Sorry worst call in CFB didn't even happen on the field. It was when Texas and Texas A&M decided not to play each other anymore.

Got to throw the illegal blocking call on Boston C! USC is a joke along with Haden being reprehensible!

Tonight, Rice kicked a 53 yarder with no time left in the half. They were running off the field when they realized there was a flag on the play, 12 men on the field against TAMU, they said it was a dead ball foul and made Rice take the points off the board forcing them to now kick a 48 yarder which was blocked and returned for a touchdown. But there was an unsportsmanlike penalty on the TAMU bench so they took those points off the board penalized them 15 yards and TAMU took a knee to end the half. No way Rice should have had to take points off the board on a penalty against TAMU though.

So that's why they call it the 12th Man...

It was a dead ball foul, so the 53 yarder technically never happened.

I didn't see it but apparently in the broadcast they said it was the wrong call. Should have been Illegal substitution and Rice should have been allowed the option of the points.

Did a google search found this:

12 Men on Defense

But to stir the pot a bit, check out Play #10 in 2011 Bulletin #2.
10. Team B has 12 players on the field but they are not in any sense “in the formation” as the team tries to make adjustments. The twelfth player is racing to get off the field and is near the sideline when the ball is snapped. RULING: Live-ball foul for illegal substitution. Five-yard penalty at the previous spot. Treating this as a dead-ball foul could disadvantage the offense and they must be allowed the option to decline the penalty.

I'm pretty sure it's a dead ball foul because it's a safety issue, and I think I saw a similar call made in today's USC-UGA game. But I could be wrong, I don't really care enough to look into it.

Not sure any of these are the worst....I kind of lean to that Colorado 5th down (just because it was such a collective failure). From an ND perspective, I would say the MSU Little Giants sticks out the most, again(as stated by others because it seemed there were several different fouls. Have heard about the mystery calls at USC during Ara's first year, but never seen video, so hard for me to say.

There are some bad ones in here; not sure the first two seem quite as 'off'. #4 is REALLY bad, and #5 and #6 are terrible too....

This one was bad from a few years ago....even reviewed, and the replay official watched it from a ridiculously stupid angle. Seriously, from behind the kicker you can clearly see the ball pass in front of the uprights....how much more indisputable do you need?

Another call that involved ND: still scratch my head about the 'Roughing the Snapper' call in the game against Washington in 2009.

I don't remember the exact year, but didn't Todd Marinovich throw a winning TD pass like 3 yards across the LOS against ND? I have a memory of something like that happening.

If the refs in the Iowa v Fla game weren't investigated for fixing something is wrong. Blatant.

I think that some sort of technology needs to replace the chains. Some of these spots are horrid:

You are over thinking it. With technology spotting the ball, chains will not be necessary. Plus some bad spots have decided many a game. The gif is just funny.

I like the theory, just would be interested in seeing how it was implemented.

Haha IDK man. Let's figure it out and make some moolah. Initial ideas include rfid tags on the ball and some embeded receiver grids in the field turf.

I saw some laser based technology.... It looked very well designed, cheap, and durable...took like 30 seconds to calibrate before a game and was within a fraction of an inch on repeatability trials...NFL evaluated it...kept the chains...I have no idea why, but influential guys drive the NFL...most named Benjamin...so somebody somewhere in the NFL was going to lose by doing it...

That said...I think chain distance is probably reasonably reliable...its the human that spots the ball that sucks the worst. Some of these guys are crooked and/or crosseyed. Too painful to watch at times.

I've had the same thought for hockey to make it automatic for when the puck crosses the line. RFID tags were my initial thought as well.

Yeah it's not the chains so much but the use of them. Example....last night in the last drive of the UGA vs USC game, it's a 4th and inches. USC sneaks it and gets stopped. The chain guys move the chains and then the refs are instructed to make a measurement, so they chains have to be "reset". Needless to say the location of the ball and chains was contentious and even then it was not clear the nose of the ball was even in line with the edge of the pole.

If there is ever something that could be manipulated its the inaccuracy of visually spotting the balls location .

This is beautiful. My buddy hates watching a ND game with me because i'm always bitching about the spots. It can make a game go either way. The chain is fine. As someone said it's the bias in the refs that ruin it. We can fire somebody in a rocket and land them on the moon but we can't come up with a way to do this right?

yea...in the instance you cite, and for general movement of the chains...still full of human error...

I think this is honestly not a controversial call at all.

1) The play was blown dead. You can argue otherwise, but take into account that the sound of any whistle even INADVERTENT stops the play where the ball was when the whistle was blown. Just this previous Friday, we had a player on our team make an interception with a chance to return the ball to the house. A referee (nearly 5 seconds AFTER the interception happened) blew his whistle "inadvertently" while the play was going on. As fucking awful as it was, the play was dead where the ball was when the whistle was blown.

2) The elbow is down.

UCONN "fair catch"

UCONN "fair catch"

UCONN player evidently does not signal for fair catch in TD return against Louisville... Fair catch signal looks obvious to me.

Definitely should have been called and it basically ended the game. They did have a 4th down play after that in which they got sacked, but that play would have changed everything for WSU.
