Trying to make this a difficult pick. In the first four games, we could see (fuck)Michigan put up big points that would cause concern. If the other teams put up big points, then it's easy to take the under.

Stanford doesn't normally put up big points but NC does so the halfway point seemed like a good compromise.

What say you?

Rice
Michigan
Purdue
Syracuse
Stanford
North
Carolina
Florida State
Navy
ASU
Northwestern
Louisville

I said under because I am keeping my expectations extra low this season.

But I think once we see some house blitzes and Redfield/Collinsworth getting beat over the top or on a crossing route, we will have some calling for BVG's head. Whether that happens within the first 5 games remains to be seen, but I think it will.

By who? There are always fans who set unrealistic / unreasonable expectations then immediately demand change (usually for the sake of change) when the on-field product doesn't like up with their preconceived notions.

I hope most fans are rational and realize we are implementing an entire new system with an extremely young defense, now missing it's two most physically talented and experienced veterans, with depth issues on the DL. It should be exciting to watch, but we will give up plays / points.

I just hope we can create a few more big plays / turnovers ourselves in this system, and our offense scores enough each game to keep us ahead against inferior opponents and competitive or in the game to the end against the strongest teams.

You are rational. Most people on this board are rational. But often, simply saying "I accept the fact that we will give up some big plays once in awhile with this defense" is different than those people actually witnessing it with a keyboard or phone in front of them and 6 beers deep. I bet in the game day thread and on Twitter, within the first half of the season we see some of this.

It doesn't mean it's smart, rational, or whatever. But it will happen. And it's stupid.

It took Ga well over half the season to start understanding BVG's defense. But once they did they were lights out. I would hope some Irish fans give him a chance to get his system in place before calling for his head. And as Ironman pointed out, right now, he is dealing with the prospect of having his best cover corner not being available. That alone will change how he calls his defensive plays. The man deserves some time... even if the defense is less than steller starting out.

But, to answer your question, I will go with the under. Too many fans who don't understand the game will weigh in early and often.

I wish we didn't have fans dumb enough to prove the under... But we do. New system, young players, concerning D-Line depth, tough schedule.. We're going to give up some points. But we also have some elite athleticism and a bunch of game ready freshman so we could very well be surprised.

Kelly has his offense in place so it should ease the transition.

I'll be ashamed of any fan calling for BVGs head in week 5.

You guys already figured out where I am going with this. I am interested in the numbers and to see where everyone thinks we'll be BUT...

I'm really just putting this out there as a reminder that it's been a long time since we've given up big plays. Diaco was one of the best. It's also been a long time since we routinely forced turnovers or had multiple sacks in games.

Let's hope the loss of one is the gain of the other but it's unreasonable to think we are going to be world beaters with such a young squad. My hope is in the offense, we must out score opponents and if the defense gives us the ball back on occasion, all the better.

Exactly. There are 3 basic factors for why Gameday threads generally suck:

1) Hype of what the season was promised to be in their minds versus reality
2) Alcohol
3) The fact that most quality posters leave the site on Football Saturdays to go watch football. (SHOCKING)

I'll reserve judgement until the Navy game. If they rush for 300+ yards again you'll know how I feel.

we are going to average giving up at least 20 a game and I know that so people will call for his head but it will fit the teams plan

I'll save you the suspense, teams like Navy will run very well against this defense. It's not because they aren't good, but stopping the run isn't a priority in our gameplan.

Score fast, score often, create turnovers.

That's our gameplan, get used to it.

Not even close to reality. Where do you come up with this stuff?

We'll give up points to Rice and Michigan and once Purdue hits us over the top early people will lose it! And that's with still winning all three.

BTW in BVG's 1st year at Georgia as DC they finished 17th nationally in scoring defense and 6th nationally in rushing defense. Their starting DL consisted of a JR., two SOPH.'S and a FR. That freshman was David Pollack who actually played DT that year at 6-2, 260 before moving to DE his remaining years there.

I won't guarantee it but if BVG has proven anything in his previous stints, it's that he's unafraid to load 8 or even 9 guys in the box. We may give up 200 in passing but I doubt we give up 300 in rushing. We'll see.

I think our Dline will be suspect but a team like Navy that grinds the triple option all of the time will be planned for. We said the same with Diaco so we'll see.

The 'Natty or Bust' crowd will prob. want his head by halftime of the Rice game, definitely by halftime of the Michigan game...

The level headed base?? Gawd, let’s hope we don’t see any cries for his head at all, that'll mean happy things.

If we win, there won't be too much griping. If we lose to michigan, people will be pissed, but michigan always gets lucky and pulls off some voodoo bullshit against us. I will be furious, but I don't have any expectations for this season beyond beating michigan so that's a different matter. But after FSU puts up 55+ on the defense, then you'll see people sweating. So slightly over.

If Rice scores a FG, he should be fired right there on national TV.

Never, I actually like BVG. BVG is a major upgrade over Diaco

Hated Chuck Martin as a player caller, great football coach though. He can come back whenever he wants. Just not as a head coach right away.

I couldn't stand Bob Diaco. Fucking hated that guy and he did nothing. D was so vanilla. Even Alabama said they didn't change anything they do and everything was always the same. Any D coordinator in the country could have played stout D with the players we rolled out there in our championship run season.I think 5,9,7 and 17 where the reason our D was stout. Took him 3 years to figure out how to stop on option attack. The defense game plan against Michigan and Stanford always drove me nuts. He didn't recruit, he reminded me on a teacher from Hogwarts. Alex Anzalone told him to get fucked which I think is funny as hell. I am done ripping Diaco I am sure he is a great guy but I think he was the most overrated coach I can remember.
