If Nix has had three knee surgeries, it's not difficult to imagine that he just can't cut it, physically, anymore, regardless of effort and experience.

Yeah. He may have left his best stuff on the field for us.

He's a talent in a position where there aren't a lot of guys. He'll be fine.

Cleveland should sign him... he'd instantly be the best Quarterback on the roster.

It's a shame. Poor work ethic usually goes with bad attitude, but he obviously has a fantastic attitude. I know there were weight concerns. He was still hovering up around 350 when his playing weight should have been closer to 330.

Tangentially: How funny is it that Vince Wilfork is listed at 325?

‘Hard Knocks: Houston Texans’: The Sadness of Cut Day, the Joy of Vince Wilfork in Overalls and Cowboy Boots «

LOL. I remember when the Vikings listed Pat Williams at 317

he should have neva been a 3/4 dt in nfl to begin with. he was just fat not really big and powerful for the position, was always blown up 1v1 constantly. Always only played good when he wanted to or got mad. he should have been told to slim down for combine and agent work the 4/3 teams. hes got shiftiness for a 300lber when he wants to show it, 340ish meh its not for him.

Wat? I agree that he probably would have made a better 4-3 DT than 3-4 in the NFL, and he did have some bad weight through his college career. Aside from that, he consistently ate up double teams in 2012 and in 2013 when he was healthy, and that is the whole role of a 3-4 NT. He did actually slim down quite a bit after the 2013 season once his knee was better. When he was healthy, Lou was a force in the middle of our defense. A big reason we were so successful in 2012 was due to Lou and Manti controlling the middle of the field, those are the two most important positions in the 3-4.

Yeesh, I guess I didn't really realize how big his ethic/attitude issues were.

Well, now you'll likely get to see him on Hard Knocks next week. I bet they give this one some extra attention since he was a fairly high profile draft pick.

Bummed for Lou. Boy could we use him on this year's team (one can dream)!

I am not surprised. At all. Like the guy. Have trouble with the personality in the context of football. We saw it at ND. That is why he dipped after Manti was gone. The stories are legend from `10 and `13.

If Lou wants it, he'll get it. Would not be shocked to see him cross over to commentary. Great personality, and if that is where his heart is...he'll do that.

The kid has a ton of potential, he just needs to decide where he wants to be.

Was he that bad behind the scenes? I never really heard anything. I know he made liberal use of his social media, but he generally seemed like a nice guy on camera and in interviews.

Sounds like it was a work ethic issue. Beat out by an undersized rookie from Rice.

The Louis Nix III saga with the Texans ends

Louis Nix started all of the Texans' preseason games, but it wasn't enough to earn a roster spot. Bob Levey/AP

HOUSTON -- When a coach talks about the player the way Texans coach Bill O'Brien has talked about Louis Nix III, that player is on notice.

Apparently, the Texans did not like how Nix responded to that challenge. Nix was released Friday a source confirmed, just two years after the Texans traded up to draft him in the third round.

Today's move was another blow to the Texans' third-round drafting history. They drafted seven players since 2012 in the third round, a round that can produce starters. Only three of those seven still remain with the team -- starting right guard Brandon Brooks (2012), tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz (2014) and receiver Jaelen Strong (2015). The players drafted in the third round who are no longer with the team are DeVier Posey (2012), Brennan Williams and Sam Montgomery (2013) and Nix (2014).

Nix started all of the Texans' preseason games, including their fourth preseason game in which most of the starters rested. He was starting in place of Vince Wilfork, whom the Texans rested in their exhibition games. The Texans gave him every chance to keep his job, but liked what they got out of rookie Christian Covington more.

As recently as last week, defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel was moderately complimentary of Nix.

"I think Louis has improved," Crennel said. "He’s working. We didn’t get a chance to see him work a whole lot last year, but he’s working hard. He’s shown improvement on the field. We still have a ways to go, but he’s working at it and improving."

O'Brien, too, had praised Nix's improvement this offseason in his work ethic and focus. That was a shift from before the Texans' offseason program began. In March, O'Brien had some cutting words about Nix.

"I have not seen Louis Nix," O'Brien said at the league meetings. "I don't know. He’s working out somewhere in Florida I guess. Haven’t seen him. But that’s their prerogative, so don’t read anything into that. When they show back up here for the offseason program, especially the younger players, the younger players need to be ready to roll. So hopefully he’s ready to go."

Some other confirmed cuts include running back Kenny Hilliard, outside linebacker Kourtnei Brown, safety Corey Moore, receiver Damaris Johnson and outside linebacker Max Bullough. Moore and Hilliard are two I expect to return to the practice squad.

Kelly always brought up worth ethic with Lou, especially his freshman year. They had to really ride him to get maximum effort. In the NFL coaches won't ride a player to give effort. The coaches expect effort.

Yep, as Lou says. "Motivation is simple, you eliminate those that aren't motivated."

His RS Frosh year, they talked about having him on a snap count and then that was dropped after he played well. From just about every report, he wasn't much of a practice player, but obviously would bring it on game days. Can't really do that in the NFL. Between that, his laid-back demeanor, and the fact he can't stay off social media, it shouldn't be too shocking he's cut already I guess. Hopefully, he turns it around wherever he heads to next.

Strange, I had just spoken to his gf as recently as last week and from the sound of it, it seemed like he was doing well and was slated to be the next man in after Wilfork. What I got was that his health was not an issue at all. Hopefully it'll all work out for him and he uses this as the motivation he needs to get it going.

She's probably just relaying what he tells her. Hope they best for Big Lou, but if he's had a motivation issue for a number of years, I doubt he's going to change now.

Hate to say I saw this coming, but I can say I wouldn't have drafted him for sure.

He's always been a little to silly, and very inconsistent with motivation.

Louis would make a great TV personality, but a less than great player.

I feel like this is the case for most ND players. Call them soft, entitled, whatever, but IMO it's because it takes more than athletic ability to get into ND in the first place, and a lot of the players aren't the "NFL or sell insurance in my hometown as a token to get clients" type of player the SEC recruits.

It's harder to be motivated to do something that destroys your body for money when you could do something much easier for more than enough money instead. If Lou was 100% committed to playing in the NFL and had no other goals, he would have stayed with a Florida school IMO.

* I have no idea what his motivation in life is, and he is still plenty young enough to forge out a career in the NFL if that is what he truly wants.

I also always wondered how much the work load at ND limits the amount of time most players can focus on football.
