Taking on loads of student loan debt for a bullshit degree is an example of the failures of our generation, not a badge of honor. "Lack of economic opportunity" is because we were told that we could major in anthropology if that was our passion and that we were too good weld, haul, or flip a burger. Everything is an institutional flaw with you. Blame the system. Sooner or later people need to start owning their decisions and the outcomes thereof.

There is some truth in this terms of choice of majors / careers.

Bull crap

There are economic barriers in place that weren't around for previous generations.

You could work through college on a min wage job. Only students that had large debts were grad students. You had places like California University that were completely free in the 60s.

I was $24,000 in debt when I graduated in 1992 and I went to the cheapest state school I could and worked two jobs while taking a full courseload. There are always economic barriers. You need to work your way through them.

This. I finished my last degree a few years back. The first took me forever because I worked through it and paid for as much as I could... life, meet reality. Moaning about how much easier people apparently had it back in the long long ago?..

Well, one thing has not changed, hard work will pay off eventually.

Your situation is simular to mine. I paid the vast majority of my bachelors degree I worked a lot and was fortunate to have a job through connections that paid more than the min wage.

I'm in my last semester plus the summer internship of physical therapy school overall through all my degrees I will owe like 30 grand.

Yes hard work does pay off as Acamp posted. I am not disagreeing that we as a generationscan't work through these barriers. I was pointing out that there are barriers that did not exist for previous ones.

Plus don't these examples prove that there is a lot of young people that do work hard and we aren't all lazy entitled brats? That is all I was saying. I sure wasn't crying for me.

Oh, you've got a master's degree. Are you our master now?

My master's degree is borderline illegitimate. The master of accountancy degree only exists to get enough credits to take the CPA exam. So no, I'm not your master. But I could do your taxes.

I have a child starting college in two years and I am very concerned about how I will pay for it and what both our debts will look like by the time he is done.

Chris Rock quote.

As a side note, I'm currently studying for the CPA exam, have REG knocked out.

Her pops let her out of the house in that dress?

I can't wait until I have kids so I can forbid them from doing stuff.

Good luck with that. lol. Once they turn 18, what you want matters less and less. You can make them do what you want up until then, but not without putting up with some pain. Parenting ... especially tennaged girls ... is not for the faint of heart.

I didn't realize parents were required to pay for their children to attend college. My girlfriend would kill this girl. She is going to school on loans alone.

True Story: I have a buddy that took out a student loan so he could come to New Orleans with a group of us for spring break. Spent damn near the entire amount on booze, strippers and drugs…. the rest he just wasted.

One year the financial aid office called me and said I needed to come up there. I owed over $1200 and had no idea where I was getting the money. My school usually worked with you and I did have two jobs so I was thinking while I trudged all the way up there that I might be able to bargain with them and give them 100 a week for the whole semester and get it paid off.

When I got there, with my head hung low, I gave them my name and told the lady at the computer I had been called to the office. She typed away and as I am waiting to hear "you owe us..." she says, "I'll have your check in a moment."

I said, "Um...what? Don't I owe you $1200?" (really stupid question)

She says, "Well, let me look," tappity tap tap on the computer keys, "Nope. You got a pell grant for $2400. Looks like we owe YOU $1200."

I walked back to my fraternity house staring at the check in total disbelief. I can also tell you I didn't spend a penny on anything I should have, but dang I had fun that semester.

Her parents won't cosign for anything. Anything.

I was in the same boat. Once football ended my senior year of high school, I was cut off. I got $20 for lunch at school every week until graduation and that was it. I had to get a job, apply for financial aid and apply for loans for college on my own.

I got a job on campus, got paid to do my homework, and used my loan refund money to support myself when my student job wage didn't cut it, but it's tough when you're doing it all on your own right away.

I got really bitter at the kids with rich parents often through college lol.

Really? Given what I've read about her, she'd be bitchin' and griping every second.

Ow that hurts, what are you doing?, stop I don't like that, I'm not doing that, hurry up and finish!

Exactly. Some (not all, of course) of the current young generation act as if this is the first time in the history of history that there is some sort of magical adversity to overcome to succeed in life, as if no one previously had to do so. That magical obstacle is called "life".

All parties involved sound like they are to varying degrees LOL.

But yeah, that guy ain't cool. That's the kind of lawyer that gives lawyers in general a bad name.

They should all share the blame equally, IMO.

The parents should have recognized the "problem child" and not allowed her to feel entitled to an easy life without any of the work.

The chick should realize that she's being a douche and that there are plenty of kids who get no support from their parents after they turn 18.

And this attorney deserves blame for enabling her and making her feel like she has a legit gripe.

I don't think that is what they are saying. I think that they are trying to say that the things that make the "American Dream" going to college, buying a house, etc are drastically increasing in price but wages are stagnant. College graduates are stuck with more debt upon graduation and face higher costs in things such as insurance and are thus putting off things like getting married and having a family as well as buying homes. Unfortunately this higher debt that students are carrying is going to hurt the economy in the long run as our economy is very much driven by spending.

I tend to agree with that line of thinking but I do see some issue with it.

Having said that, this girl and her parents are both at fault, as well as the father of her friend who is representing her. The truth is I can't even be angry about it, I just feel sad for them for how they are behaving and the fact that they think this is the way to handle the issue. .

No. It looks like the purpose of the suit is a public shaming of her parents.

I was wondering if there were some issues between the Freeholder (that's a County Commissioner is other states) and the former police chief.
