Not ripping Chris Brown but what's his deal? Two straight off seasons everybody on this board is saying he is gonna break out. I never believed it but then Brian Kelly is saying how Chris is a different player and then the games are being played and I keep thinking to myself where is #2?

He's the winner of the 2014 Gary Gray Award, which goes to the player most overhyped by the coaching staff in fall camp.

Seriously, though. What is his deal?

Hopefully DD gets back so CB can get better matchups.

Yeah, i didnt read the last page. But CB will benefit from a QB that can throw the 25yard + passes. He has improved his route running, but needs to take the next step. He is getting in and out of breaks better and gets off the better. The next step is getting the route separation and fine tuning the finer parts of selling one route while running another. He will be fine. The GO and Post route are his best routes bc there are few that can hang with him in open field. I think you may FINALLY see that Vertical passing game next year. I think something similiar to what Baylor runs is coming to the bend next fall. There is too much speed at WR to keep things in a 20 yard box and when they have gotten the chance to go deep this year its worked. Those chances have been few and far between with the run game being so so. Zaire can extend the defense with his arm and running ability. Itll be a different passing game next year.

lol look at dis post

Please keep in mind that Chris' father has posted here in the past. Don't post anything you wouldn't feel comfortable saying to his face.

He needs to step up. But he is also dealing with different coverage he hasnt seen before. Rice double teamed him for most of the game. He needs to get off the line better and he needs to stop pressing. 3 games in he hasnt had the best results, but there 9 more games lol. Kelly could do him a favor and throw him a bomb once a game to keep that as a threat. Right now, the deep ball is non existent and thats kind of shocking.

Take a page out of Purdue and Rice's playbook and hit him on some crossing routes or throw him a screen. Robinson got a screen last game but CB hasnt had one all year.

Enough with the excuses. I'm ready to see it.

If we're in November and still talking about this then I'd be concerned. As long as he steps up soon I think he'll be great this year.

This strikes me as a confidence issue and nothing more. He seems like a hard worker and he's obviously very talented. Throw a couple gimmes at the kid against inferior opponents - a screen, sprint EG out to his side and throw a simple out, run a reverse, put him in motion and run a sweep - and let him build some confidence. Get the ball in his hands and let's find out if he's a play maker.

I think this lines up with what CBK has said, that Chris works as hard or harder than anyone on the team but he just needs to relax and let it happen on the field.

Hate to do this because 1) I'm probably off base and 2) Well, you'll see...

There are plenty of coaches, Lane Kiffin in particular, who get their guys the ball. They will run specific plays directed at their playmakers. I hear BK talk about this alot. But I don't think he does it as often or as creatively as other coaches. Like mentioned above, run some different routes for CB. Let him make some simple catches. Hell, run a reverse. I don't care. Just get the kid the ball. There are so many playmakers on this team and I feel like the play calling in general has been semi-suspect. ND is avg 36 ppg so there shouldn't be too much complaining. However, I don't think I'm the only one that sees it could be a lot more.

and all those damn empty sets ...
Agree x10. Our playcalling would be fine if BK wasn't afraid to design QB runs, but he is. Everett gets almost all of his rushing yards on broken pass plays because BK sees him as a delicate flower to be protected. If were were designing some QB runs here and there, we could call some of the same exact plays and have more success because our opponents would have to defend them differently. A read option "look" isn't effective if you never actually EXECUTE the read option.

Breezy isn't that dominating to warrant him getting the ball above other players. If there is anybody I'd want getting more touches its Gregarious.

He doesn't have to be the go-to WR or the face of the offense, but it'd be nice if he was at least a threat. He's extremely fast and that speed should be utilized.

I agree that Bryant needs more touches and needs more plays designed to get him the ball in space. He's been fun to watch so far.

i feel like Fuller has taken the deep threat role from Breezy, of course were hoping it would step in and fill the void that DD has left but it looks like the staff trust CRob more for this role.

You never know unless you have a bird's eye view or the ball's going that way, but Brown hasn't been open in the plays we see on TV. He's not getting separation for whatever reason. Either he's not faster than the DBs or he's too weak to get off of the line. IDK what it is.

It's not like he's running wide open and just can't catch, he can't get open.

Which is why I made the comment that the staff should be more creative in getting him the ball. If he's lost his role as a deep threat because he isn't fast enough or strong enough to get separation, then it's time to either find other ways to get him involved or get someone else in there who can get open and make plays.

10 rec for 117 yards and a TD the past two games. Excited he's started to pick it up and hoping it continues.

I really think he has received the brunt of defensive attention up until the last two games since Fuller and Robinson have been so productive. He still needs to work on snatching the ball, but you can only take away so many threats. It seemed to me that Fuller and Robinson were defended well by Stanford and Chris Brown made the catches that were necessary. Very glad for him.

I will be the pessimistic Patty. I'm not saying he's turned the corner yet, ala George Atkinson vs. Oklahoma treatment.

Needs to be more aggressive, get separation and off of the ball, and his hands need to improve. His TD was a well executed offensive play that any of our WRs would have scored on IMO.

We need him, so I hope he uses this as a spring board.

But the fact they are getting him the ball on routes he can have success on is big. I understand the need for the curl route and the out route, but crossing/drag routes are what "explosive" offenses make a living on. Getting players in space at full speed = GOOD.

Id love to see CB, Amir, and even Fuller get the rock on some plays going east/west and let them use their speed after the catch.

Now the middle of the field isnt going to be CB's forte, but ND never uses the middle of the field unless its a 60 yard bomb. Itd help guys like CB to try and hit the seam a few times a game to open up stuff on the outside.
