elevated enough to be playoff teams, and for it to happen at the same time no less.

Yup, cause that worked so well in 2012.

Not saying we can't win, both teams are very different compared to where they were in 2012, but they've certainly still have the benefit when it comes to depth.

I believe Tennessee would be next in line after Nebraska... over Army, LSU, or anyone else mentioned... no?

We're pretty close if you designate the "wildcard" slot the ACC, which doesn't really have a blue blood. Texas is the only team that's down. USC had some wonky losses but they're top-10 talented.

Yeah Tennessee would be a good one.

I don't think there is a "right" answer and I didn't mean to start a debate. It was meant to be a fun fill-in-the-blank lol.

I would personally probably go with LSU based on recent history.

Tennessee would be my next pick and would be based on a-bit-older history.

And like Jayhawk said, if you really wanted to go back, you could pick someone like Army/Navy back when they dominated year-to-year.

What is the irony of a bunch of people born after our last championship having this discussion?

You're not allowed in my fantasy prognosticating. You want ND to schedule Bryn Mawr and shit.

greatest 8 team playoff ever...

Notre Dame, Carnegie Mellon, Kalamazoo, Army, Yale, Butler, Great Lakes Architectural College, Samford.

Like Al Davis used to say, "Just Win Baby."

Hey casserole, just because I was born after 1988 doesn't mean I don't have an appreciation for CFB history.

(It's easy to pick the traditional powers up to #7... after that, it depends on how "modern" your college football-based beliefs are.)

What does it mean if I think that Big 12 football is an abomination before the Lord and the full house backfield gives me a semi?
