Looking at the roster and the past rosters....
Who has BVG had to work with who has been able to consistently contribute in good health and eligibility, in practice and in games, this season?
He has had one 5th year player: Justin Utupo [God bless him and his big motor]. [but not a starter-type player].
He has had one senior: Matthias Farley [God bless him for his fire and ability to pay no attention to critics; also good-on BVG for finding him a best position]. BVG had Schmidt for half the season and Hardy for the other half. Joe was really important and the defense good while we had him. Eilar is a fill-in player doing his best, but the defense has tanked without Joe and the others].
He has had two juniors: Romeo Okwara and Elijah Shumate --- both of whom play hard with Romeo understanding his position not perfectly but adequately, and Elijah usually in confusion, thus not trustworthy as more than a back-up. Two super-important juniors, Sheldon Day and Jarron Jones have either been eliminated or chronically hampered for the disastrous second half of the season. Our defensive demise and lost season stems directly from the near coincidental loss of Schmidt, Day, and JJones [and Riggs] with no healthy and solid upper classmen to sub in for them.
So BVG is forced to play with almost entirely Sophomores and Freshmen. We are EXTREMELY fortunate that three sophomores [JSmith, Luke, and Rochell] are as high quality as they are. Another should-be-dependable soph [Redfield] is Shumate-like in his not-quite-getting-it mental orientation.
Even at the freshman level, BVG has been lumbered with critical injury losses [Cage, Tranquill].
One second-team 5th year.... One starter senior [in the nickel package]... Two second team juniors ---- ONE STARTER UPPERCLASSMAN healthy on defense!
Anyone who thinks that anyone who didn't have Alabama's or a pro team's roster could deal with this by even marginally holding it together is.... well .... I won't use the words.
BVG is "my" DC of the future. If he gets a healthy roster and another practice season to upgrade certain players' understanding of how to play college football, I am very much looking forward to his "product".
