Davaris is not coming back next year. He has already said goodbye and that he will not play anywhere else because Notre Dame is where his heart is. Sorry I have just seen it posted by a few people, and I am pretty sure that it is a foregone conclusion that he is gone.

That was the first train of thought but later comments by his father and others say the possibility of playing next year is real.

DD said his time here is done. In the 24 hrs following that, his dad said they were given the optiont to return and that that door wasn't closed. Idk of he meant DD was still considering it or if he meant the school left it open.

True, there aren't any dominating teams this year but assuming Mariota and Winston are gone I would say that Golson and Dak Prescott are the best returning QB's with significant experience in CFB. A lot of teams will be ushering in new QB's and while you're almost guaranteed to get a couple who come out of nowhere and light it up Golson will be a guy who has started a National Championship Game, whatever big bowl/playoff this year, and 2 full years of playing meaningful games with BCS and playoff implications. I'll take a QB with that kind of experience going into our schedule any day.

If the hype around Prescott persists, he's gone. He already said he'd go early if he got a first round grade and would consider it even with a lesser grade. Could make for some big time hype around Golson in the preseason.

You are so silly...

...everyone knows they only give the Heisman to Freshmen QBs with questionable morals and bad off field decision making skills

Im not giving up on this year at all, in fact I think this team will run the table and make the playoffs this year. But honestly I think ND has a great shot at winning it all next year with everyone coming back, the schedule, and the depth returning. As long as there are no suspensions or critical injuries, we return the best ND team in decades.

Agree entirely, based on projections alone next year's team should be the best in a long time.

The problem is ND has entered a state where there is always a large number of players who are on the verge of not making it through to next year. This makes it impossible to project one year to the next. When a single guy gets caught cheating or is arrested or suspended for grades or suddenly departs for the NFL unexpectedly, you can explain it away by pointing to personality quirks or poor decisions or whatever. When it happens to multiple key players each year, it is systematic. We are now in a state where Kelly puts together very good teams, year after year, with lots of players who are in a vulnerable state at ND. It is a much better bet to look at the projected starting lineup and assume at least a few of those players won't be playing next year. It may be b/c KVR doesn't come back, b/c Day and Jones go pro, or b/c someone gets tossed, not to mention injuries.

For fans, this means you have to embrace the current team. I've learned to really, really like this team even though I've been doubting their potential all year (and I'll admit it, I'm still worried about a letdown). It means also you have to brace yourself for the next shock to the team, b/c the recent history of the program suggests that there is a high probability it is coming.

I don't want to be "that guy," but I have it on pretty good authority that Day will leave after this year. I'm fairly close to some people who were on his high school staff.

Prescott could be gone because I can see Mullen bolting to Florida and Prescott needing to do what's best for him at that point....Miss St will regress just because Mullen isnt around; but add in losing Prescott? SEC cellar-dweller status is back where they go......

Now if Mullen passes on the Florida job AND Prescott stays......watch out SEC....

Word? That would be a shame if true. Has a chance to be a first team All-American.

I agree. I was shocked when that was said to me. He never struck me as a 3 and out player. Not to mention, I'm not sure how high he will grade out.

What's Sheldon's family situation like? Does he feel a need to support them ala Irish Chocolate?

Be a shame if he left after 3 alright.

TON of talent in that lineup, but teams don't win championships with guys 1-22 on the roster, they win with guys 23-85. There will be injuries, there will be attrition, there will be unexpected issues that come up. If you want to win it all, depth is the key, which is why I'm really optimistic when it comes to this team next year. Look at the potential backups we'll have in 2015 (in parentheses).

I don't want to come across as overly optimistic or hyperbolic as there are clearly some areas of concern there (interior DL being the main one in my eye), but I don't think it's ridiculous to argue that that 2nd string unit would by and large be competitive in the ACC, Big Ten, and, perhaps to a lesser extent, the Big 12. The offense in particular is absolutely loaded across the board.

I don't want to be "that guy," but I have it on pretty good authority that Day will leave after this year. I'm fairly close to some people who were on his high school staff.

I hope Day stays. He and Smith seem like the 2 guys on D without a true back-up.

He will most likely be back but he anybody leaves early for the NFL I will never blame them. It's there professional job and why not go when your draft stock is the highest.I am sure Sheldon will ponder it but I believe he will come back.

ND's past weighs heavy on this fan's heart... Over the past 20 years I've seen more than a couple of these, "It's ND's time" years and they tend to go very badly...

I'm focused on this season...

I'm with ACamp here-focused on this year. However (haha-I'll play), that roster Buster laid out is sickening. One point of caution-teams change during the offseason. We always think our schedule is bad@ss until the season starts and then opponents start to lose games that weaken the schedule. The opposite could happen as well.

You KNOW there is going to be some sort of off-season thing that comes up and loses a few guys... only happened the last like, what, 8 years?

That's why it might make sense to focus on finishing this year strong and bringing home another steller recruiting class. Shat always happens. Sometimes it's good things like Riggs.
