I have no idea if Schraeder has a clue or not. However, a poster at BGI that was recently made a mod believes its true. TIFWIW, but I do respect his opinion. Loy points out that with a OV to ND coming soon the timing of a commit would be seem a little strange.

...and I hate to bring up Buffalo Wild Wings for fear of being flogged on the internet but I was talking with some young guys who played in the area, including one who was Niklas' teammate at Servite and he said ESB is going to South Bend without me saying anything about ND.

Funny that this comes out today. I stand by what my Crystal Chicken Wing says:

ESB is Irish.

I'm guessing ESB is a Trojan, when we start seeing smoke like this, it often turns out bad for us. It's happened twice this year with the '16 recruit to USC and Barnett's decommit.

I'm prepared for the loss but it's a bigger loss for ESB than the Irish.

I've been in this game long enough to know that when there are "rumblings", it's probably at least partly true. Hopefully he comes on his OV and we remove all doubt.

In all honesty... his position as the tall receiver is populated by a guy in Robinson who will be at least a redzone starter as a Soph and Miles Boykin a player with similar height and NFL body from day 1. With the young talent that's at the other two spots, ND doesn't exactly provide him with a path to quick playing time that other schools might. There are a lot of schools that will afford him the path that Robinson had at ND last year. Nothing would surprise me but the word out here on the street is he likes ND.

This is what I think. I believe there is some truth to it but to what extent I don't know. Keep in mind that this isn't completely out of left field as it was a USC/ND battle. I will say that TJ over the last month or so has mentioned that there is a lot of place holding going on these days in recruiting and that it really means very little. Where these kids OV or if they do is the real tell. I agree with that.

We're coming up your way to see Town fall to ND's 2020 Heisman winner Malik Henry around Halloween. Always room for another Loyal Son...

The whole Marmonte is way stacked. Then you throw in the Pac5 division and it's easily the toughest in the country.

I don't know the Marmonte at all but I do know you have Town, Henry and Brady White within a stone's throw. Add that to the stretch of the I-5 from Corona down to San Clemente and I've NEVER seen anything like this in high school sports recruiting besides banner years in Chicago public league basketball. EVERY weekend there are 2-3 games with a top ten QB who's headed to a top 10 program. Gonna be a fun fall here in LA/OC.

Not every kid is worried about the depth chart and how soon they can get on the field. By the time he gets here CB will only have two years left. Add in the fact that you never know how injuries and leaving early for the draft will affect depth. BK has already shown he will play freshmen, so if he's good he'll see the field soon enough.

I'm confused guys. How could it be partially true that he silently committed? Or am I missing something?

Obvioulsy Irish... I was just pointing out the state of the depth chart. I want ESB as bad as anyone as I've seen what tall receivers / TE's have done at ND since the days of Fasano, Stovall and Samardzija.

I guess what I was getting at is there seems to be more grey area in recruiting than ever. Kids are committing to hold spots but its really just their leader. Maybe ESB did commit to hold his spot but has every intention of taking his visit t ND (not that big of a deal). Maybe he gave the USC staff some exceptional feedback and the truth got stretched into a commitment (again not that big of a deal). I don't know what it is at this point but I think it was something positive for USC in regards to ESB's recruitment.

Here's a gradient:

1) Brown says I like USC
2) Brown says USC is in my top two
3) Brown says USC is now tied with ND
4) Brown says USC now leads
5) Brown implies to USC this is where he wants to be, wants to take officials
6) Brown formally commits to USC coaches, asks them to keep it under wraps, wants to take OVs
7) Brown commits to USC, asks coaches to wait so he can deliver news to ND coaches over phone, shuts down recruitment, no OVs.

Based on the rumblings, I'd say anything between 4-7 could have likely happened. Which of those it is makes a huge difference.

Thanks for the clarification.

So either way, not good news for us, but hopefully it's not to the degree of a legit commit.

The only real negative would be if he shuts it down. I don't see that happening at this stage.

Schraeder has also said flat out that Ross is a USC lock. He pulls zero punches... way more out there with his statements than most analysts. It gets him worshiped by some USC people, but others deride him as a homer. He is wrong more often than any analyst not named Lorenz.

In 2012, it was an epic meltdown. He went to the mat calling everyone else names and saying they didn't know what they were talking about... and then the class imploded just like how everyone said. Was embarrassing to watch his backtracking.

Let's just see how we do and how USC does on offense this year. Nothing is solid, even up to and after signing day!

So to recap the past ~ month, of the 3 we had the best chance with an supposedly lead with, Coney put Florida back on top, Bilal is allegedly headed to Michigan, and St. Brown silents to USC?

We can't possibly miss all three.

I don't necessarily buy into the view that there should be a "tall receiver" position (height is a benefit until it impacts movement, and that tradeoff point isn't static IMO), but I will agree we have a few guys who are plenty tall to be redzone threats during their careers if ESB takes his talents elsewhere. Also, it sounds like we could move into decent position with Cager with an offer, and he's supposed to be just as big with some impressive physical tools.

I'd love ESB to be Irish, but there are positions I'm much more concerned with.
