I have to say I was extremely happy that he played well. It will be interesting to see who starts the bowl game. And if EG comes back next year or leaves for the nfl or transfers. I think the writing is on the wall that MZ is going to over take him if he hasn't already.

Leaves for the NFL? Is there an NFL team that needs a ball boy? He sure in hell won't make it as a QB!

Has anybody noticed that whenever Golson comes off the field and Kelly is talking to him...that Golson ALWAYS seems to be walking away from Kelly as they speak? Maybe I should have asked this question in the Golson thread. But does speak to his leadership/followship skills.

This team doesn't respond to him... that is our problems personified.

Things Golson never says - “Everything in life is about getting the opportunity. When the opportunity came, I didn’t even look at it as a make-or-break point,” Zaire said. “I looked at it as a way to help the football team.

“The only thing moving forward is just being as prepared as I can be for the guys around me. That’s who I play for — the guys around me. We have a great squad and a great offensive unit and the O-line is great and the running backs are great and it’s my job to be a distributor and get the ball to all of our great guys.”

Leader, QB, team player. I like it.

Yes, he did ok.

He got 5 drives: 2 TD's, a missed FG from the 27 and a failed 4th down attempt from SC's 10

So he's good for 20 points.

His drives? 64, 54, 13, 75 and 72 yards.

I thought Malik played pretty good yesterday. You can still see he has some issues to work on. Had a couple weird looking throws where he lobbed the ball way too high up in the air. His running looked good, especially on the read option. He is clearly much more decisive in his actions than Golson, but you can still tell he is a redshirt freshman too that will make a mistake here or there. This will definitely be interesting going forward.

JT Barrett didn't look great against Va Tech either.

I have a question about Lafleur. I wonder how much he actually worked with both EG and MZ. I have heard little to nothing about him this year or what he is actually doing on the staff?

It's hard to be owner/operator of a gym AND a football coach at the same time :)

If ND would commit to a run-first offense with him and Folston/Bryant doing lots of zone read I think it'd be incredibly effective. Bryant had 11 YPC yesterday.

But we're never going to do that.

Agree on both points, frustrating.

I don't think Golson has played, consistently, as bad as many here think, but good lord was it nice to see Zaire run the read option ad nauseum.

Everett DOES consistently play bad --- not in any sense like every other play he stinks it up, but in the sense that every other DRIVE he stinks it up. Everett has made some GREAT plays --- plays that maybe only Winston might make. But you cannot win with "get one/ give one." You might well, if you were utilizing a great passing system with a formidable array of receivers, mass up a huge stat line, but if you are responsible for handing opponents multiple short fields and three-and-outs that they don't earn, then you're playing bad football.

Having said that, it is true that Everett occasionally plays brilliant football. But occasional brilliant football cannot beat anyone who is really good, nor many who are just sort-of good.

Love where your mind is at. We can go up tempo a lot more and I think our offense would be similar to Arizona or like Kelly had with Collaros at Cinci

After watching the first three play video,on und.com, Kelly is like hey scoring is not easy why did you do that. Our offense is supposed to be so difficult only I know what to do. That way I can be a control freak. Now go sit down and let golson explain all the details that slow us down and cripple our chances of scoring...

I have watched it a few times and cannot for the life of me figure out what BK is telling him in such an animated way. BK does look as if he is disappointed. How about a high five and "Nice drive Malik!"

He played great! Way better than Tommy Rees II (EG). His passes were on point! To bad they couldn't catch them.

Golson isn't Rees II, he sort of reminds me of Cutler. Amazing ability, periods of QBing brilliance, with liberal amounts of inexplicably boneheaded decision-making, topped off with a really shitty sideline demeanor.

I really think that could work with all the talent ND appears to have in the offensive skill positions. But, you're right, it won't happen. I thought Malik did pretty well and he was fired up. Unlike others on the team yesterday, he wanted to be there, win or lose. I'm a sucker for that.

I think my biggest frustration with Kelly isn't that he wouldn't move to a run first, zone read until our eyes bleed offense, it's that he doesn't react quickly enough to what is or isn't working or to who is or isn't effective.

I mean, Golson will probably be the QB in the bowl and next year (I'd be surprised if he's not), but I sincerely hope the "QB competition" is more than lip service, because Malik has some skills and I think he could help this team where Golson sometimes fails.

Kelly is too damn stubborn like a lot of coaches. Holgorsen at WVU ran the ball a lot more this year because he adjusted to the team and type of running backs he had. Traditionally he would air it out but that was not the case this year. [We need to hire Paul Johnson and run the option. I]

If you guys remember in 2010 what turned the season around was Kelly running the ball with Hughes and Allen. So I think he does have it in him

I think he does have it in him but the QB was Tommy Rees as a true freshman I don't think he had a choice.
