after watching both Cage and Garnett's film, I think they're pretty even and the one that does something a little better than the other is so marginal that everything's going to be a wash anyway. so I'm going to take the bigger of the two kids and go with Garrnett as my preference.

Isn't Cage taller and heavier?

I thought Garnett was taller but I'm probably wrong.

edit: one listed at 6.2 280 the other 6.3 273 according to profiles so who ever has the bigger frame in person, take.

from what I understood Cage was more like 6'2 and Garnett was more like 6'1. My fear with Garnett is that he will be another Tyler Stockton but I may be wrong

If we don't lock start locking down DTs, we're going to get to the point where we need Stockton's, lol.

I think both these guys have better frames than Stockton. That said, if we'd gone with a pure 4-3 his whole career, you might have seen Stockton in a whole new light. Not saying NFL or anything, but he was never going to find a role in Diaco's 3-4.

Diaco's selectivity and the two gap scheme will quickly get rid of this lull (sp?) in dt recruiting. There are not too many dt's that love the idea of taking up blockers. With BVG's more 1 gap scheme I thinkk dt's will be more apt to coming here. IMO of course

Visit complete. ND made a major move. Drawn even with MSU. Per Loy.

CBK is so hot right now.

Don't mean to be a negative nancy but I feel this hard to believe. I'm new to the recruiting scene but from what I've seen this is fantasy.

The two parts of this sentence are not complimentary of one another. Care to explain how he couldn't be leaving campus with ND tied with MSU?

Nothing concrete. I've just seen Loy say this stuff and it never works out for us. I guess it's my faith in Loy that should be at question. Tis what it tis

I'd take both, if they want to come. If they are all good prospects with real potential, the competition will make at least one into a good player. Let's be picky once we have some depth. This is not WR or TE, were talking about interior linemen. Those guys are at the heart of the battle.

You said yourself you are new to recruiting but this kind of stuff actually works out very well for ND quite often actually. Last year we were not the leader for several players we got in late with and we ended up signing them. One of them ended up getting out of his LOI after the fact but we were his leader for awhile when that wasn't the case going into the visit. Bryant, Redfield, and Folston are all guys that ND was not the leader until after their visit. Same with Nyles Garrett this year. We were not the leader until he visited and then he fell in love. I could probably name a few more from this class alone who were open-minded but not exactly in love with ND prior to visiting and then ND hit it out of the park on their visits. We may not get Cage but it's not at all inconceivable that he could have had MSU as his leader but an OV to ND opened his eyes. The campus is beautiful, especially in the winter, and no other school not named Stanford is going to offer the academic environment and a quality football program that ND does. That includes MSU.

One rather big difference was we had been actively recruiting all of those guys you mentioned for quite awhile. Kelly had regular contact with Redfield for 6-9 months. Bryant listed Alford as his favorite coach prior to picking OU. Point is we haven't had a chance to really for the same bond with Cage that we had with your examples. With that said I still think we have a solid chance at landing him.

That is a good point. Did we not recruit Cage early on but then things got dropped at some point? I thought I read that we were recruiting him but after Dickerson committed we pretty much stopped recruiting all DT's unless they were high 4 or 5 stars like Holley or Solomon. And we also were 12-1 last year which definitely helped our cause. Either way, we often do get guys that didn't necessarily love ND and then fall in love after the visit. ND is a special place. You either love it or hate, very few in betweens.

We had a little contact with Cage but went months without any. Compared to some of those examples you gave its apples and oranges. However, I do agree that visiting ND can and has been a game changer for prospects.

Ugh that sucks. I was kind of optimistic about Cage only because I thought he wasn't a priority for MSU and might not have a spot. If he is a take for them no matter what then I like our chances much less.

I am actually starting to like our odds with both last second DT's. The more little things I hear . . .

Very disappointing update regarding Cage. Basically, MSU went into these visits with what Wiltfong makes seem like an insurmountable lead. Now this isnt coming from Cage but Wiltfong's sources usually seem to be pretty good and he sounds confident here and I don't like that. All in all I'll be surprised if he's wrong here.
