Good thing they weren't Chinese Terriers
I am a K-9 handler, everytime me and my partner travel, he wont eat the first few days on the road. Some dogs just wont eat while they are adjusting to a new situation. Try mixing a can of tuna with some dry food, always works for me.
Usually foods with rice are labeled so, it's actually not a common component to most dogs foods but rather an alternative for sensitive or allergic pets use rice instead of wheat and corn as the grain. Dogs can have allergies to all types of things. The alternative to rice in dog food is usually grain, which isn't good for dogs regardless of allergies. I wouldn't assume that all dogs are allergic to rice, in fact, most dogs aren't.
We found it to be quite common as it was in EVERY dog food we looked at in a dozen vet's offices and at the supermarkets and pet shops in our area at the time. We searched on the internet and finally found a duck and potato variety. Nobody carried it on our market but I was able to get one vet that dealt with that company but not with that product into carrying it.
Then you must not have looked at many of the Hills Pet Prodcuts (Science Diet) brands, because none of them have regular rice except the one specifically labeled so (also marketed for dogs with sensitive stomachs). A great deal of dog foods have Rice Shuck (Brewer's Rice) in them, but that is entirely different than actual rice. It's just the outer shell of rice and it is commonly used as the grain product in dry food. There is a distinct difference.

If allergies for Brewer's Rice (rice shuck) were so common, than why do almost every dog food have it in it? It's obviously not that common of a condidition. I called my vet (I had to anyway) this morning and he confirmed this for me. He also stood by his suggestion that rice mixed with hamburger is a commonly recommended food to feed to dogs with upset stomachs and entirely safe.
So there's that...
It'd be Blue Buffalo if we could afford it. Instead, we feed them Iams proactive. First ingredient is chicken, but there's a lot of corn in it too, so we supplement that with vege scraps mostly. They also get the leftover stuff from when my wife makes chicken stock. Stuff like that. There's a theory that I buy into that dogs evolved on the scrap heap. That worked perfectly for a long time until hamburger helper showed up there. :/

Congrats Steelhead. Can't wait to get out of school so I can get a dog.
We use Blue Buffalo as well....Our two Aussies love it. They even have a corn/grain free version.
I highly recommend
