I'm not a fan of getting physical in response to jerks. But this has always made me smile.

Not sure if Rome is really on my list of "ND haters". The guy just had Mike Brey on a couple weeks ago and it was a good interview. His interview with BK back in September was very complimentary. His interview a while back with Schmidt was something I really liked. He also has been pretty fair in reporting on our team over the years.

Is he a blowhard, what sports guy isn't? I'm not going to hate on him for anything Notre Dame related. Not that I know of, anyway.

I don't think bandies are necessarily "cool," but I'm not going to belittle them or anything. I remember in high school trying to watch the band from the locker room at halftime. We had a really good band my freshman and sophomore years, but my family moved to the Dayton area and the band at the new school was absolute crap. They played the same damn halftime show every game, never any different, so damn boring. They said that they were a "competition band," and they were trying to perfect their routine or some shit. Fortunately the locker room at that 2nd school was pretty far from the field, so I wasn't missing much. I actually spent more time with bandies and other athletes in high school, like tennis/track/swim people, didn't really hang out with other football jocks much...probably because I was in a lot of AP/Honors classes, very few football players were there.

He's not a ND hater, to my knowledge. That's not what makes him a complete jerk.

When pretty much every "sports personality" in the business is a jerk, I guess I just pick my battles. When it comes to Rome, I guess I give him a pass considering he has been one of the few that don't constantly rip on our team.

The delivery might be a little harsh and insensitive, but can't say I've ever been much of a fan of marching bands either...never got the allure and most band people I have met in my life have been kind of dorky...obviously that is not all of them, but has just been my own personal experience.

I think the point is why does he have to tweet that? He's just being a douche cause that's his persona.

Band at my school was the same...went from a good regular marching band to a competition marching band and played stuff you din't know and the same exact songs and exact steps so they could be as good as possible at the end of season competitions

I don't care if he doesn't like them. He doesn't have to. But this is another stupid and over-masculine statement. He needs to watch the Breakfast Club and realize he's not in high school.

Yeah, I suppose it's not regular for a football player to enjoy watching/listening to the band, but I was always more musically inclined when I was young. I was always impressed the band at my first school was able to come up with a new routine each week, playing new songs and going through new formations. It was so disappointing to see how unoriginal the "competition band" was at the 2nd school, felt like such a cop out they couldn't do new material. Their material during games was kind of lame too, no "Hey" song or classic rock like the other band, nothing memorable was played aside from the school fight song.

His comment does kind of scream "high school bully" when you read it.

I always thought that the band was essential to college football atmosphere (and high school football). It's part of the whole package that makes it a great experience. Jim Rome is a stupid dick.

That's my biggest issue with Rome. It's like he is always trying to make up for not being accepted by the cool kids or jocks in HS.

I know that there are a fair amount of us veterans in here. I think that anyone who spent hours and hours and hours (and hours, and hours, ad infinitum) on the parade ground, until the last person finally learned how to march properly, can probably appreciate the precision and hard work that goes into something like this:

Marching band has a huge military background. Lots of "drill sergeant" atmosphere still left.

And, yes, marching bands rehearse for hours and hours just to put together a 3 minute drill. That's why lots of high schools do the same routine for an entire season...most add to the show every week.

He's not *wrong* -- nearly every band kid I've ever met was a dork. But that doesn't mean there's anything *wrong* with that, or that it's cool or even worth my time to belittle them for doing something that's harmless and brings them joy.
