I appreciate that it seems a little far fetched, but the cursing (and instances of cursing by getting around the filters) was both far easier to moderate and far less frequent when the filter was last put into place. While there was a reasonable and perfectly expected number of gripes about having the filter in place, content and participation did not seem to at all suffer because of the filter. In contrast, even taking into account the off-season slump in discussion, at least some moderators and certain high-quality posters have commented on how a lack of respect/civility/decorum/level-of-conversation has disrupted threads and lead those same posters to take some time off of not just contributing to but even reading the boards.

In an ideal situation, I would have a bigger staff of moderators who are able to catch every post and make perfect ad hoc decisions on what is an is not gratuitous or excessive. We've tried that since dropping the filter a few months ago and it simply hasn't worked and, trivial or pedantic as it may seem to some, we've watch a few high-quality posters leave because of it.

To answer you, gk, my goal is to maintain the same level of respect and thoughtful discourse that was the cornerstone of bringing this board out of the the post-Svoboda vacuum to where it is today. I am convinced that the primary reason we are thriving today is because we tend to be a bunch of well-informed, thoughtful, welcoming guys. The trend since we've taken the filter offline, from my estimation, has been to move a little away from that (evidenced by the departure of certain long-time members) and until we find a more complete/balanced way to keep things at that level we're looking for, the filter is probably going to stay there.

If possible I liked the idea that was brought up earlier of not allowing curse words anywhere except the Lounge. Having said that I couldn't imagine having the Rumored Violations thread without some cursing (especially those first couple of hours).

As to the bolded, you earlier mentioned that this isn't a democracy and their has been many valued members weighing in for keeping the cursing (and who are willing to go on the record as being in favor of the cursing) but you seem to be using these few members who left because of the cursing (while not even naming them) as the reason for re-instituting the ban. While not exactly the same, I find the reasoning to be slightly odd. The best way for me to state why I think it is odd is to look at it the opposite way, if a few high value posters were going to leave if you didn't allow cursing, would you change your mind? If not then why are you changing it now?

I do appreciate the fact that you engage us about the rules and are willing to listen to us (in fact I would say that this is one of the things that I enjoy most about this board, not just in this conversation but also in past ones that I have had with Mods here in particular Whiskey and Beau).

I see where you're coming from. To be clear, the opinions of the posters that I keep bringing up were not determining factors in my decision. Their opinions did, however, make me think about the way conversations have trended since the filter was turned off a few months ago and whether that trend is consistent with the approach that has been essential to growing this board into the community it is today. I mention these posters and their opinions because they demonstrate for me why this site has grown the way it has compared to other comparable free Notre Dame boards: thoughtful discussion, welcoming members. If these characteristics, which I think are essential to the board, are hurt by instituting the filter, then I would definitely reconsider my position. However, the site was doing very well even despite the filter when it was last in place. Let me know if that answers your question; I'm happy to try to explain.

Removing the filter made the site better. Posters have more personality and it makes the site more entertaining. I can find ND info all over the web, I come here for the characters (and info too). You ****-sucker mother ****ers amuse me.

I routinely ignore comments made by the people most important in my life - g/f, mother, father, brother, boss, colleagues - with little to no difficulty at all. I find it hard to believe comments made by anonymous posters are so offensive that they simply cannot be ignored. And if something struck me as so offensive I simply couldn't ignore it and move on, I'd just block the poster. Seems like an easy fix.

I buy that it makes the place a little less colorful and for those to whom swearing is entertaining, then the place is a little less entertaining. That said, thoughtful and welcoming discussion has been essential to the growth of this community in the past and those two characteristics have taken a hit since the filter was turned off. I very much hope we don't lose any members over the fact that their swearing will be replaced with asterisks, but my primary concern is over attracting and keeping members who are well-informed, thoughtful, and welcoming.

The swearing, in it of itself, doesn't make the site more entertaining. The freedom to post our opinions, with minimal restriction, helps develop the characters on the site. The characters on here are one of a kind and that's what makes this place better than the next. Why anyone would want to put a muzzle posters like OG, Lax, Whiskey, Steelhead, BobD, Nuke, NDAccountant, etc. is just beyond me.

Bunch of grown men using asterisks in place of words. Completely absurd. We look like losers. Just one man's opinion.

Well, as demonstrated above, I think I've got the plug-in set up properly now. The filter should be in effect in all forums except for the Lounge.

