We're going to have a lot of tough decisions to make with 5th years barring some transfers. Going to be tough tell someone like DD he can come back and tell someone like Carlisle/Farley/Schmidt/Hegarty to take a hike.

Not worried about it all. The day we play with a full scholarship roster will be the day.

I'm with you insofar as I'll be celebrating when we field a team of 85 against our first opponent in September, but I doubt ND is ready to oversign (even modestly). Take a look at the list of tier-1 5Y candidates from this OFD article:

QB Golson

OL Martin

LB Schmidt

DE Williams

CB Farley

WR Carlisle

OL Hegarty

OL Hanratty

And that doesn't include Daniels. I'd say this list is in descending order of 2015 importance. Assuming DD returns, we are already going to have to ask Hanratty to walk. Jamabo and Aliz'e (or a DB) would take Hegarty's and Carlisle's spots (both starters this year, which has never happened before). Beyond that, I have a really hard time seeing the staff replacing Farley with a freshman.

The kid has a ton of experience, both at S and NB, and he's played very well for us this year. Since Safety is one of our two biggest needs heading into next season, we can't afford to lose him. Which means we aren't going to sign another freshman that might force him out.

Whiskey, do you think we will have transfers. If so, who and how many. I'm thinking 2 or more.

Don't we get some extra leeway with kruss and Ishaq coming back later.

So hypothetically Hanratty, Carlisle, etc can stay until summer when we would have more clarity?

You are right. At best 85 is really 82 with ND not oversigning. Which is fine, just get good players...and BK doesn't just do that but really deveolps.

But what a great problem to have...all these studs, which to keep?

I think under BK we will always be right at 85. This next season will be the first time that the entire roster is "his."

Wait, is there anyone on the current roster who's a holdover from the Weis years? I'm drawing a blank.

With all due respect to OFD, there is no freaking way you put Hanratty/Hegarty/etc. in the same "tier" as Golson, etc. Those guys are completely expendable.

Lombard/Collinsworth were from the Weis/Kelly combo class.

God, are those really are only 5th years? I just think that we will always have solid 5th years to choose from under Kelly. Much more than we ever did under Weis/Willingham.

I wouldn't say "completely", but yes with the depth we have at OL. The young ones will more than feel their shoes. If they don't, we didn't sign who we thought we signed.

The tier is ordered by importance to the team, FWIW.

I also wouldn't call offensive linemen who have started and/or are currently starting as completely expendable.

I know we have never been at 85 under Kelly. So your thought may need some revision.

I'm 100% behind DD returning. All these guys will get asked back for sure, unless there are lingering injury issues. You simply don't turn down starters for 5th year spots, unless they are not good. Williams is awesome for depth/rotation purposes.

QB Golson
OL Martin
LB Schmidt
DE Williams
CB Farley
WR Carlisle (only kind of a 5th year)
OL Hegarty

Barring some huge unforeseen offseason catastrophe (LOL!!!!!), this team is going to be sick next year.

DD likely means one of ESB or AJ are out. You need to take 1 RB, 1 DB, and you have a tough decision to make with the receiver.

I think by the start of next year's season, redshirts removed, Hegarty becomes a casualty unless he picks it up over the second half of this year. Ultimately I think we see a few transfer anyway, so he'll probably be safe. I can also see Carlisle being an odd man out with some of the rising talent. We've got 7-8 quality WRs on the roster right now not counting the WRs coming in. He has the ability to be a great option, but with the depth, do you pass on an option like ESB, a 4 to 5 year guy who also has bros, for one more year of Carlisle?

I think you are right on Carlisle, I was kind of thinking of him as an honorary junior because of his injury. He's kind of an enigma.

As for Hegarty, I think the OL is already starting to pull it together, so its probably moot. But I'd be very surprised if he didn't get asked back.

And next year will be the first time that the entire roster (true frosh through 5th years) will be entirely Kelly's. We have two 5th years on the roster this year. That is pathetically low. I don't think you see a number that low again under Kelly, and therefore I think you see us pretty much right at 85 from here on out under Kelly as well.

We have 7 current contributors or guys in the 2-deep (Golson, Martin, Hegarty, Hanratty, Schmidt, Farley, Councell) who could be brought back. This doesn't include Grace, Ishaq, Daniels. Those are 10 guys the staff would probably love to have in 2015, and there wont be room for many of them barring some sort of transfer exodus.

I think that is going to be the norm under BK more so than only having two 5th years like this season, especially with the amount of linemen we have been able to RS.

Isn't Utopu also a fifth year? He was one I was a little surprised got asked back but has provided nice depth up front.
As for next year, this 85 scholarships thing is a nice problem to have. But we'll have a couple of never-gonna-play-here transfers - we always do come spring - probably a couple of medicals (Is Hounshell done after this year?), the inevitable flunk-out/cheat/back-home babymama and probably something as random as Will Mahone losing his shit in a cop car. It'll be fine.
