Hope we don't take both him and Love this early. Think we could get both pretty late in the cycle if we wanted to and try to get better prospects early.

i haven't watched the highlight film AT ALL so i don't know...just remember though this is VERY early so unless they have been doing the camps or complete freak, they arn't going to be highly ranked or also on a big time team

I really like Julian Love as a prospect and I think he could be, at the very least, a decent defensive back in the nickel package.

I have no problem at all taking Love and Campbell to start the 2016 group of defensive backs. They both offer something different

Or they can work out in front of the coaching staff and be deemed worthy of an offer now.

Yeah they can, but then they would be limiting themselves to recruiting 1 CB the rest of the cycle when we don't really even know who's interested yet.

If we were healthy our top 3 corners for this past year would have been:

Keivarae Russell: top247 composite #122 Offers from USC, UW, Oregon, Stanford
Cody Riggs: top247 composite #111 Former UF transfer, Offers from FSU, Georgia, etc
Cole Luke: top247 composite #147 Offers from OU, Texas, Michigan, USC, etc

Not elite. Yup. shit even Devin Butler while not elite was a composite 4 star. And we know how highly regarded Watkins was.

Extremely valid point.

But if you argue that you can also argue this.

Trae Waynes, #1 CB in the 2015 NFL Draft, 2-star Rivals.
Jalen Collins, #2 CB in the 2015 NFL Draft, 3-star on ESPN/Scout, 4-star Rivals.
Kevin Johnson, #3 CB in the 2015 NFL Draft, 2-star on Rivals.

Collins was rated the #22 CB on Rivals and was a 4-star. Campbell is rated the 28th best and Love is rated the 30th best CB on Rivals.

I dont find much stock in the rankings, but you made your arguement on them, so I personally do not see a huge drop off from 22 to 28 to 30. I don't find stock in that ratings, bc each class is different. So taking your points into account for debates sake....say that Collins class was a weak CB class and the 2016 is a deep CB class. Who is to say that Love or Campbell wouldnt be "ranked" higher in a weak class of CB's? There just isnt much substance in that.

If in February 2016 Campbell and Love were ranked as 4-stars you would feel better, yet now youre mad that ND is jumping the gun on "3-star" players. I would trust the staff, the people that evaluate talent and the people they hire to evaluate talent.

I'd take both Campbell and Love.

From all reports, the staff wants to target 5 DBs. 3CB/2S or 2CB/3S.

I'd rather has us take these kids now than slow play them or whatever and be caught with our pants around our ankles come February because all of the other big fish were caught by different teams. They're solid players on tape. Campbell also looks like he can be a FS. Versatility is a bonus.

I'm in.

It's not all rankings. I just didn't like Campbell's tape really. Ironman agreed. Pair that with a currently mediocre offer list and I think we can wait on him. I like Love though and think he could become a player just don't think Campbell is that good. Obviously the staff liked him enough to offer him now. I just think we could push for him later in the cycle if we miss on better prospects and get him or someone as good as him. To each his own I guess.

As for the recruiting rankings, its a fact that higher regarded players pan out at a higher percentage than lower ones so from that perspective I want the prospects with the highest probability of panning out.

It's February dude.

We haven't even cleared the month that held NSD and people already talking about 'slow playing' and worried about 'better' players.

At what point do people let it go and just trust the staff is going after what they deem to be the best? Its not like they are hunting down Bruce Heggie after Bruce Heggie. (No offense Bruce.)

Kei wasn't brought in as a CB. That ranking was for him at tailback. So there's that....

He's coming back? I really like Roderick, I think he'd be a great addition.

From his BGI interview there is "definitely" a chance that he commits this weekend. His parents have already signed off on it he chooses to do so. It will be about his in person meetings with the staff, mostly Lyght.

He would be a valuable addition this early in the process. With two DBs in the fold, Lyght et al can tighten down their search to the rest of the top rated field. And maybe it's just me but Roderick appears to have huge upside. He looks very smooth.

I'm not a huge fan of his film, but that's mainly because the QB play is so atrocious, that you can't even gauge his ability to play the ball since it generally ends up in no-mans land 50% of the time. I like his frame and he looks pretty athletic. I prefer Love though, and I can definitely expect him to shoot up the rankings. If Love isn't a 4-star across the board or at least on 2 of the 3 main sites, I'd be incredibly surprised.

I know there are a lot of :s: gazers around here but I prefer good quality guys that WANT to be at ND. They pan out and don't bail leaving us with depth issues.

I'll take this "3:s: everyday.

I don't think it's the stars that are the issue, but moreso his film didn't really impress people, nor does his offer list. Most guys on here will take film and offer list over stars anyday of the week.

Thats what they're saying. Basically, Love and Campbell had one spot and Love took it.

Got shit on on the first page of this thread for suggesting this haha. Glad we did, Love is a real nice player and we have good shots at a couple elite CBs.

It sounds like I'm in the minority here but would rather have him versus Love.

So of the two guys we basically all agreed were fairly interchangeable, you'd prefer the one who just won MVP at the Rivals Camp in STL. Why is that? :)

Just kidding. Sounds like they are both good players. If we are taking up to 6 DBs. Why not get these two and Lyke, and then go after some bigger fish?

On who and why we're taking them, I don't make the rules. Second, I like his man to man cover skills better. I think he fundamentally plays the position better. Better base, balance, feet, length, and break than Love does. You watch the film and I see a better man corner where Love might be a better Nickel and that's it. Again, I know there is a lot that disagrees with this but there is nothing on the film that tells me different. In fact very little film of Love playing man relative to Roderick's.
