Are you going to deny an incoming freshman a 4 year scholarship when it's already been promised to them? Or, are you going to deny a walk on scholarship player an extension of a 1 year scholarship (As mentioned I wasn't aware Kelly has supposedly already promised Joe a scholarship for his 5th year)? Again, I think Joe is awesome, and the whole thing is moot as we'll likely have attrition after Spring that will open more spots, but it's unlikely they're going to bump Martin, Farley, or Golson before Schmidt in that scenario.

Also, Joe was #4 in tackles.

This is hilarious. I'm done.

YouLookingatMe, you're just a dick. Smh.

I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm just trying to work within the confines of the 85 player limit here. If I'm making an emotional decision I take Joe, but logically I'm not sure the staff would follow that route. Looking at Brooklyn's Roster Projections (http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/not.../190805-roster-projections-4.html#post1487159) we're at 80 spots as it stands with incoming freshmen. The staff is talking about bringing in a transfer, and possibly 2 or more. If they do bring in 2, that leaves 3 spots for 5th year guys.

QB - Everett Golson
QB - Montgomery VanGorder (So) - BK said walk on scholarships are year to year
Slot WR - Amir Carlisle
C/G - Nick Martin
G/C - Matthew Hegarty
DT - Chase Hounshell
DE - Ishaq Williams
DE - Anthony Rabasa
LB - Jarrett Grace
LB - Joe Schmidt
LB - Ben Councell
CB - Jalen Brown
CB/S - Matthias Farley

That's a tough list to pull just 3 guys out of, especially when Martin is probably our best center and a former captain, Farley was at the top of list in sacks and INTs (Not to mention could add safety depth), and Golson may or may not still be Kelly's QB. I'm not singling Joe out to be a dick, I'm just wondering who/how we can come up with a spot for Joe given those circumstances. Who would you tell among the non-5th years to take a hike? Which freshman gets denied a scholarship in that scenario?

It doesn't really matter, as I said, we'll have attrition after Spring most likely, and as someone pointed out Kelly has already promised Joe a spot, which makes me happy and kills the discussion. It still begs the question though...who will be coming back for 5th years now, and who gets shut out?

Sorry, I get my panties in a wad when someone calls me a dick

I hope Joe starts against Texas, because he really is the best inside linebacker we have currently for BVG's defense.

If anything, I think this discussion has really highlighted how complicated Ishaaq's situation is given the academics Kelly mentioned yesterday, and it may be difficult to work him back into the roster given incoming freshmen, other 5th years, and possible transfers at positions of need. We've certainly got a lot of DE's today as it is.

That is part of your problem, Bud!

We somehow got into a Joe Schmidt discussion because I was breaking down how tight we are for 5th year spots since there's only 5 roster spots currently open (If no one leaves the team, which won't be the case of course) and it sounds like some of those 5 spots could be going to transfers coming in. I said "I think you have to bring Schmidt back, unless he pays his way again" and then I became a dick and that took up most of page 46

Oh I enjoyed every second of the derailment. I was just having a little fun. I figured italics were still a faux pas round these parts.

LOL I love how we're all stressing over how we're going get DOWN to 85 scholarships when we should really be focusing how to get UP to 85 scholarships. This is ND, folks.

Joe was a walk on.

Walk on IS a spot.

You didn't miss much. YouLookinAtMe and koonja just want Schmidt's scholarship revoked.

I say if his scholarship is, so should their posting priveledges.

See, this is how nasty rumors start. I personally don't want Joe's scholarship pulled, and I hope he's starting for us against Texas next year. I was just concerned how we're going to get to 85, and I was putting scenarios out there. If you're a coach, and there's three spots to fill, which of these guys doesn't get a scholarship next year: Martin, Farley, Golson, Schmidt? I was really wondering what Kelly meant about the Walk-On scholarships being just 1 year and if he was applying that to Joe, but it sounds like he's covered no matter what. Tough situation, but it's all hypothetical anyway, since we'll likely have attrition after Spring.

I think Williams becomes the next 5th year casualty unless we lose some others to transfer. BK said in a presser a month ago his situation wasn't as fluid as Russell's, and with the numbers being what they are Ishaq would probably be an odd man out. It's a shame, as he was finally stepping out and living up to some potential, securing a starting spot last year only to get suspended. The 4-3 DE position is much more suited for him than the 3-4 OLB he played in most of his career.

It's hard to say without knowing more about Ishaq's academic situation, but it would seem like an early enrollee who'd be coming back for a fifth year, would still be on track academically to graduate by his 5Y spring.
He's basically one semester behind Golson, who enrolled at the same time, missed one semester instead of two, and is apparently on track to graduate this spring (hence the grad school transfer option for him), two semesters ahead of when Ishaq's clock runs out.
I guess that is assuming he doesn't have any prior semesters' work wiped out from the academic infraction. But still, we're talking four and a half years plus summers. Also, what sort of coursework is he supposed to be taking back home? Unlikely there's much at, say, Kings County Community College, that would translate into credits at Notre Dame.
Anyway, I hope this works out for him, on and off the field. If/when Ishaq puts it all together he can go a long way.

I like Ishaq. He's a quiet guy who has had his difficulties both on and off the field. I want the best for the kid and hope he can find his way back to ND this year not only to compete on the field, but to also obtain his degree.

I like that Ishaq was/is a thinker... a football player who studies philosophy, pretty rare. The young man has much talent to work with. That said: I'm no psychic, but I get a very pessimistic vibe from the cosmos as far as Ishaq being on our team in 2015. I'd say pretty nearly every comment concerning him has a not-too-upbeat feeling associated with it.

I want what is best for the young man. That probably starts with a Notre Dame diploma. Even that seems flittering away though if he is not even in school this term. I'd like him to "turn on" his football instincts and energies and do something in 2015 which hurtles him into the NFL if he wants that. I can see that happening whether Notre Dame is any further part of that or not. I don't know what I think about Ishaq and the 2015 team. It's not impossible that this whole difficult saga needs a change of venue [with accommodating life lessons and growth] to arouse the young man to commit to become what he fully can.

I thought someone reported this but I don't see it anywhere. So FWIW, Sampson spoke to someone close to Ishaq and was told his plan to return to ND regardless of whether there is a scholarship available or not. He isn't taking classes now because it wouldn't change his graduation timeline. He has to re-apply and be accepted again. Eligibility to play isn't 100% clear yet.

Time to move on. This guy hasnt proved to be useful in any of his prior years, what makes you think he will be useful now that he has sat out a whole season? I have no clue what happened to this guy.

No way this guy should be in the discussion of a 5th year.

You're absolutely right. He's completely worthless. A waste of a roster spot.

I hope italics aren't necessary.
