Trevon Sidney, ATH, 5-11, 160, Bishop Amat Memorial High School, La Puente, CA already has a Notre Dame scholarship offer, among many others. The four-star prospect is one of the most sought after recruits in the class of 2016 and Notre Dame hopes to defy the experts who have him as a virtual USC lock, a prediction that Rasul himself disputes.
“I don’t have a top group of schools yet,” he said. “I am still open to everyone. I like USC but still open. I still have time.”
Sidney is being recruited by Notre Dame Quarterbacks Coach Matt LaFleur who recently stopped by Bishop Amat to encourage him to take a visit to South Bend.
“Notre Dame is one of the more recent offers for me,” Sidney said. “Coach LaFleur stopped by to see me after their season. He said that they need to get me up there so I can check out the facilities, the school and see what Notre Dame is about.”
Notre Dame would appear to have an advantage in Sidney’s recruitment. His mentor is former Irish linebacker Kory Minor. However, Sidney reported that Minor isn’t trying to push him towards South Bend.
“He hasn’t been in my ear that much about Notre Dame,” he explained. “He said they have a great alumni base and he talks good about them, but he hasn’t told me that I need to go there or anything like that.”
Sidney led his team’s charge into the California playoffs last season. The Lancers made it deep into the playoffs before bowing out. Despite the successful season, he knows that there’s still work to be done.
“It was a good year for us, we made it to the state semi-finals,” he reported. “I think I did pretty good this year. I had 56 tackles and five interceptions on defense. On offense, I had 38 catches, 540 yards and five touchdowns.”
Sidney continued.
“There is some stuff I will need to fix for next year, but overall I think I did well. At cornerback I need work on my technique a little more. I wouldn’t say I got sloppy, but I need to work on it. I can work on coming up and tackling better. On offense I want to work on perfecting my routes.”
Sidney faced Notre Dame commit C.J. Sanders this year and Sanders described him as the best player he played against. Sidney was similarly complimentary about Sanders.
“I remember that C.J. was a great competitor and really fast,” he said. “He was great competition too. He was one of the best overall players we played against this year. C.J. played quarterback, running back and receiver. It was tough stopping him when he was on offense.”
Sidney plays basketball in the offseason but still manages to find time for some football.
“We are doing some 7 on 7,” he shared. “Next year we are going to have a great team. This year we lost only six seniors; three on offense and three on defense. We return pretty much everyone next fall.”
