he two were sitting in class at St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, N.J., when the classmate read on Twitter that senior quarterback Everett Golson planned to graduate from Notre Dame later this month and leave for another school.
“I was really shocked,” said Wimbush, the soon-to-be Irish freshman quarterback. “It gives me an opportunity, which I’m excited for, but I’m kind of disappointed that he left because I wanted to be able to learn under him.”
With a four-star rating and a reputation as one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the country for the 2015 recruiting class, Wimbush’s ascent into Notre Dame’s quarterback competition was likely to happen at some point early in his career. The timetable shifted Thursday with the news of Golson’s departure.
Junior Malik Zaire is in line to take over the starting role as his did in December’s Music City Bowl win over LSU. Wimbush will join redshirt freshmen DeShone Kizer and Montgomery VanGorder in competition for the backup role.
“I wanted to redshirt,” Wimbush said. “I had the mindset of coming in and redshirting and being able to learn and get acclimated for a year. With this, my mind changed immediately. My mindset really did change quickly as soon as I heard it.”
Wimbush, a 6-foot-2, 212-pound quarterback who led his team to a state championship as a senior, kept a close eye on the quarterback competition throughout the spring and attended the Blue-Gold Game in April.
“They were competing and in the spring game, I thought Malik had a great game,” Wimbush said. “Malik did his thing and so did Everett. They both moved the ball well. It was anybody’s job to get or lose.”
Wimbush ditched his Penn State commitment early in his senior season after Notre Dame hosted him on an official visit for its win over Stanford in October. He prevented the Irish from missing out on a quarterback in the 2015 class after losing Blake Barnett’s verbal commitment to Alabama last June.
Vaulting Zaire might not be in the picture for Wimbush’s freshman season, but his polished skill set could allow him to become the next option off the bench. He finished his senior season completing 192 of his 265 passes (72 percent) for 3,187 yards and 37 touchdowns with just five interceptions. He also rushed for 723 yards and nine more touchdowns.
In his final semester at St. Peter’s Prep, Wimbush has been running track in addition to working twice weekly with private quarterback coach Madei Williams, who spent time backing up Donovan McNabb at Syracuse in the ‘90s. The focus on speed during track season has shown with Wimbush reporting his fastest times of 10.8 seconds in the 100-meter dash and 22 seconds in the 200.
“I’m keeping myself busy, but as a quarterback I don’t want to be throwing too much,” Wimbush said. “I’m focused on footwork and more mental stuff.”
His arrival on campus June 12 is rapidly approaching and now brings higher stakes.
“You want to come in with a mindset of being able to compete, but reality tells you to redshirt,” Wimbush said. “With this situation, it changed my mind. I’m going to delve deeper into what I have to do to get myself prepared.”

