Reading between the lines, I want to alert you guys to the fact that Jarrett probably suffered a compound fracture. A) Shembo and other players could immediately see it; B) Kelly saw it; C) The leg was immediately immobilized; D) he was kept in the hospital overnight.

Compound leg fractures are a leading cause of death in automobile accidents and a leading cause of amputation, (yes, amputation) in athletics. The primary reason is that the shattered bone not only protrudes from the skin, but it can sever the femoral artery.

I hope this in not the case but I fear it is and I hope everyone says an extra prayer for Jarrett, because, though the threat of death is over, this could have a profound effect on his long term ability to play the game. Just wanted you all to know.

His was way lower than the femoral artery as the femoral artery is in the thigh and he had a reported tibial fracture. It doesn't have to be a compound fracture to be obvious to people right away or to require surgery for fixation as this can also happen with a fracture and displacement (bone breaks and two broken pieces are separated). The tibia is the supporting structure in the leg so fractures are often displaced and require fixation for support as opposed to fibula fractures which doesn't provide much support. The tibia is an incredibly strong bone and requires substantial force to produce a fracture so I wouldn't be surprised if Grace had been playing with an unknown stress fracture.

Thanks for the information! Isn't there an offshoot of the femoral artery that follows right inside the knee and down the back of the calf? I mean in the service I saw a guy get the back of his calf (basically blown off) and there was blood everywhere, like right now!

It took pressure, on pressure to even start to slow it.

Didn't know that about tibial fractures. Good to know; I will expect it to be the last I break!

That would be the popliteal artery. If the arteries didn't perf immediately, he should be good. Since the leg was closed you'd be worried about compartment syndrome, but with team docs immediately on hand that should have been looked at.

Thank you and Kak. I was just relying on old (phantom?) memories. Thanks guys for explaining. I understand he already had surgery, which improved his chances of correct alignment.

Most guys I would worry about their frame of mind and positive outlook, Jarrett does not worry me at all, I am certain Jarrett will put this in its place and work his butt off to get back out there with his guys, nevertheless, I will be praying for you young man.

Praying for him. Wishing him a fast and full recovery. Hate to see something like this happen, especially to a kid who was really starting to click. Again, just wishing him all the very best. Rehab from something like this is not easy. And remember these guys still have to deal with school. Tough situation.

Has there been anything said on the time of his return? Obviously out for the season; but my buddy broke his tibia in high school and had surgery the next day. He was able to come back sometime in the spring and do all of our workouts/conditioning. This really sucks for him, i felt like he was getting better and better. Guess this means we'll see mostly fox and calabrese now

Broken tibias also run the risk of causing the knee to work improperly. Lots of cartilage and ligaments that non-smooth bone can damage.

I hope he's ready for fall. I thought he did a good job when he was healthy. He was better than Carlo at the beginning of the season, that was for sure.

Even if he comes back, he won't be where he was last year. He's facing a huge uphill battle.

I can't imagine him being back by fall. Hopefully he can get a medical year.

Is there anyone with medical or sports injury knowledge that can shed a little more light on if it is in fact feasible for him to be back by fall?

When I heard of the Van Gorder hire, I went into my romantic optimism mode and imagined a basically 4-hand-on-the-ground DLine {Springmann and Jones on the inside; Day and Williams outside}, with our three great athletes, Smith, Councell, and Grace arrayed behind them {Grace in the middle}. Behind them were Russell and Riggs at the corners, and Redfield and either Baratti or Collinsworth at safeties {we need a deep back field general}.

So many injured pieces to that dream BUT if they heal, then we will surprise everybody.

Kelly honors piece of his past, defines part of Notre Dame future - South Bend Tribune: Football

Grace status
After Jarrett Grace’s second round of surgery on March 28 for a right leg broken Oct. 5 in four places, Kelly hoped to know by early May whether the senior middle linebacker would be a go for the 2014 season.
Kelly says now that the timeline was a little ambitious and that it would likely be the middle to the end of June before a final prognosis is reached.
The 6-foot-3, 253-pound Grace played in six games in 2013 and had overtaken Dan Fox as the starter when the injury ended his season.
“I was with Jarrett (Wednesday), and he is moving where we thought he would be in a natural progression,” Kelly said. “But he is now in the Torii Hunter zone relative to that rod healing. Torii (an ND wide receiver who broke a leg in January of 2013) had that rod placed in that leg, and then it was a matter of how that healing took place.
“Torii did not heal very well, and, hence, that’s why he was redshirted. We think, based upon what we saw early on, that Jarrett is going to heal, but we won’t know for another four to six weeks.”
Senior Joe Schmidt, a former walk-on, took the bulk of the reps at middle linebacker in the spring but is viewed as somewhat undersized (6-0, 230). Crete-Monee (Ill.) standout Nyles Morgan is the most celebrated of a handful of freshman linebacker prospects who will be added to the roster in June.
“Another possibility is Ben Councell,” Kelly said.
The 6-5, 254-pound Councell was an outside linebacker in the old defensive scheme. He too had his 2013 season cut short because of an injury (knee surgery).
“He’s a big, strong, physical kid that we can do something with,” Kelly said of the senior, “but it may require us to look at a freshman to come in and eat up some plays for us. I think right now, we’re expecting Jarrett to be able to give us something there, but we’re prepared to be able to get through whatever we need to.”

Very interesting.

I've never liked the idea of Councell at ILB because he is such a prototypical OLB with his length and speed, but with Jaylon living up to his potential and apparently set to be an every-down player next year, the idea of Councell getting some work inside is definitely growing on me.

I'm fine with it--since we are moving to the 4-3. He'll still be running all over the place! We just want 3 big, fast, physical kids out there. But hopefully, one of the freshman will show up by the middle of the season and Councell can slide back outside-- I think he is a great SAM prospect.

Randolph seems like another good SAM option.

.... ouch. I am becoming resigned to us playing most downs in a nickel defense [Russell, Riggs, Luke, Collinsworth, Redfield] with four down lineman pushing towards the QB [Day, Jones, Williams, Okwara ... or Springmann if it's more likely a run/pass split play] and two superman-style fast moving agile linebackers [Smith and Councell].

If we can stand up physically, that loads the field with speed and pass defense.

Grace is our best middle linebacker... but maybe we can still survive and thrive until super-rookie matures, due to Van Gorder's genius. Kelly now seems thinking like this too.

Ben Councell at MLB? Yeah..... no. Seems much better suited for SAM than MIKE in 4-3.
