"[The coaches] explained their process and how they recruit, [they told] me why I didn't get offered until like a week ago, which I understood and don't have a problem with," Farrell said. "They just don't offer many guys and were looking at another tight end initially."
"Talking with [head coach] Brian Kelly, [he said that] they like how I can block as well as I can catch, and they don't have many tight ends that can do both right now," Farrell said

ne thing that stood out was his time with the current Notre Dame tight ends.

"Probably getting to eat lunch with a couple current tight ends, I got to see what kind of guys are there," Farrell said when asked what he liked about the trip.
"I don't really have an order right now, but I liked what I saw," Farrell said. - See more at: https://notredame.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1774264#sthash.E11AODjp.dpuf

wouldn't have a problem taking another highly rated TE that can help us keep healthy depth at the position.

Would think us and Sparty is where he'll end up due to the fact Urban has already got two highly ranked TE's committed

Scout: Farrell gets one more look

Four-star tight end Luke Farrell plans to announce his college decision before his senior season. He returned to Notre Dame on Thursday for a last look at the Irish. Can Notre Dame make a late push for the Ohio product?

When Notre Dame offered four-star tight end Luke Farrell last week the Irish immediately moved into the 6-foot-6, 220-pounder’s top five.

Farrell plans to announce his college decision before his senior season at Perry High School in Ohio. With that in mind he returned to South Bend on Thursday to take one last look at the Irish before making his college choice.

“Overall it was a good visit,” he said. “I was pretty impressed with everything and glad I got to see everything.”

Last summer he attended the Irish Invasion and returned in the fall for a game. This visit gave him the opportunity to spend more one-on-one time with the coaching staff and to learn more about the academic side of the school.

“I’ve seen a lot of the football end of it so I got to see some academic stuff and met with people there and I got to talk to coach (Brian) Kelly a little bit,” Farrell said. “That was good. I talked to the tight ends coach too. I talked to him before when he came to the school a couple weeks ago and I got to talk to him again.”

The Irish coaching staff made sure Farrell knew their philosophy on recruiting.

“They talked about how they’re recruiting system works and how it may seem that I didn’t get an offer until a couple weeks ago but that’s just really the path they take with their recruiting, which I understand,” Farrell said. “They were telling me how I’d have to compete for a spot because there are some great tight ends that come to Notre Dame but there is a spot for me if I’m willing to take it.”

During the trip, Farrell spent time with Irish tight ends Durham Smythe and Nic Weishar.

“I talked to two of the tight ends and I saw them work out and stuff,” he said. “They were just saying how it was a good atmosphere to be in with the type of guys that are there. There are a lot of high class guys who value education there. They really liked it.”

Notre Dame remains in Farrell’s top five with Boston College, Michigan State, Ohio State and Penn State.

“It’s definitely up there with my top five that I have right now,” he said. “It’s not really in any order. Next week I’m going to start figuring out what fits me best.”

Farrell has already visited the other four schools on his short list and now will spend the next several weeks narrowing his options to just one.

Two-a-days begin on Aug. 1. Farrell hopes to have the decision made by then.

“Nothing set up right now,” he said. “I saw all the places I mentioned and saw everything I needed to. I want to decide before the season starts so maybe in early August; right around then.”

Scout.com ranks Farrell as the 154th best prospect in the nation and the No. 7 tight end.

What's interesting is every school in his top 5 already has a TE committed except ND. Ohio State is probably the only one that gives him pause/impacts his recruitment, but I found that interesting.

We have bookend 5 star talent at TE in 15 and 17. This guy would have rarely seen the field anyway. meh.

Wonder why he waited so long? Like there was any real question?

But hey... someone's gotta take the lower rated TE's on down years, right?

I almost hate to say it, but I significantly agree. Few times have I felt as good at missing a couple of fairly highly rated recruits but the two '16 tight ends, all things being equal, feel to me like a bit of a wasted scholarship on a tight year with other pressing needs. Not that their is anything wrong with tight ends in '16, but doesn't it seem like other than at the interior of the offensive line, our needs are best met between the existing roster, '15 entering freshmen, and '17 commits?

Continue his academic career at Ohio State? I wonder if he'll be deciding between the "Underwater Fire Prevention" curriculum or majoring in "Paper Airplane Design."

Question.. Do all ND fans think ND is the only place where someone can get a quality education?

Nope, I realize ND isn't for everybody, but I also went to Ohio State for grad school and I know what kind of education most athletes are looking for there. Also, if my son or daughter had free rides to superior academic institutions and they were going to turn those down to go to a place like Ohio State, we would have a long, serious chat.

And if that included the context that his ND offer likely wasn't commitable after they landed the #1 TE of 2017?

You also don't know what he wants to do with his career. What if he wants to be in education? He doesn't need to go to Vanderbilt or Duke (two of his other offers that're academically prestigious) to get that done.

He can go to a school he likely grew up loving, almost certainly win a lot of football games and hardware, and accomplish everything he wants to accomplish academically with his Ohio State choice.

Also someone else stated, Notre Dame has two five-star TEs bookending this class, why are we even talking about his kid's committment elsewhere?

I understand that his ND offer was likely rescinded given the two other TEs book-ending the class, so the argument is irrelevant.

So you would be receptive if your child had free rides from academically prestigious schools (e.g. Duke, ND, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Princeton, Dartmouth, University of Chicago, etc...) and they preferred to turn those down to attend a school like Florida State for example? If so, then with all due respect you and I were brought up very differently.
