Dayum. I wonder if that is for all cancers or any in particular. Most promising treatments are cancer specific.

Hopefully this is the real deal!

hope they don't turn up missing like all the other scientist that start talking about a cure

For real

and

for real.

I brought this very question up to a group of guys not too long ago. I can't imagine with the money the system makes off illness that it would go over well with some. I'd love to finally see this cure. To be honest, I'm not so sure it hasn't been found already. I'm just sceptical because I think "they" don't want a cure.

I don't believe the bs that there is a mass conspiracy to not cure or prolong cancer. There are way too many dedicated researchers and clinicians working on this problem that have personal stakes in curing this awful set of diseases.

A lot of people praying everyday for this story. Let's all hope this knowledge can be incorporated into treatments starting tomorrow! A personal thank you to all who work in this field, and also with those who deal directly with those patients dealing with such dire realities. If anyone is looking for a charity that absolutely "walks the walk", please consider St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. A small haven of some of the best qualities humanity has to offer IMO.

It's pretty silly to claim there is some sort of "conspiracy." The first group of scientists to patent a cure for cancer will likely end up as the richest people in the world.

This is excellent news. I've posted this before, but I lost my mom, aunt and grandfather to cancer. Then my daughter and I got it. The advances in medicine and treatments have allowed my daughter and I to go about our lives and enjoy our families. We've had testing done on two of our granddaughters (our daughters girls) and they have the gene. There's a good chance some of our other kids will end up with cancer. I'm hoping this is breakthrough is real and can be brought to market soon enough that I don't have to worry about them.

It's naive to believe that everybody is in it for the right reasons.

I work in healthcare and am a cancer survivor myself, so I kind of look at this stuff from two points of view. I wholeheartedly agree and believe that there are brilliant, good people working on this type of stuff all the time. Just like I know the team of experts I worked w/ were looking out for me. I just also know "big" corporate type interests can play in to this type stuff. The pharmaceutical industry or "big pharma" is about money, and there is a lot more money in treatments than there is in cures.

I'm not saying it's a "conspiracy", or doubting the intentions of any individual scientist/researcher/doc, I just take into account how much money and the current system play in here. The other thing, is the "cure" for cancer will never exist. There is to much variance in the types, causes etc. In my opinion the real "cures" will come from prevention, not treatment. Again, not saying we shouldn't work on both.

Anyway, just my opinion. Fuck cancer, I hope we all live in a world w/out it (or at least A LOT less) at some point, no matter how that happens.

I don't know if it's silly, I mean... the massive amount of people making money off of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, research, etc might wonder how they are going to make their next Mercedes payment. lol

The National Cancer Institute states that the medical costs of cancer care are $125 billion, with a projected 39 percent increase to $173 billion by 2020. That's just the cost of care. Think of prevention, medical research, device sales and sheer amount of people and businesses that are supported by it. It's a huge business that makes a lot of people very, very rich.

Agree with wooly. I would hope there is another Jonas Saulk out there with regards to cancer but it is more likely to be a large group of people trying to maintain that revenue stream.

I was actually just diagnosed with skin cancer. I'm not too concerned about it, just something to cut out but would love to see it for everyone else and for future he returns

You certainly have a point at the industry level. However, money and notoriety motivate both individuals and corporations. Whatever individual or entity that cures cancer will become incredibly rich and powerful (more so than maintaining the status quo).

There's 0% chance that a known cure for cancer could be kept a secret. It's the ultimate elephant in the room in health care, which is the ultimate elephant in the room in the US economy.

I am astounded with the number of stupid assholes who have posted in this thread. If someone had told me about these statements I wouldn't have believe them but I read them myself.

A neat anecdote I'd like to share.

I was in the Knowlton School of Architecture at OSU and took a class on campus planning junior year. We were fortunate enough to have the head architect for Ohio State's then-under-construction cancer hospital (a billion-dollar behemoth on south campus) come in to talk about the planning for its construction.

He spoke about how the previous hospital was built in the 1950s and how its design was incompatible with its future use, ie the small rooms couldn't fit the computers/technology necessary to support a patient so they'd get pretty cramped. So they're trying to plan this hospital's layout for what the hospital will be used for in sixty or so years. The doctors in charge of those decisions were pretty adamant that the building will be in use longer than cancer will be an issue, so they're building it to be suitable for what they believe will be the largest killer of this century, obesity. So all of the doors are like 40'' wide or something.

Anywho I thought I'd share that OSU's best doctors are so confident that we'll beat cancer soon that they're building their hospital for fat folks...

What was posted that was stupid? Seemed like a pretty reasonable conversation.

Go check out the politics thread if you want to see stupid. lol