2015 quarterback signee Brandon Wimbush has been preparing himself for life at Notre Dame all offseason. The four-star signal caller is currently running track and his times might surprise you.
“My offseason has been good and I am running track this spring,” Wimbush told Irish Sports Daily. “I am trying to get myself in shape physically and mentally. I am running the 100m and the 200m sprints. My personal record in the 100m is a 10.8 and 22.3 in the 200m, which I actually ran on Monday.”
Track is only one part of Wimbush’s offseason. He has been training hard at MAD-QB Training led by Madei Williams. The two have worked together for quite some time and Williams is preparing his pupil for life at the Division-I level.
“He has been getting me ready for Notre Dame and understanding that when you are in the game, things change a lot,” said Wimbush. “He is preparing me mentally as much as possible with the playbook. Physically, we are doing as much as we can to get myself prepared.”
Most quarterbacks choose not the throw with pads during training, but the 6-foot-1, 215-pounder chooses to throw with his pads on at times. Wimbush takes improving his game seriously and is even fine-tuning his release.
“Throwing with the pads on is something that I like to do,” explained Wimbush. “I try to get a game feel and throw the ball with pads. It allows me to simply get used to feeling what I will be doing every day.
“I have been working on shortening up my release this offseason. I also have been working on not staring down my receivers and it goes back to preparing mentally.”
The recruiting experts have made comparison after comparison of who Wimbush reminds them of. The New Jersey native wants to create his own style, but does take a few things from a Green Bay Packer.
“I am trying to create my own mold as a quarterback,” he stated. “You can look at some NFL guys and say I looked and play like them, but I would say Aaron Rodgers for the most part.”
Over the past few weeks, the college football world has been centered around the transfer of Everett Golson. Golson’s transfer has had a direct impact on Wimbush and he is taking it as any competitor would.
“My mindset has changed since the news broke about Everett transferring,” Wimbush admitted. “When I learned about the information, my mindset went from redshirting to feeling like I could go in there and compete for the starting job or the backup spot.
“I expected to redshirt with the depth chart. I knew what I was getting into and I made my decision knowing what I was getting into.”
The St. Peter’s Prep star knows he is in a position of leadership and he understands the importance of leading his class on and off the gridiron.
“I am a vocal leader and I can lead by example,” he explained. “I am definitely working on being more vocal, because that is a huge part of leadership as a quarterback. I want to be a leader on and off the field.”
Notre Dame assistant coach Mike Sanford will lead the quarterback room and Wimbush knows his coach has been in his shoes before.
“My relationship with Coach Sanford is good,” said Wimbush. “I like what he brings to the table and he has a lot of success. I can’t wait to get to work with him, because he has been successful where he has been. It’s a great opportunity for me.”
Wimbush will arrive in South Bend in three weeks and he feels the class is as close as ever.
“I feel as a class, we have good relationships and we are all looking forward to arriving at school together,” Wimbush said. “I have actually worked with CJ Sanders a little bit. We were at the Elite 11 last year, but I didn’t even know I was going to come to Notre Dame at that time. It was a coincidence.
“I am expecting to hear 80,000 people cheering for Notre Dame. I know it will be under the lights on a Saturday night and I can’t wait to feel my adrenaline again.”

Matt Forte ran a 22.1 200m and 10.68 100m in high school for comparison. Forte ran a 4.44 40 at the NFL combine. Wimbush is a freak is that time is true.

I think it will be a very interesting battle to follow for backup QB. Kizer seemed really far behind the other two, which isn't surprising considering he (was) third on the depth chart, his gf had some health issues, etc.

Wimbush will most likely redshirt, but he won't be far behind Kizer when he steps on campus imo. If he picks up the playbook quickly, this could be fun to keep an eye on. Either of those guys will be a play away from seeing significant time. The staff won't be able to take it lightly.

if Wimbush does indeed RS i'd love to see him involved with the ND offense rather than running the scout team.

So the plan was to redshirt correct? Is there anyone else on the roster that can actually backup Kizer?

If Wimbush is as advertised, he has to get some reps in case. Disaster happens quickly in college football.

The almost worst part about today (slightly behind Malik being out) was that we are almost certainly going to burn Brandon's redshirt.

While this is terrible, I'm not totally opposed to burning Brandon's redshirt. Hell, if Kizer struggles, let's see what we got here. I think this kid could be special!

All options have to be on the table now. The rest of our schedule is gunning hard now.

I May Be wrong Here but can't we theoretically "redshirt" him next year when Malik is back and we have Deshone as backup. I think he needs reps vs u mass if they become available.

Yes. I would still give Kizer a majority of the reps, but Wimbush is definitely in play at this point and your only hope for a redshirt is if Zaire and Kizer are both healthy next year.

Yup, he can just redshirt next year.

Yeah, I'm interested to see how this goes. BK wanted to RS Wimbush so was Kizer clearly the #2 based on spring/fall play? Or was he by default #2 to protect Wimbush's RS?

I think Wimbush is going to have to play, so knowing that, does BK now have a competition since he can't protect Wimbush? Maybe I'm over thinking it, but IDK that Kizer is clearly ahead of Wimbush, is he?

I think the situation is Wimbush plays only if there's an injury (knock on ****ing wood)

They are not going to burn his redshirt for mop-up duty.

No, they won't. But you've got to have him ready to go at this point. All it takes is Kizer's helmet getting knocked off.