I did run into a few issues while trying to post, but I think I've worked most of those bugs out. If you have problems posting or seeing your post, send me a PM so I can work out some of the kinks in the new plug-in.

Except for here in the Lounge, the new filter will replace certain words with "Michigan". In addition, posts in the Lounge will no longer pop up on the Front Page. This has the added effect of making Notre Dame related news more easily accessible to readers and I figure a few more clicks to get to the Lounge page won't hurt.

This is not meant to give you free range to fail to be welcoming and respectful toward other posters while you're in the Lounge and the moderators will have a much lower tolerance for posts that cross the line.

As always, I welcome any thoughts or questions.

It's definitely not scientific or quantifiable. These are conclusions formed after some observations from a few of the moderators who are familiar with the level of discussion that we would like for the board and who spend a good deal of their time reading through the board as well as after receiving input from long-time members who have decided to post and visit less frequently due in part to the gratuitous swearing and the drop off in the quality of content that they believe coincide with, even if it isn't caused by, that.

Well I'll just say I disagree that the overall discussion on the board has gone down. Most of us understand implicitly the difference between peppering our argument with language to make it more persuasive, and verbally attacking each other (with the exception of Michigan fans who mouth off). Further, I'll say some of the most intelligent arguments/discussions I've ever had regarding religion, philosophy, race, and politics have happened since the filter was shut off.

Lastly, I'll say that any notion that turning off swearing is going to allow more teenagers and women to come to the board is troubling to me. Firstly, teenagers cuss. Probably more than they should, but on the whole more than anyone. Secondly, the women thing is sexist chivalrous garbage in my opinion. Women aren't going to need to fan themselves while they read this board in their aprons because someone uses an adult word. They're adults, they like to cuss too.

This is how communism starts. Replacing words said by individuals with words from "The Man".

Pham and Mods are now to be called "The Man" and in not a good way.

I don't care if the filter's on or off. I just find it funny that it was on, then someone decided to take it off at one point, just for fun, lol.

The "Michigan" substitution is funny and I appreciate the thought but practically it's a bit awkward. I would prefer just using asterix filters. My perusing of threads this morning seems to indicate others agree.

I'm being that guy again but this actually bothers me more than anything related to filtering. I personally never ever ever use the forum tab and access threads exclusively from the front page and my user CP after I subscribe. This change is going to force me to go to the Lounge all the time to check if there's a new thread. While one or two clicks isn't much in isolation, over the course of a month or year it's going to add up to a lot of time wasted.

I suspect I'm not the only one who uses the website this way. Please reconsider this.

I always go to "new posts" first.

Why would you not use the New Posts link in the header? Aggregates all new posts across the entire forum since your last visit. So much simpler than using the front page/CP.

Wow. In 3+ years years on the site I have never noticed that before. I can tell you where to find random unimportant things but never saw something staring at me in the face.

Pham--ignore my last post (i'll delete it) as this solves my issue completely.

WTM (What the Michigan).

I never saw that either. The hours I've wasted...

After week 2, can we start hating USC again? I feel like there's bonus Michigan hate flying around since we only have 10 days to fuck them. I've always hated USC more they're basically Michigan but in California, which automatically makes them worse.

If I start posting pics of myself wearing nothing but a smile and a strategically placed Notre Dame pennant, they may just have to.

What the Michigan is going on here?!

Ha, I already started using the new filter before it was implemented!

This....this is awesome, I think it's a happy middle ground. I completely forgot about it, but Buckeye Planet and other boards often replace certain words with "Michigan" too. BP also replaces shit with "Mark May," so it reads like "This is a load of Mark May." It's a fair compromise as we're not actually saying obscenities...and yet we are. It's like a little joke within the board. Can we shake it up though and replace some words with "USC?"

I disagree. It can be a bit confusing the first time you encounter it, but it grows on you after awhile. You may find that it will creep into your everyday speech after you've seen it for awhile. "Excuse me, I need to use the restroom. I've got to take a massive Michigan."

I agree, but can we have it for just two more weeks? It will die off after that.

You guys know that you can go to your User CP and it'll show you what threads have updates in them too. The only caveat is that it won't show you new posts in threads you haven't posted in yet or haven't subscribed to. I find it's handy if you're not interested in following every recruit's thread, or if you're not political then you won't care that the politics thread is updated.
