Might be the worst play call I've ever seen
If anything, Carroll's explanation of the call makes it even worse. In fact, anything other than getting your tails to the line for second, third and fourth down, if necessary, and handing the ball off to Lynch from a half yard out qualifies as borderline insanity.
Not really a fan of either team, but a fun game. Yeah, on one hand, the Pats were the beneficiary of an idiot playcall, so were incredibly lucky (and luck of a completely different nature than the luck of the Kearse catch) --
but Brady, who needs to be slapped around the room, was just fantastic, --
and the kid from Nowhere, Mississippi, made a really great football play --
esp. considering no one could have been thinking pass in that situation (so obvious was it that a run was coming),--
and the defensive play is even better, when you realize that not only did Butler make a great play when he should have been off guard, but the other DB did a great job tying up the screening receiver (it would have been the play ND got called for against FSU, but it wouldn't have been called last night), which prevented the WR from screening Butler and allowing him to make the great play --
which defensive preparation goes to Belichik's coaching, and he's just a great coach, though it's true that Belichik is probably as amoral as the worst Wall Street Robber Baron --
and, finally, though I feel for Wilson, who seems like a good kid --
the real idiot being Pete Carroll should make even the harshest Patriots-hating-Irish fans a little less unhappy.
And if I'm a Pats fan, I wouldn't apologize. It's hard to win a title, and the luckiest win is far far better than the most glorious loss. They played as well as they needed to and while, sure, the bonehead call made it possible, it did take a great play to win it and they made it.
