For your consideration :
- BK's teams do extremely well after bye weeks.
- This years team doesn't seem to fall for the same kind of emotional letdowns as Kelly teams past;
- ND covered all but one game; that includes Navy (a second triple option team for the season) probably the best Middies squad Kelly has faced, the week prior to USC.
- The one win ND didn't cover was VA; that game I believe turned on Malik's ankle, pardon the painful pun, but at that point ND could have well gone on to cover, breaks aside.
- ND didn't have as many slow starts or mistakes in the red zone as any year past; but ND has played teams this year that came out like beasts! What would have happened to past squads that had to deal with the NA, Clem, or USC starts?
- MAYBE MOST IMPORTANTLY; DeShone Kizer is taking over leadership of this team. Kelly pointed it out. So have others. My most consistent "Pro-Kizer" theme, being a homey homer is this kids leadership ability. Malik has it, and it is easy to see in a regular sort of way. Kizer has it in a spiritual, mystical, St Joan of Arc sort of way. DeShone starts doing his thing, and legions fall in to build a cohesive army. I am telling you I have never seen anyone make others better than DK when he has really assumed leadership.
- THE NEW THEME IS : You better start impressing people. The time for just winning is over. You need to play above your best to win decisively, to have a shot at your goals. I bet this is more than just a random thought in the IRISH locker room!
So if I have any feel for the pulse of this game, and this team this season, ND will come out hot. Further I think it will be Kizer to Fuller, Brown, St. Brown or Hunter long. Might be to CJ long, out of the backfield.
I wouldn't be surprised to see double tight end sets, with fewer receivers streaking long, and play action to arrest the safeties. Just my feeling. But wtf do I know?
ND 28 Temple 3, first quarter.
