Most Overrated Movies

Les Miserables was pretty good, actually.

He was actually pretty good in The Prestige as well. As was Bale (a Christopher Nolan movie, actually).

Still, on that list of four, it really is only Spacey. He is one of the best I have ever seen. The man can literally play any role.

I know it's subjective, but I really think it's crazy that someone would disagree with Leo being a top 4 actor.

I'm not saying he is a perfect actor, but again to suggest that he doesn't have range as an actor is absurd. Just look at his roles (off the top of my head):

Big - Really funny
Forrest Gump - Impressive combo of drama / comedy chops
Philadelphia, Captain Phillips, Saving Private Ryan - Great dramatic roles
Sleepless in Seattle, You Got Mail - Mainstream RomComs
Toy Story Trilogy - Amazing voice acting
Cast Away - Stands alone, I'd say Hanks is one of the only people that could pull that movie off.
Catch Me If You Can - Really effective in a supporting role

Even if you don't like some of those movies, a lack of range is one criticism you just can't reasonably give Hanks. You can put him into type of film and he'll make it work.

No Tom Hanks list is ever complete without...

I never said Spacey is perfect but just like someone just said about Hanks, Spacey definitely has a lot of range as an actor and can pull off just about any role.

Let's not forget one of Kevin Spacey's most elegant portayals...

Road to Perdition
The Green Mile
Saving Private Ryan
You've Got Mail
That Thing You Do!
A League of Their Own (My Favorite)
Turner & Hooch
The Da Vinci Code
Charlie Wilson's War

He's one of the greatest Actor's that ever lived. Anyone who thinks otherwise is being a contrarian.

I know it's subjective, but I really think it's crazy that someone would disagree with Leo being a top 4 actor.

I have no gripes with Leo, I think he's tremendous. But I also don't think it's crazy to say that there are a good number of actors just as good as Leo, like enough to make several "top four" lists that don't include Leo at all.

I think:
Tom Hanks
Rober De Niro
Daniel Day Lewis
Russell Crowe

Just missed:
Morgan Freeman
Johnny Depp
Denzel Washington
Kevin Spacey
Heath Ledger (the Joker is all you need)
Leo
Samuel L

Out of the ten not named Leo in the above lists, you could make any combination of four and I wouldn't call you crazy for not including Leo lol.

You're right, but I just love his passion and you can see it in his eyes in the film how much he buys into his character. I mean, he took the movie 'The Beach' and made it a good movie, and without his intensity that movie is a D+ at best.

My opinion on your list: Like Deniro, don't love him.... Morgan Freeman has very little flexibility and I think he's overrated.... Depp, love him.... Denzel plays the guy who dies every movie with a gun. Great actor still, but not top 10 IMO.... KEvin Spacey we obviously agree on... Leo we agree on.... Samuel L Jackson, great actor, not top ten IMO.

I actually really like Will Smith. I'd put him above Denzel because he can go from funny, to action, to serious/heart tugging and Denzel hasn't done that IMO.

No top actor list is complete without the Master Thespian.

I agree with IrishLion10 too. Leo is great, but there are at least 20 modern guys and even more old hollywood guys that I could make a case for above Leo.

I think Freeman goes pretty well from "enjoyable, funny character playing God/guy with an awesome voice" to "complete fucking asshole." One of my favorite movies (and also terribly underrated IMO) is "Lucky Number Slevin" where Freeman plays a guy that I absolutely despise but love at the same time.

Several of the guys on my list might not have the complete range that Tom Hanks does, but not many actors actually do. I like De Niro, Washington, and Samuel L as top choices because they have mastered their specialties.

Also, I didn't even consider Will Smith. He's underrated.

Will Smith is a modern "triple threat" ala singing, dancing, and acting, but Denzel came up through the theater, transitioned to the big screen, and is now back doing theater. He has played tons of various roles (Glory, Philadelphia, Training Day). Not sure I see Will Smith being able to carry a Broadway production nor being dislikable or a bad character. And you are crazy regrading Morgan Freeman. Maybe its because I remember him from the Electric Company.

Hanks, Leo, Denzel, DDL, De Niro, Pachino, Freeman

Sean Penn is also really underrated. He was A+ in Mystic River.

Seriously think you guys are overrating Freeman by a long shot. One trick pony.

His best work was 'The Poop that took a Pee'.

Shawshank is probably my favorite movie of all time, so I strongly disagree.

I just don't think his role which never changes, is ever that difficult. 'Never change your tone or demeanor and smile once in a while'.

My opinion.

Shawshank is on my top 5, but it's not because of Morgan's acting.

Joe Clark disagrees with you.

Shawshank is yet another movie that I don't understand all the love for. Then again, considering it's just a movie version of one of my favorite books, I'm probably biased against.

I don't necessarily disagree but Drive is one of my all time favorite movies. Love the character he plays and think he was perfect for it.

But like you said...he does play a similar role in a lot of his movies.

Morgan is one of the best actors of all time and certainly several levels above Leo, who pretty much plays either a pretty boy, an asshole or an asshole pretty boy in nearly every role from The Beach (which was actually VERY bad), Titanic, Catch Me If You Can, Blood Diamond, Gatsby, Django Unchained to Wolf on Wall Street. He may be passionate but he only plays a variation of one role in every movie.

#KnowYourRole

He was actually pretty good alongside Emma Stone in Crazy Sexy Love, which I know I pretty much watched just because of Emma Stone....which could be another thread all its own (i.e., what actor or actress will you always watch, or something like that).

Although the Spider Man movies really need to stop because rehashing the Gwen Stacy arc is just not working.

Crazy Stupid Love was actually pretty awesome. My fiance asked me to watch it recently, and I figured I'd be sleeping or playing Clash of Clans on my phone the whole time... but I ended up laughing my ass off for most of the movie. Gosling was really good, but I would say it was more alongside Steve Carell than Emma Stone. He played a great womanizer/asshole to Carell's clueless and too-old bachelor.

Yep. Saw that movie because I heard great things about it and I love Steve Carrell in most movies. He's one of the actors I see basically everything they do (Tom Hanks is another one).

Death to Smootchy is a vastly underrated movie. American History X is probably the best movie I will never watch again.

Haha, have to disagree here... DtS was one of the worst films i have ever seen... that, and Dude Where's My Car gave me hope when I was trying to sell my scripts years ago... "if those two complete pile of craps can be made into movies, then so can mine. "

I do like Ed Norton though...
