I want to neg you so bad right now.

I want to neg the school's valiant people self-righteously considering giving up wins.

I'm just beginning to prepare myself for the fall...

What in the fuck is "the shag" from your other post, there Turbo...?

I'd wager a neg rep war with me may not fare well for you. ;)

The Shag, Shaggy Bevo. It's a Texas football site, but much like IE they discuss other topics, and they have people that do MS Paint there. It's a little...cruder than IE, but they're funny. The Shag is somewhat famous among the football forums I frequent. I'm on IE the most for obvious reasons, but I scout around to some others to see what people say.

I've got 400,000 rep. It's not the most, but I do alright :laugh: You probably have more.

You guys realize this will all go to the wayside once ND vacates wins, right?

When I opened this thread almost 9 years ago ND wasn't on the top of the heap. Then things got worse before they got better.

Adversity isn't new to Notre Dame, whether it be imposed by others or self imposed. ND will still pursue excellence in the classroom and on the field.

What though the odds!

Sucks that we're still 32 wins short of overtaking Michigan in the most wins column, but then again I think at least 32 of their wins came against a bunch of high schools in the 1800s.

So did ours... Just saying.

Biggest thing that has hurt us in overall wins is refusal to play bowl games for so long... and we didn't even go to a 12 game regular season schedule until 2006.

Every week in college football they do an MS Shamepaint for certain losers. The guy that does the Shamepaint (Thujone) is also the one that runs the Prevail and Ride site, you can see them there too.
Warning, lots of MS Paint dongs in his work
Prevail and Ride

Still, Thujone's work with MS Paint and weekly Shamepaints have inspired others to try their hand:
LAMEpaint week 5

This thread is legendary, and how many people first end up finding the Shag, also NSFW for obvious reasons:
Worst Sexual Encounter Thread-(in MS Paint)

Some threads become legendary over time, somewhat like our Rumored Violations thread, only funnier. Those that do usually get an MS Paint recap by Thujone like this one:
Ask a black man.... Now With MS Paint pg. 13

So, in summary, they don't really have an MS Paint section, although many legendary threads that get the MS Paint treatment will often wind up in their Classics board.

How long before that had teams been allowed to play 12 regular season games?

The NCAA (Division I) expanded to a 12 game schedule in 2006.

In the 1800s and early 1900s the number of games were sparse as was the level of competition was sparse and college teams were primarily club football with student managers. Many of the early games weren't much more than pickup games.

Rockne's teams as few as 6 and as many as 11 games in a season. ND only Bowl, up until Ara's Era, was the 1924 Rose Bowl.

Anderson and Layden coached 9 game seasons

Leahy coached 9, 10, and 11 game seasons

Brennan and Kuharich coached 10

The 1963 season under Interim Coach Devore was shortened to 9 games when the November 23rd game was cancelled due to JFK's death.

Parshegian coached 10 & 11 games seasons and got up to 12 games including bowl games.

Faust had 11 game seasons with 1 bowl

Holtz was mostly 11 games seasons plus a bowl. He had an extra regular season game in '91 when ND traveled to Hawaii to play the Rainbows. The NCAA allowed an additional game as incentive to get schools to play Hawaii as schools balked at the travel expense, jet lag, small revenue.

Davie got an added game, #12, in '97 for a Hawaii game.

With BGIFs usual fine work, we notice a few things:

A). For these analyses the winning percentages are calculated by considering ties as both a win and a loss, rather than just voiding them out. You can make an argument either way, but this is probably a reasonable way of looking at it. Note however, that if this were done the other way, ND would be farther ahead;

B). We are 0.00307 ahead of UofM on this basis. At this stage of their history, UofM earns 0.00078 for each win, and debits 0.00210 for each loss. So, if ND stopped playing, UofM would need to win four straight games to catch us [almost exactly];

C). But of course that won't be the reality, as we will still play. ND earns 0.00081 for each win but loses 0.00221 for each loss. This means that one ND loss plus a UofM win essentially closes the gap. We'd still lead by an eyelash;

D). To speculate: if Notre Dame went say 11-2 for the year, and UofM went 7-6, we'd gain four games worth of percentage points --- you can figure the now-irrelevant decimal points --- but the bottom line would be that UofM would be 5 games worth of percentage-earning games behind us, instead of the [essentially] one game that they are. Had the defense not had it's ridiculous injury disaster last season, we'd have a real cushion. So now's the time to step away from these guys.

I'll be delighted to find that my back-of-the-envelope numbers are wrong and that we are farther ahead.

Gonna be harder to hold onto the lead if Harbaugh has Michigan playing at a high level. It's not like it's hard to win in the B1G, there's not much in the way of competition past tOSU and MSU in their division...and I could see Michigan State eventually falling behind if Michigan is playing well again.

All we have to do is win.

At the end of the 1949 season ND's All TIme Winning Percentage was .814.

For 12 game seasons today that an average 9.77 wins per season.

Here's the winning percentages in the modern football Era (4 downs instead of three for a first down, six points instead of five for a touchdown, one hundred yard fields instead of 110) which started with the 1912 season.
