I honestly have no idea if Oregon has produced a starter, but we aren't exactly on fire in that department lately. BQ and Clausen both flamed out rather quickly.

They are both still playing though. Is there a Oregon QB in the league?

Not to mention, ND has a pretty impressive history of NFL QBs, and I really can't remember the last time an Oregon QB was on a roster for more than a year or two.

Well I see our emotions are a little more in check than last night! lol

Given that his parents are pro ND, I still like our chances. They will listen to why he wants to go to OU, then they will
1. Tell him how much more a degree from ND means.
2. Tell him that playing in the NFL isn't a certainty.
3. Remind him on what attracted him to commit in the first place.
4. Make sure BK gets an opportunity to reply back to all of the positives and negatives OU sold him before he reaffirms or de-commits.

Does anyone know if BK can do an in-home at this time?

Forgive my ignorance, but do we know that his parents are pro-ND?

Real talk: Since we have the parents in our boat, I think we will still sign him when it's all said and done. Can't blame the kid too much for wanting to see what the Oregon mystique is all about.

Dan Fouts was on the list. Joey Harrington and Akili Smith were both #3 overall picks, Smith obviously busted bad but Harrington was in Detroit for a while (less than impressive). I think the better point is, with the ridiculous offensive numbers they put up for years why hasn't Oregon become a QB factory?

I didn't want to push the point too hard since Quinn and Clausen don't have NFL careers to brag about. Then again, Tommy got that UDFA deal....

I think a few plp have stepped away from the ledge. I know i have.

Lets just hope that he lets the excitement of this visit wear off and he still loves ND like we do.

Haha. You're obviously Frank the Tank in this situation here.

I about quit the site. Not that it's IE's fault obviously, but I almost gave up recruiting all together.

No, he's not going to break our program. But he's good enough to 'make' it in the next 4 years IMO.

I'm over it (not really, but pretending until if feels real).

Golson for heisman. Fuck Michigan. Suck a D Oregon.

I'm sure the IE Legal Society can dig up chapter and verse, but it seems like head coach in-homes don't usually happen until after the season's over. Don't know if that's strategy or NCAA regulations, but I'm not even sure Kelly on a plane to Corona is a good look right now. Send in LaFleur. Get the kid to II. Tell Oregon (and Hopkins) to go smoke a joint in the rain. We got this.

I say offer Tommy Stevens out of Indianapolis. Poor man's Barnett - love his highlights. That's if we don't hold onto Barnett or get any traction with the kids committed to other programs.

Welp.

This is a few years old but I am pretty sure it still stands: http://colsoc.com/Portals/0/NCAA+Recruiting+Rules.pdf

NCAA Recruiting Rules
1) A college coach may not have off-campus contact with a recruit until July 1st (June 15th for Division II) after his or her junior year in high school.

Funny I saw him play last year against Franklin Central and wasn't aware he was D-I talent.

For those scoffing at Oregon's QB's in the NFL, Mariota is projected to be the 1st QB/1st round pick in 2015.

For a 2015 recruit, that trumps a 1st round bust 8 years ago and a 2nd rounder from 5 years ago that nobody has heard from in several years. Neither of whom, by the way, were coached by ND's current coach.

Also, those of you dismissing Chip Kelly/Mark Helfrich QB's, where is the list of QB's that Brian Kelly has put into the league? And what tape of ND football (the recent past) can BK put in to show Blake of how he will be utilized?

One of my knocks against hiring BK when ND did so was in recruiting overall (which he has clearly shown he can), but also in QB recruiting specifically. They got rid of a coach who could recruit QB's because of his pro-pedigree (Clausen, Crist) for a guy who seemingly ran a spread system. What QB's would be champing at the bit to play for Kelly the way Clausen and Crist were for Weis?

I'm hopeful Barnett still chooses ND, but I think QB recruiting and development will continue to be tough for BK until he actually produces a player that not only excels in his college career, but then has a draft showing and/or pro career to put to rest a potential QB's concerns for going to ND.

I'm not trying to disagree completely with you, but I always feel like we need to place context to this. The first recruiting class he had was a complete nightmare from the QB perspective. Not a single guy on there fit what he wanted to do, and they were not the people he would have offered. It was just too late to do anything about it. The first real recruiting class brought us EG, and after a redshirt year, he was our starting QB in the title game. Last year he could have really blown up in a huge way, but he wasn't around to do so. The Kiel saga could have had him starting and really showing some good stuff last year, but he decided he didn't like our OC and left - sticking us with Tommy who was a part of that class that BK couldn't really get out from under. Since then we have picked up Zaire and Kizer who DO fit the scheme wanted.

Changes in philosophy impact the QB position more than folks want to admit. And we may see for the first time starting this year what a Kelly QB at ND is all about. I personally hate that it has taken this long, but we haven't had much other option until now. I don't feel like bashing BK is the right method here as he has done wonders with building a whole team. We are going to find the right guys to run our offense, even if we do miss out on the one we really want.

AKili Smith was an Oregon QB taken #3 overall, the 1999 NFL draft.

His career numbers:

215/461, for a whopping 46.6% completion percentage.

5 TDs............. 13 INTs

2.212 yards

Joey Harrington was also the #3 overall pick in the draft, in 2002, and he was also a bust. Not as bad as Smith, but a bust, nonetheless.

If Oregon QBs have a bad reputation, in the NFL, it is because it was earned.

Those QB's were what, 2 head coaches ago? I don't know Barnett, nor his family, but I'm betting they put ~ 0 interest or weight into what happened to Oregon QB's, professionally no less, something like 13 and 17 years and 2 head coaches ago.

I keep coming to Irish Envy fully expecting to see Blake Barnett someone i thought was totally solid to see decommit next to his name. I guess we have to see how the cookie crumbles.

If they want to see successful transition of a QB from Oregon into the NFL, they have no choice but to go back that far. The Ducks offense has a poor track record of preparing QBs for the league.
