Trying to paint any decision besides Harvard as a bad one is simply ignorant.

That pretty much sums it up. I turned down Harvard football for something else. Not the same situation as Alex, but there are lots of reasons to choose a PWO opportunity at ND over an Ivy. It makes for good discussion, but drawing conclusions on what's best for a kid we know almost nothing about is "simply ignorant". I will say one look at his twitter and it appears playing at a FBS program was important to him. He visited Michigan right before ND (earlier this week).

As for his potential to earn a scholarship or actually see game action at ND...I don't know. He has some talent and physical skills, but with the guys we are bringing in at TE and WR, it's going to be tough. I wish him the best and hope he makes a positive contribution to the program, one way or another.

Let's rename this thread "Which Ivy Did You [Tell Everyone on the Internet That You Turned] Down?"

I think there's a somewhat inflated view on this board of ND's academic position in the distribution of colleges and universities, but how could there not be a little bit of bias on an ND board?

Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Stanford are in a different group than anywhere else. With the other Ivy's it's entirely subjective, although I do think ND's not quite in that tier in terms of reputation/prestige. But again, you could make a case for ND using some info and excluding other info, and you could make a case against ND using the same approach.

But one key point here is that it would just be much more fun to be on the football team at ND than to be a stud on the football team at, say, Harvard. Playing for Harvard and doing well is one thing, but there's not the thrill factor. I can understand entirely why a kid would pick ND in this case. Who wouldn't be drawn by the chance to tap the sign and run out the tunnel?

And I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that a kid who's that tall and has good hands will see the field, esp if he can find a way to put on some weight.

Yeah Brown kind of sucked. Providence was a decent town but the people at Brown made me want to puke. Dartmouth is also in the middle of nowhere and no one cares if you went to Dartmouth. I visited Williams but the liberal arts education wasn't for me.

Oh yeah if we're talking people/atmosphere/pride ND is, in my completely unbiased opinion, untouchable

Please rename this thread. What's your problem?

Aren't you a mod, Lax (i'm assuming you made this thread)? Then why are you instigating an argument? I thought the role of a mod was to keep the peace, not instigate.

I have no idea what I said that set you off in this way. Honest.

Probably a good thread to say that Duke was my dream school (not ND) but those shitfucking, babyeating, nazi-loving pricks waitlisted me. (I still have issues about this).

My high school sent well over 50 kids to Ivy League schools (about two-thirds of my class 400 person class were national merit finalists and we collectively had better SAT scores than ANY frosh class any college in the country). Many more got accepted and opted to go elsewhere. Our QB opted for Wash U in St. Louis over Ivy options. Plenty of other regular kids opted for Stanford or UVA or wherever for tons of different reasons. Ivy League schools being "better" than comparable top 10 or top 20 peers is nothing more than a myth perpetuated by people who have never seen them up close.

We've had four straight "conversations" where it gets to a point where I just quit because it gets so far down the rabbit hole that it becomes an exercise in futility. So I'm actually going to change my tact and go full NDinLA on this, because you don't have a clue what you're talking about.

Prepare for full jerk mode, no holds barred in this thread. Gird your loins or bring some better facts.

NEVER go full NDinL.A.

Personal happiness is what it's all about. If it is this kids dream to go to Notre Dame, and he can still get a world-class education, then what's the big deal? As a parent, you have to watch out for the best interests of your kids, but also let them follow their own dreams. Preferred walk on at Notre Dame? Not a bad way to go.

When do we start declaring which side we pledge allegiance to? I feel like the line in the sand from hook has been made

This subject is near and dear to me, so I'll respond as soon as I'm able (which won't be until later in the day.)

I realize I am WAY late to this party but could it be that he just simply wants to go to ND? I mean, why does there have to be a reason for him to turn down Ivy? Can't he just want ND over an Ivy because he just does? You don't have to go to an Ivy to become successful...or even more important, happy.

Fun non sequitur: my wife and I met friends for dinner on Thayer Street in Providence (basically Brown's campus) the other weekend and we had an impromptu ranking session of the Ivies. To wit:

Harvard
Yale
Princeton

Columbia
Cornell
Penn

Brown
Dartmouth

Totally unscientific and just our opinions off the cuff. I grew up in Providence and my wife went to Ithaca, so there was that bias (for better or worse).

Similarly off topic, my preference for college is actually little Ivies over Ivies and
the NDs, Stanfords and Dukes of the world. It's all a matter if personal preference. Hard to say someone should or shouldn't go to a particular school for a particular reason. Too much variety and too many variables in terms of what people value.

Sorry to have interrupted. Proceed as you were.

No, he's not allowed to go to ND just because he wants to. Or because he thinks the school is a better fit or because he wants to play big time football or any other hypothetical reason. That's completely unacceptable.

Wooly has already shown us unequivocally how it "is clearly not in this kid's best interest", as he "can assure you that there is a big difference in opportunity between schools like Stanford and Harvard/Yale." IVY > ALL. You better get that straight, Grahambo. As such, "Coming to Notre Dame would be a childish decision" and any good father would be "smacking him upside the head."

I think I'd flop Cornell and Dartmouth in my subjective rankings. Personally, I think there is a pretty big gap from the others to the three Tier 1 Ivy schools and the difference among the other 5 isn't that discernible. The academic profile a kid going to Princeton/Harvard/Yale is pretty big jump up... Dartmouth/Cornell/Brown kids are about on par or worse than a ND or Vandy.

ACTs...
Columbia University Admissions: SAT Scores, Financial Aid & More - 32/35
University of Pennsylvania Admissions: SAT Scores, Financial Aid & More -30/34
Dartmouth College Admissions: SAT Scores, Financial Aid & More - 30/34
Brown University Admissions: SAT Scores, Financial Aid & More - 29/34
Cornell University Admissions: SAT Scores, Financial Aid & More -30/33
Average of the five lesser Ivies: 30.2/34

Notre Dame Admissions: SAT Scores, Financial Aid & More - 31/34

Why are you being a prick when I clearly left the thread be and walked away? I left the thread as I said and let you go one spewing your opinion as fact with no retort. Why did you feel it was necessary to come after me again? Grow up. Aren't you a mod? You know.. a peacekeeper?

I don't want to hear any bullshit from you about education the next time a kid picks Florida or Michigan with the reasoning of "education". Because your reasoning here is the exact same.

Bottom line, for the myriad of reasons I addressed before, Harvard is a significantly better university from an educational and opportunity standpoint. You can choose to believe that it is not if you wish, but the rest of the world outside of Notre Dame fans will continue to vehemently disagree with you.

Sure seems like you're still here. And if you didn't want me quoting your indefensibly absurd statements in a way that effectively undermines your entire viewpoint and premise.... well, then you shouldn't have made them.

Yeahhhhh.... no, it's not.

Oh, I fully think Harvard is a better school than ND. I said as much in post #21. Your opening posts and many, many subsequent ones make it clear though that your talking about all Ivies being > ND. Do I need to quote them back to you? Post #1... post #3... post #10... the moment you unequivocally stated as a "fact" that Ivies > Stanford for career/life was the moment you lost all credibility.

Fact is, ND admits have equal or better academic profiles than many Ivies. That means many kids who qualify for and are admitted to Ivies each year choose ND instead. And ND grads do comparably or better in their careers in every quantifiable measure of achievement. You can try to obfuscate these facts all you want... they're still facts.
