Talk about thunder and lightning in that backfield.

It's just awkward to listen to some HS kids talk. Not a knock by any means! They just aren't used to that type o attention. Seems like a good kid.

.

“Was perhaps the best receiving back at today’s camp,” 247Sports’s E.J. Holland wrote. “Jones did especially well on deep routes, where he caught the ball at its highest point. He should be a good pass catcher out of the backfield for Notre Dame.”

I am not sure whether I agree with you or not!

If you look at the 2014 SPARQ Ratings, the top 100 times for the year out of over 10,000 athlete ratings, the scores were 110 and above (roughly.) Parker Boudreaux would have made last years top 100 with is 112 score. He excelled at power and agility and registered over a 30 inch vertical!

Tony and Parker tied at 4.41 for Agility, and Chase beat them by a hair, that is why all three show a 99th percentile for agility. In my mind this is really important when it comes to the '16 class.

Numbers are kinda disappointing but expected based on his film. He catches the ball well out of the backfield and runs with power so he should be productive for us. God knows we need a power back. Hopefully it's just all Folston in short yardage this year.

Im hoping he is similar to Darius Walker, not fast but efficient with his movement. Good in short yardage, great hands, moved the chains.

The Opening Day One Observations - One Foot Down

- Jones Jr. weighed in at 210 pounds, but it was a different 210 then some other kids. You can tell he still has quite a bit of physical development to do and yes, I do see him getting to the 225-230 range eventually. That's fine with me. He has a power game and yesterday he flashed great footwork that should compliment his power nicely. WIth no pads, it wasn't Jones Jr.'s day to shine. Hopefully I get to see him catch some passes in the 7 on 7 portion of the event today and showcase his skills in that area.

I don't see how those are disappointing numbers. We knew he wasn't that fast, so a 4.68 was an expected time (somewhere around 4.6-4.7). His rave reviews as a receiving back and his batshit insane power numbers are what have me excited.

Notre Dame needs line-ripper-type backs more than any other type. If he can receive, then he's a big time winner [if, no joking, he can figure out who to block as well.] The take-it-to-the-house guys are wonderful, but if I have to choose, I'll take a 5-15 yard line ripper every time over a hit a home run twice a year guy.

Let me know how he tests on the cone drill and shuttle and then we can start to freak out or shower him with praise.

Poor man's Le'Veon Bell.

I hate these "poor man's" comparisons...as if you can predict exactly who ends up having the better career. I think Tony is going to be damn good, and he won't be as slow as some of you think a 4.6+ would indicate.

It's funny how we can remember things differently...I kind of remember Darius going down rather easily.

He s but 4.48 is a heck of a lot faster that 4.68. They are different types of backs though. Speed not as important to Tony's game.

I'd personally be pretty shocked if Folston ran under a 4.60. He doesn't need top end speed for his game, but there is no way Folston runs what Cierre did, and he ran a 4.56 at the Combine.

I agree he isn't a snow plow but I wouldn't want to stand in his way.

Yep, on this we agree. Far more applicable to short yardage burst and change of direction at RB (and most skill positions).

Yup.

It is very rare that a run is on a straight line. And bad start can be the difference from a 4.4 and a 4.6 easily. I think 40 times are telling to a degree, but moreso for fans to gawk at crazy fast numbers. De'Anthony Thomas didn't test well in the 40 but that guy can flat out start and stop and change direction with a very fluid motion and practically no loss of speed.

I don't think Folston runs a 4.6+, somewhere in the mid to high 4.5s sounds about right. Cierre wasn't that fast, he just had killer vision and hip fluency. As does Folston, but Folston also possesses elements of power and can block at an adequate level. He's kind of a jack of all trades, master of none kind of back.

Tony isn't fast, but is so insanely powerful that it doesn't matter. He's not going to hit the corner and be off to the races like Prosise would, but he can bust it right up the middle and do considerable damage to the opposing back 7. He's still only 210, and he'll get bigger and stronger, and considering he has this much power already, it's a scary thought of what he'll be like when he hits 225-230.

It is funny ...

I seem to remember Darius breaking the ND Freshman Rushing Record that had stood for 30 years.

I remember Darius rushing for 1,000 yds in CONSECUTIVE Seasons becoming only the 4th ND back to do so.

I seem to recall Darius being ranked 4th on the ND All-Time Rushing List despite only playing 3 seasons.

Seemed he caught a lot of passes as well, having a career combined Total Offense Per Game of OVER 100 Yds.

I believe he also became quite effective at picking up the blitz.

Funny what chooses to stand out to some.

Folston is not fast, he has nice acceleration but then always, suddenly starts to look behind him because he has not confidence in his closing speed. It was funny how he was caught from behind against BYU. He is quicker than faster, like Riddick. But i think Folston would be a bit faster if he cuts some weight (i think he carries extra weight). Tony Jones is not faster and never will be, but it is not his game, he will be fine, i think he is great running back.

He ran a 4.4 coming out of high school and ESPN had him listed as an athlete. Not fast. Yeah right.
