Is Kelly a REALLY good coach?

Headline: How We Stack Up

C'mon, this is obviously a recruiting tweet meant to get the kiddos excited. It's not 100% dishonest but they knew the spin they were putting on it.

How is it even 1% dishonest? The obvious implication is that Kelly knows how to develop talent. He's currently the HC at ND. Seems like an easily defensible recruiting tool for our program.

I have no problem with it. But you really think that tweet was sent out NOT intending to imply that there are five NDers in the Pro Bowl?

I guess it depends on how you interpret the "we" in "HOW WE STACK UP". If it's referring to the NDFB coaching staff, then it's 100% defensible. If it's referring to NDFB program, then it's still 99% defensible, because Kelly is our current HC.

And it seems pretty clear from the context that it's referring to the staff. The tweet reads, "Congratulations to @CoachBrianKelly", and the graphic reads "Coach Kelly will watch five former players in the 2015 NFL Pro Bowl" (most of any college coach in America). If the intent was to obscure the distinction between ND and Kelly, they could have done a much better job.

Pretty misleading IMO, but if it makes someone take a harder look, misleading works for me.

Man you'll bitch about anything won't you? I bet waiters love you at restaurants.

Let's turn nothing into a big deal!

Wow, some people really want to find something wrong with everything "their school" does.
Problem with the reading comprehension around here?

I have no problem with it.

I don't know if there is anyone on the other side of this...

But I don't believe that Martin, Harry Smith, and Eifert were sure fire first rounders before he got here.

Not to mention that players like Riddick, Blanton, and Shembo have already made considerable contributions to their teams...

Jonas Gray would be league MVP if he played...against the Colts every game.

Oh ok. Thanks. So he just recruited him (for TE?) right?

I guess. Honestly don't have a clue. Just did a quick Wiki search of them both. I would imagine BK did recruit him though so he did see something in him. That counts for something. lol

Random thoughts I haven't had the time to post over the last few days:

Barring any major surprises tomorrow, we are looking at another very good class. Coach and staff should be congratulated for it. With that said, I think that this class sums up BK's time at ND.......getting results, but still leaving stuff on the table. I can't help but shake the feeling that instead of being about the 10th ranked class, it could have been closer to 5th.

I know the excuse for Sunday was a contractual obligation, but that seems strange to me. Why would NBC Super Bowl coverage and events be enhanced by BK? Plus, if he had the contract obligation, would they have really scheduled the Junior Day like they did? My hunch is that he was trying to accomplish one of three things:
1 - Cooks leaving left a void and with his penchant for hiring NFL guys (Harry, BVG) combined with his DC being an NFL guy, he was out there testing the waters for finding a staff member.
2 - 2015 is really the make or break year for BK and he knows it. If he has success in 2015 at a high level, it may be his last shot at the NFL and he is working on those communication lines.
3 - He is a Pats junkie
My money is more on 1 and 2.

Not BK specific, but my god Sunday's outcome was delicious. I had no dog in the fight and I really don't care for either team, so whoever lost would have made me happy. But seeing ole Pete being a goat that will be remembered for generations brings joy.

From an article on SB Nation discussing top recruiting teams and how it must now translate to more wins.

Notre Dame: Win 10 or more games

You can count on one hand the number of teams who have outrecruited the Irish over the last four years. Two out of every three players signed by Brian Kelly in that time have been rated four-stars or better.

But last year Kelly's Irish lost five games for the third time in five seasons, and over the last two seasons, the Irish have dropped games against non-elite teams like Northwestern and a bad Michigan. Kelly is 45-20 and has only been in the title hunt one time in five seasons.

Teams who recruit at a super elite level win 10 games more often than not, and if the Irish can do that in 2015, the elite talent should keep flocking to South Bend.

So does that mean we have to wait yet another year to make a determination on whether or not he is a good coach?

He obviously is a GOOD coach, not sure he is an ELITE coach, which is what ND should be by now, considering all the elite talent we have been stockpiling.

Ten wins with all the season-ending injuries would be fantastic, but that should be minimum expectations for this year, when you look at how winnable the rest of our schedule is looking right now.

Best coach we can get. That's important to note. Vangorder stinks however.

Well, if we are still having this discussion after five seasons, and the best answer is "he is the best we can get", then that answers whether or not he is a REALLY good coach.

He certainly is not elite though.
