This a ploy by a republican governor to in an attempt to win the votes of young people. There are some young republicans out there but don't more often than not youngsters vote democrat.

They do in Centre County Pennsylvania. There are three consistently loyal voting blocks for Dems in Pennsylvania -- Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Centre County.

Yuck.

What exactly has changed since they took it down?

Kids were molested under his watch - nope

He didn't stop it - nope

He fired Sandusky - nope

He quit letting him bring kids on campus to rape in the showers? - Oh... this must be it. Now that he's gone, the child molestation stopped. It must be okay to honor him again.

Was just thinking about this. How long until someone vandalizes the hell out of it?

Doubt it will happen. People im State College love Joe. Anyone who did this would face the wrath of the community. Not sure where they will place the statue but I assume some place really publoc and there is always seome around in downtown State College.

I'm mainly talking about outsiders. State College gets filled with tons of traveling fans/people with allegiances to other Big Ten schools virtually year round, and "pranks" of statues, etc. are already commonplace in college athletics without the vitriol that Paterno elicits from some. The one saving grace for Penn State might be that they don't really have a #1 arch enemy style rival like a lot of other places.

Either way, unless they plan to put permanent 24/7 surveillance on the statue (which they might) I don't see any scenario where someone doesn't go Bart Simpson on it.

Someone should make a real nice matching statue of a random child and weld it sitting on his shoulder.........

living right in the heart of it...i can tell you people around here do NOT believe the great paterno did ANYTHING wrong and to this day still idolize him as some god on earth...it's disgusting and the students would do a complete beat down on someone who tries to damage it...remember them rioting over him ? then camping outside his home and having vigils for him....here is a pic the owners of a local bar called DOMERS did to an RV parked in the parking lot :) of bar

Where do you live? I spend a good bit of time in the State College area -- especially in the summer. Lots of family in the area.

There is tone-deafness and then there is State College.

What a disgrace that they are going to spend thousands of dollars on a STATUE when they could use it to actually do something important like raising money to help fight child molestation. BUT NO, honoring a man who did nothing to raise awareness ON CAMPUS.

Alums more worried about MONEY than they are about helping the victims.

Just absolutely disgusting.

Maybe he wasn't interviewed for the positions because he sucks as a coach.

Jay Paterno was considered a joke as a coach even when Joe was still coaching. I'd be shocked if he would have been considered for high school head coaching jobs around State College.

This is from a while ago, but the statue would be downtown state college, which is off campus.
