I've got to find a way to get into Wes Anderson movies. I haven't enjoyed a minute of any of the two or three I've tried.
Which ones have you seen? I thought Moonrise Kingdom was well done. After seeing it I was excited to watch Rushmore, but was really let down.
The thing with Anderson is it is a really "artsy" film. His sets are probably the most detailed in the business, and the character dialogue is often a very broken crispness (almost a staccato type thing going for it). When done right I think it is very powerful, but often it seems a bit fake and slow. A bit hit or miss for me anyway. At its best it captures the awkward interactions of ones teen years, but it often is closer to making the viewer awkward and bored.
Anderson definitely has a original, pure, almost "indie" feel to his movies. Usually the story is a more adult take on a children's story, but I think Grand Budapest will be different (it is rated -R), and, as far as I can tell, does not quite have the same fairy-tale feel-- I think the Lobby Boy will bring that element, but not as much as in his previous works. It will be interesting to see Wes working with Hugo Guinness again after working with Roman Coppolla on Moonrise. (I can't make my mind up on Sofia or Roman; I loved Virgin Suicides, but really didn't like Lost In Translation, the Bling Ring (except Emma's tongue); but that family tree has a pass after the Godfather's).
Anyway, one thing Anderson has going for him is that you can tell it is a Wes Anderson film from the beginning. It is kind of like turning on football and seeing an ND (or PSU, Michigan) uniform -- see how I tied that together at the end.
