Coach: 2016 WR Nixon Truly Special - Irish Sports Daily

Kevin Mays has been around some pretty special football players and the Viera High School (Viera, Fla.) head coach would put 2016 wide receiver Tre Nixon right up there with the best he’s seen.
“He’s as good as they get on both sides of it,” Mays said of Nixon. “I’ve coached a few guys who have gone on to play in the NFL and stuff. As far as being a pure offensive player, he’s probably the best high school player I’ve been around.”
Notre Dame definitely sees the potential, which is why the Irish extended an offer to Nixon late last month. Nixon sports a growing list of offers that includes the likes of Florida, Miami, Georgia, Ohio State, Penn State, Texas and Michigan State among others.
Mays and Nixon both agreed the offer from the Irish is one he’ll look at seriously.
“I think the tradition and the historic part of what Notre Dame represents,” Mays said of what sticks out about the Irish. “Notre Dame was definitely one of the ones he was excited about. He texted me right after it happens. I guess because of what Notre Dame is and has been just excites him.”
What sticks out about Nixon?
“He’s fast,” his coach said.
But not just the fact that he’s fast.
“The rate at which he can change directions full speed,” the coach continued. “He’s been clocked at a 4.38 running the 40. He’s 6-1, he’ll probably be 6-2, 6-3 when it’s all said and done. The biggest thing is his footwork and the rate at which he can change directions full speed, put his foot in the ground and just go.”
Mays takes full advantage of Nixon’s talents.
“We play him in the slot,” he said. “We’ll put him in motion, we run him on jet sweeps, we’ve played him at Wildcat. We’ve used him as the holder on extra points we faked this year.
“He’s not scared to take the ball up the middle if we have to and of course, his receiving ability as far as running routes and beating guys deep, that’s easy for him.”
Nixon puts in the work away from the field in order to put himself in a position to succeed.
“His work ethic, doing the little things a receiver needs to do,” his coach said. “He’s always working on his footwork. He’s a hard worker. In the classroom, he’s a 3.7-type GPA kid. He’s a leader on and off the field. He just does everything he’s supposed to do besides having the talent he has.”

I absolutely love this kid. And would be very excited if he came on board early. Per Loy Alford is on this kid very hard with both the family and kid reciprocating that attention. Should be a spring visit but if not then the summer.

This kid is an absolute burner and changes direction on a dime! This young man should be very special at the next level. Would love to have him in blue and gold.

I would bet that he will be a Junior Day visitor

He looks like a Bennett Jackson to me. Their tapes are very similar, about the same size and speed too.

When I see a bunch of posts comparing a new recruit to one of our better/best players, I always come in skeptical ready to pump the breaks but wow, the Fuller comparison is apropos.

His competition may be terrible but he can flat out move and he has the same gazelle stride and acceleration that Fuller uses to look so effortless.

I'd be ecstatic to add him to 16

You can say that, that's fair. He never turned into the play everyone thought he would come out to, and not saying Tre won't be a great player, but I remember everyone was pretty excited about BJ when he was coming out of HS too.

Looks like Fuller but a hell of a lot bigger. As you can see in his tape (also see Keith Marshall's tape from a few years back) speed like his freezes defenders like a deer in headlights.

if he's a legit 6'1" i can see him getting a bump in ratings with the tape/offer list

Huge and a very smart ploy by Alford. Tell everyone else how you admire this young man.

Interesting...he's got a little bit of Golden Tate and Fuller skill set going. This is a good one to get into early.

You know a WR is fast when the secondary is in shell coverage, bailing on the snap, and still get left in the dust on a go route without a single head fake.

Don't know if I by him having a Top 5 NFL Combine 40 time, but a must have deep thread nonetheless.
