Mike Elston DL Coach

It sounds like we know the 3 coaches we are bringing in to replace the 3 we lost.

Done deal:
Lyght replaces Cooks

Gaining traction:
Denson replaces Alford
Quinn replaces Lafleur

My question is, if these are the only changes, who takes over as recruiting coordinator?

None of these guys have enough experience to take on that role. The only guy on our staff currently that I believe could step in would be Denbrock, but his plate is quite full.

Mayne Peloquin? Idk if that's even possible but idk how his role is any different than RC.

Meghan Whitt is the coordinator of recruiting operations, so i suppose she is essentially the recruiting coordinator.

I guess I don't really know how important of a position it truly is. The coaches have the regions they cover and I believe Kelly dictates who is offered and when they are offered.

Maybe someone could provide some insight on what exactly a recruiting coordinator does?

megan is in charge of coordinating events (irish invasion), sending out material, im sure both her and dan do some arranging of flights/schedules etc for official visits

Just when it looks like the staff may be assembled and more or less set, now Wiltfong is saying we're getting the QB/OC from Boise State, Elliot may or may not be leaving, and who knows with Elston?

I'm so confused...lets just take 20 coaches and screw with the NCAA.

Mike Sanford Bio - Boise State University Official Athletic Site

Mike Sanford, a Boise State graduate and a quarterback for the Broncos from 2000-04, is entering his first season as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at his alma mater.

He returned to Boise State after spending the previous three seasons at Stanford (2011-13). He began his career as the Cardinal running backs coach in both 2011 and 2012, and then coached quarterbacks and wide receivers in 2013.

He was Stanford's recruiting coordinator in each of his final two seasons.

Following his playing career with the Broncos, Sanford served as a graduate assistant with UNLV from 2005-06, where he worked with his father, Mike, then the head coach of the Rebels. He moved on to Stanford, where he was an offensive assistant from 2007-08.

His first full-time coaching stint came at Yale in 2009, where he coached tight ends and fullbacks and served as the team's recruiting coordinator.

The following season (2010) he coached quarterbacks and was the passing game coordinator at Western Kentucky.

Sanford earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Boise State in 2005.

Mike Sanford, Jr. from Boise State? That would be a tremendous hire.

What is he saying about Elston?

Also, I want to smack those of you that want Hoke on staff. I don't know if it's purely for the comedic value, or if you think he brings something else to the table from a recruiting standpoint, but I think it's a bad idea. I think he has too much ego, stupid shit flies out of his mouth too often, he has an incredible lack of focus and no attention to detail as we've seen with the Shane Morris concussion (Not to mention concern for the health of the student-athletes). There's also the fact he refused to wear a headset on game days, which doesn't exactly lend itself to good communication with your staff. There are better candidates out there, getting Hoke would only be beneficial in a "Ha ha, you lost" capacity.

We wouldn't hire him to be head coach. Just like Weis, he's shown he can handle it if we take some things off his plate. Metaphorically. Probably not literally.

With Elston? D line development? Nope, recruiting? Awful

I will gladly pack his shit up and throw it in the Uhaul and then gladly drive him to Norman.

Bring back Bryant Young

Would love Bryant Young to come in for DL, much better option for ND than Hoke would be. He gets ND, he had a great career in the NFL that will appeal to the kdis, and he has some experience.

Elton is the one that grabbed D Cage on a truncated time frame and was instrumental in flipping Josh B

I knew he had a way with words, might be a great recruiter, but I don't think he has the toughness that we need in a DL coach

This shall shake up interesting. With Sanford "on board" where does Denbrock go?

I love the B. Young to DL comment. I am all in for bringing ND alums and ex-players (especially NFL players) in to coach.

So BGI is speculating that for now Elston has taken over the recruiting coordinator position for ND, at least in the interim. Apparently he's been pretty active on twitter sending out invitations to 2016 prospects for our March 21st Junior Day. He's also started following a number of high profile recruits around the country. Something I didn't know, Elston was the RC at UC from 2007-2009.

He's a universally loved guy (as far as I'm aware) in the program much like how Alford was. He COULD be good in the recruiting coordinator role and he has performed it before... but the question is "will he." If recruiting is now part of his job description, maybe he will.

Yep, no excuses now.

Maybe he'll be better organizing the effort and helping to fill gaps rather than a boots-on-the-ground type? The knock has been that he doesn't develop great relationships - well in this role he won't have to do that. Other coaches build the relationship and he can jump in to help sell ND.

Makes sense to me.

I think most normal human beings would find recruiting a little weird. You get used to it, but its still weird.

If Elston is the kind of guy that doesn't want to phone date a bunch of kids, but is willing to work hard and be really organized behind the scenes, it may be a perfect spot for him.

Relationships with kids who are already committed is a lot different too.

That's what I posted in the ND Coaches thread. This might be a better fit for him.

Really don't know enough to comment, but if he has been coaching for 34 years now, he deserves to be able to scale back a bit, with an "inside" job. Also, wasn't he the one with the health issues last season?

He has on-going issues. Denbrock and McCarthy had issues last year. Elston the year before.

I agree.

On the other hand, BVG has been much less noticeable. Not sure what that means... I'm hoping it means something though.

I disagree somewhat. BVG is by no means an upper echelon recruiter for us, but he's been pretty decent on the trail. Sealed the deal for Rob Beal.

I've seen him mentioned in the site updates on who is visiting whom, but he is noticeably absent from pictures and recruit updates. I am actually in BVG's corner for another season, but it does seem like he could/should be doing more on the trail. Then again, if we land Jones and Kelly, the D's haul will be pretty damn impressive this year.
