What is the role and desired skill set of a WR in Brian Kelly's offense at ND?

I hope no role. At the rate we are going, there won't be any WRs left.

Answer: Catch the ball when thrown to, block somebody when not thrown to.

On the blocking subject did you see how excited BK got when he talked about CJ being 220 and blocking from the slot position. It was pretty obvious he likes his receivers to be good blockers.

This. He is really excited about C.J. on offense.

1. Catch ball
2. Run very fast with ball until in the end zone.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2.

Reps for the SNL reference, used to be funny back then.

WR? We appear to be phasing them out in favor of RBs and TEs.

I don't know. We did last year because our two most effective offensive football players were a RB who'd played some WR, and a TE. The year before that, getting the ball to our hugely talented outside receiver was a very big part of our offense. Next year our system might look quite different.

I think Kelly and Martin are flexible enough to adapt their offense to the guys they've got, which is why losing Neal stings so much. You can say "oh, well, we don't really utilize our slot receivers," but he had the potential to be a pretty dynamic playmaker no matter where he lined up, and I'm sure Kelly would have found ways to get him the ball. Plus we've not since Clausen had a QB with the arm and experience that Golson will possess going forward, and you've got to think that will open up the passing game in ways that a guy like Neal would only accentuate.

No, you are right, stl, I was just kidding

It did occur to me while typing that you might be employing super-secret sarcasm font, but I was so far along at that point that I decided to just keep rolling with it.

Another thread for people to post, "I haven't a clue!" Not because the are not smart; simply because they are not Brian Kelly or Chuck Martin. This year's offense won't look like last years, and this one will tear a few peoples teeth out.

Yeah I know. Every year is so different. I keep trying to find an offensive identity each year and it is always different. Now it seems like he was really concerned with getting a defense in place and building roster depth, and the offense maybe took a "back seat" for lack of better words....

Anyway, this was a meager attempt at humor in an otherwise unruly off-season day....:)

Hey, you know what? This year I don't think the offensive identity is going to be stolen. I have started to notice something. One of the two gleams in BK's eyes. (The other being any mention of Jarred Grace.) Big strong wide receivers that can block; blocking on the edge; blocking down field. Every receiver except Corey Robinson, that the coach has commented on, it has been blocking skill first. Corey he said can catch anything in his zip code, and needs to move in with Paul Longo; translation: Corey needs to get stronger so he can block at the edge and down field.

In other norts spews, have you noticed James Onwaulu quietly dominating defenders with his blocking? I mean turning and walling them off? There was a good shot in the last practice video; he looked like a miniature lineman.
