Still my favorite underrated player. Hopefully he earns some playing time this year and becomes a staple in the LB corps for the next 4 years.

After the spring game, a guy I know who used to play for BVG and still knows him well told me he doubts that Martini, Deeb, or Kendall Moore ever play meaningful snaps under BVG. They just don't have the lateral quickness that BVG wants in his defense. The change to the 4-3 really hurt guys like that...they just need thumpers like Diaco did.

For example, at the beginning of spring, we heard all about Moore and how he was a different man and how he was taking football more seriously, and he was getting a lot of reps with the first team. By the coach's clinic, he wasn't even in the 2 deep IIRC, and by the spring game you never even heard his name as a possible starter.

It was just one guy's opinion, but it was someone who would know. So IMHO it looks like Deeb has a tough road ahead of him if he wants to contribute.

Who do you have starting at linebacker against Rice? Smith, Schmidt (Grace if healthy), and Councell? I really hope Morgan can get in there

I think he'll be just fine. This guy's opinion.

Great question. Definitely not Grace IMHO bc I can't see him getting back to 100% by that game. I see Smith, Schmidt, and a giant question mark at the other spot. Turner, Onwualu Councell...whoever steps up this spring. Definitely a position to watch.

Looking at their film, Deeb and Martini seem to have pretty decent lateral quickness. They get up and down the field well. Maybe not as good as Morgan, but they can still get to the football in a hurry. It maybe too late for Moore. Looking at Martini's film, he seems to be slower than Deeb but has better agility, as he can drop into coverage extremely quick. I see Martini more as an OLB. I don't see them struggling to develop, but they may have trouble getting legitimate playing time, simply due to the players ND is getting, which possess more lateral quickness and speed. Still, I think they contribute down the road as reserve LB's and ST studs.

I have a feeling Deeb and Martini will be in on short yardage packages when needed over the next few years. BVG is running a NFL defense with sub packages for different scenarios.

From what I saw at spring practice, he isnt a 3 down LB right now, but hes got 4 more years to go. No one expected him to play last year, and he now has a chance to get into a package. Thats all you can really of him at this point.

Could see him getting some playing time against a team like Stanford.

Not credited with any tackles, but obviously doesn't mean he didn't play.

Surprised Morgan has seemingly surpassed him as #2 at MLB already. Good for Morgan, bad for Deeb. He'll be a good ST player if nothing else hopefully.

I think it has more to do with the faster/up-tempo offense. I think Deeb may struggle in coverage.

Tough position for the kid, because I really believe he has skills to play on this level. The problem is that he doesn't really fit what the defense wants to do on an every down basis. I think he will definitely fit in down the road in a situational role, and make some plays for us, but probably not more than that.

I wonder though, is he any slower/less athletic than Joe Schmidt? Maybe it's just a mental thing. I remember during his recruitment he always had a very motivated and positive outlook on everything.

Could be that the transition to a high level college team takes some time. Not worried, see the patience with Ishaq.

I could see Deeb having a Utupo type impact when hes an upperclassman.

Might be the best we can hope for if he's already getting passed for backup spots by true freshmen. I know a few people got high on him but there was a reason he was ranked low. For all I know he may end up a late bloomer and contend for a starting job or he may end up Josh Atkinson 2.0, and make no meaningful impact on the defense.

Also was probably a better fit in Diaco's defense.
