I'll admit it: I've never seen it with this guy. I'm not high on our receiving corps as a whole, to be perfectly honest, once you get beyond Daniels. They'll all look better b/c of Golson, but I'm not optimistic about any of them for this year.

That said, if Chris Brown doesn't catch another ball in an ND uniform he will still have a legacy in my mind b/c of his role in the most beautiful, important play of the 2013 season. I will always remember that.

And on the other stuff, I'm hoping, praying, that he and the others prove me wrong.

So Will Fuller and Corey Robinson didn't impress you enough last year to give you optimism for this year? A WR group of Daniels, Robinson, Fuller, and Brown is pretty legit imo.

I think Robinson is in line for a big year... Golson will get him the ball and I expect him to be a main red zone target

I think we should have the expectation that each year our players will get better. BK preaches player development and not all 85 or so players will see it each year but a large number I expect to. The young WR corp is one that I expect to be much better this year because of growth but also Golson/Zaire. I think what we saw last year from Fuller and Robinson was very promising and I expect growth from there. Add that to DD, Brown, and the TE's I think our passing game is in good shape.

I think this is the best and deepest receiving core we've had since the Shark, Stovall, and McKnight era. A lot of guys will be fighting for playing time, starting from DD all the way down to Justin Brent.

Here's my humble breakdown of where the receptions will go:
2011 class:

1. Daniels- has ability to take over a game if healthy. If Golson hasn't improved in his field vision and progressions , daniels stats will be fantastic and will bolt to the nfl. However this will be awful for the overall offense.

2. Koyack - one of several now or never guys. I see decent production but more importantly his defender will have their hands full and weaken our opponents ability to defend other wr's and the running attack. Overall wonderful asset to our offense.

3. Carlisle - another now or never guy that hasn't had the ability to shine. Our offense last year was contained to a 20 yard box and there was limited room for the slot. His role will be very different and could be huge!

2012 class:

1. Brown- I feel like most Brown will mainly be used to stretch a defense and will make some big plays. If he has developed his route running he could be on the field a lot with his size advantage over Fuller.

2. C.J. - this is my breakout player pick on offense. I am a huge fan of C.J. And feel he will have a fantastic year running short routes across the middle and destroying db's run blocking.

13 class:

1. Fuller- with Fuller we have the ability to have a fresh legged home run hitter on the field at all times.

2. Robinson- Mr. Reliable! Will have another year of moving the chains on third down and red zone touchdowns.

3. Hunter- Mr. unknown. I really don't have anything to add but hope he is and stays healthy.

2014 class:

1. Brent- EE that looks like a college sr. If he is on track from neck up, he must get reps. Sky is the limit here.

2. Holmes - tough call but good candidate for a preserved yr of eligibility in 14 for Corey.

I would say that we have reason to be optimistic but besides Daniels we have very little proven talent but lots of upside. I am still a little worried about WR but it isn't because we lack talent but because we lack proven players. After Daniels, we have Brown with 15 and Koyak with 10 for receptions last year returning. I would say that upside/talent doesn't always mean the player will produce so there is some reason to be hesitant about our WR corps.

If Golson can help John Goodman have a respectable SR year then I'll bet most of our WRs are in line for some huge production

The whole offense is pointed to a major production increase. Having three guys that can play every skill position, keeps fresh legs on the field. I think this group is made for each other and will give opponents fits.

What do you mean by respectable?

Here is Goodman's 2012 statline:

7 rec, 159 yards and 3 tds. While the 3 tds are nice 7 receptions are a long ways away from respectable.

Everett is gonna have a day with Rice.

I don't even want to hear the word "rusty" if he doesn't...

I think Golson gets A LOT more credit than what he depicted in 2012 and deserves for 2014. He used his legs a ton and was effective but his throwing wasn't the best, but good. I think we get our panties in a jumble from excitement with Golson because he CAN RUN. We aren't used to a dual threat QB since we haven't had one since Jarious Jackson. The more hype Golson gets the worse the embarrassment will be if he/ND doesn't have a successful year.

In fact, it was Goodman who helped Everett. He was all alone against MSU and Wake Forest for the TD and Golson threw late forcing a contested ball, and Goodman won both when it was not easy. And Brown, without Golson, he would had better numbers in his freshman year. He was alone in the end zone two times against MSU and Golson did not see him.

I hate first games because they always hold back ahead of Michigan. I pray EG and Co. light up the scoreboard and show scUM it's on.

I agree. I've never liked that mindset. They should go all out in a route and say "Here it is. Try and stop it."

Disagree. Golson dramatically improved as the season progressed. Remember that a lot of his early season lack of production was BK's play calling and trying to ease him into the offense. Once the reigns we're let loose, in what I believe was the Miami game in Chicago, you could see his confidence rise. The fact that he quickly got better with experience and his time with Whitfield should give every Irish fan plenty of confidence is his ability to have a huge season.

Guys.

Golson took us to the National Title as a first year starter.

When was the last time ND was in the title before that?

You can say the defense was key in 2012, and youre right. But Golson was the difference against MSU, (Rees isnt making that throw to Goodman, or running for a TD), we saw what happens when Rees plays elite competition (Oklahoma), and Pitt was just something of a fiction story. Golson threw a bad INT, but then made 3 of the biggest plays in his career to take it into OT.

He didnt have huge throwing numbers, but he didnt have great WRs at the time either. The kid is a winner and that means a lot.

Yes! And the fact that opposing Ds had to game plan for his mobility made a huge difference as well.

TP - what do you project the WR and TE depth chart to be game 1, and by mid season?

He's got a laser-rocket arm.

He can buy himself time to use the laser-rocket arm.

He's trained with George on how to refine his laser-rocket arm.

He's got a deep group of WRs to target with his laser-rocket arm.

He's gonna be just fine.

Oh and Malik too, because they're both gonna play a lot.

I expect Brown to get his chance for sure this year. I think distributions will go in this order:

DD
Koyack
Brown
Robinson
All Others.

I'm gonna have to disagree with this. We saw how limited Brown's opportunities were this past season with Tommy at the helm. Golson may have missed him a couple of times, but that's no different than having a QB that can't get the ball to you, even with the proper read.

Don't sleep on CJ Prosise and Amir! Increased opportunities in the passing game should open up things for the slot receivers, rather than relying on a TE as the only "inside" option so much. One of these guys will have a big year.

I hope you are right!!! My gut is telling me Amir will start out the year, struggle, and CJ will eventually overcome and start. That said, I think there will be a bit of back and forth which will more or less split the carries.

Koyack will have the most targets this year imo

And here's another "I hope you are right", because that means he's consistently getting the job done. Somewhat like my thoughts on Amir/CJ, I have a gut feeling Heuerman stakes his claim if/when Koyak struggles. I think ultimately Heuerman is a better ball catcher, so IMO if he has put on some good weight and can block consistently, I think he eats into Koyak's targets. Just a gut feel.

Could see him having a big game this week. Certainly Fuller/Carlisle will see extra attention.
