I think you know this but it isn't a matter of Tyrion simply "choosing" someone. That person has to be willing to fight on his behalf.

Sure, choosing might have been the wrong word. I think that the "chosen" champion would definately have to be a willing participant. Oberyn could be motivated to step up because of his hatred for Grandpa Lanister, especially if The Mountain becomes the chosen champion of the throne. It would be an opportunity to get the revenge he came to King's Landing for in the first place. Jamie might be motivated by protecting his brother, who he beleves is innocent of killing Joeffrey. I could justify either one of them in my head at this point. To this point in the show, a lot has been made of the hatred Oberyn has for The Mountain, so if he is in play, it just seems like a perfect opportunity for Oberyn to stick it to the Lanister's and to avenge his sister's death. As he told Tyrion in his first appearance on the show, the Lanisters are not the only ones who pay their debts.

The whole encounter between Oberyn and Tyrion was awesome. Made me hate Cersei infinitely more, if that is possible at this point.
