It's actually not that stupid.
he did not think he could compete for the starting spot.
You don't have to necessarily "descend" in those ways for more aggressive recruiting. You can take the arrogant "we're better than those guys" approach.

I submitted a request to cancel last night and my reasoning was I couldn't justify paying money to watch an "expert" gloat about steering a high school kid to his favorite team. Got an email about 15 minutes ago saying my request was fulfilled and that they hope to see me back as a subscriber soon, without addressing anything else I said.

You got an automated reply. To have any effect, you need to get in touch with the so called "editor in chief".
Don't we do this? If not, we should. It's Notre effing Dame, who the fuck would want to get a shitty degree from Oregon when you can get a degree from an elite school in both the football world and in life. It's fundamentally driven by academics, but the coaches should start playing up the ability to say, "I went to Notre Dame," in real life. It's instant respect.
Regarding Blake specifically, a few thoughts:
1. 80% of me is thinking who cares. This is recruiting for a silly game and I refuse to get worked up about some fickle high school kid. Wake me up in February when I can actually look at the class at face value. All of this "Verbal" crap is nonsense. It means nothing until you sign the paper. NOBODY is committed.
2. Let's stop recruiting California.
3. I don't know if there is some unwritten ND rule against negative recruiting, but we should really consider starting to do it. IMO, there is nothing wrong with negative recruiting when everything you say is true. Put it all on the table and expose other programs and schools for what they actually are both on and off the field.
They don't care about your money.
They would only care about all of our money.
Until ND can take the talent they HAVE and string along 10+ win seasons on a consistent basis-this is going to happen.
Kelly seems to have acquired some talent over the past few years and the O looks like it'll turn the corner. I certainly hope the "The Stache" can rejuvenate the D and bring them up a level. If so, these concerns fall by the wayside. If not, this will continue to be an issue.
Worrying about what a HS player will do is a losing proposition. Let them choose. Let the Staff do what they can. Move forward. Rational thought processes lead to a rational outlook on recruiting.
Win and they will come.
I got the automated reply last night right after I submitted it. Tonight's was from someone in the billing department (actual person), but you're correct I should try to find someone higher up the ladder.

Yeah, someone in billing making $10 an hour doesn't give a crap.
Did we offer this guy?
start a thread on canceling 247.
homerism and steering kids.
Anybody wanna go grab a beer and talk about the time Blake Barnett was committed to ND?
Ahhhh the annual mind bending decommitment from Notre Dame. I feel sorry for the coaches in all honesty. It must get old hanging their futures on the decision making skills of kids..
What's even worse about this particular one is the level of commitment not only Blake but his parents showed.
Let this be the lesson that inches you back from the recruiting trail. There are no sure things. Take solace in our current roster, it's come a long way.
