Retiring somewhere outside the US is something that has just recently been talked about between my wife and I, but its a serious consideration now... Although, in fairness we are in our early 30s and we're not French... So we have some time.

Wow, this is a crappy SOTU.
Here is what I heard.
1). I'm going to do what I want to do, screw you congress.
2). Women are forced to work under horrible conditions and need some kind of work protection.. ( I guess FMLA went bye bye).
3). I have a new retirement plan MYIRA, or also known as government bonds.
4). Please, please, please, please sign up for Obamacare..
5). We will trust Iran when they say they won't build a bomb, and we'll talk to them until they build one.

That's about it.

Now if the Republicans spend the next hour talking about Obamacare I might change the channel....hopefully they've moved on to hate other things.

Any chance raising the minimum wage will get an up or down vote in both houses? Not talking about passing just getting a vote.

Republican response didn't suck. It was nice response she seems nice some of the language was redundant to what Obama said but they all use the same talking points so I don't blame her.

Although the response sounded like a hallmark card all nice and charming but it didn't offer an specific ideas. I think Republican party needs offer its specific ideas if they are going secede long term. Okay GOP you want more jobs who doesn't. What specific job killing regulations do you think are hurting the economy. What are your proposals for tax reform. Okay you don't like Obamacare, heck there are elements of it I don't either but what is your healthcare plan? I think they lack ideas.

Although I did though detect a concession on health care "no we shouldn't go back to the way things were" was in the response.

Obama should have called for the legalization of marijuana. In Chicago we got a lot of abandoned warehouses. We can provide some good middle class union jobs turning those warehouses into climate controlled pot growing green houses fully paid for with the taxes that will come from selling the pot.

Rahm Emanuel is still his boy.

I'm dead serious though on legalizing pot. Legalize it, regulate it, and tax it. Will save state and local governments money as it will reduce crime. As the war on drugs has only made crime and poverty worse.

I think theres one thing we can all agree on:

Whether you're liberal or conservative, the State of the Union is always filled with a whooooole lot of crap that will never get done.

Your post got the exact response from me that it deserved.

Let's here your explanation for why rich people should be obligated to pay more taxes.

Today's Republicans are a “one-trick pony”: we must cut taxes to revive the economy, they say. High taxes stifle entrepreneurial activity (even if rich people invest mainly in money-market or equity funds). Supply-side economics argued that, if we cut tax rates, the government would get more back in tax revenues than before because the rich taxpayers would be incentivized to work harder or some such thing. In fact, the Reagan and Bush conservative Republicans ran up the deficit as never before.

In the mid 1970s, Bill Simon, Secretary of the Treasury in Gerald Ford’s administration, went on a national speaking tour to promote the free-enterprise system. It was so successful that Ford asked him to discontinue the campaign because Simon was threatening to overshadow the President who was preparing to run for re-election. Today, the man who orchestrated Simon’s campaign, James N. Sites, is passionately advocating that taxes be increased on the rich. He and other conservative stalwarts see a danger of “economic royalism”.

The American middle class is based on a reasonably equal distribution of national income. Instead, as Sites points out, the share of national wealth held by the richest one percent of the population went from 19.9% in 1976 to 34.6% in 2007. In 1960, corporate CEOs were earning 42 times an average worker's pay; by 2007, it had increased to 344 times the average worker's pay.

Meanwhile, the marginal tax rate in the highest income bracket dropped from 91% (which was too high I think) in 1963 to 39.6% in 2003. The Bush administration then cut the rate further from 39.6% to 35% until it was raised again back to 39.6 in January 2013. In fact, the super rich pay an average of 22 % of their income in federal taxes because of special breaks given to income from capital gains and dividends.

It's time to stop believing in the fairy tale that tax cuts for the rich translate into increased entrepreneurial activity that produces jobs. No, jobs are created when there is a market for particular goods and services; and that happens when the masses of people have adequate incomes and want those products.

The rich should shoulder their fair share of the cost of running government. That they do not is testimony to the undue influence that rich people have over Congress and the President. We should support a more balanced tax policy that would help the middle class.

This is where we'll never agree. You somehow think that a "fair" share for the rich translates to a "greater" share.

Just came up with my brother and I...

NEVER thought I'd consider it...but the idea is starting to resonate with me. Reality is, I'd expect it might be tough to get momma away from her grand babies when they start coming...so I gotta think hard about doing it sooner than later so the kids go too...:)

I agree with most of this...but I think the model for the response that works best is to graciously disagree and get out ...ESPECIALLY if one of your criticisms is the President is a lot of hat, and not much cowboy...ya know.

The thing is taxes are almost at an all time low in this country so if the trickle down effect actually worked , as reps say, we should have the lowest unemployment of all time, but reps keep saying how terrible the economy is and how there are no good paying jobs. They can't keep playing both side of the fence. I

I'm voting anarchy. I'll use my tax dollars on firearms, barricades, and medical supplies. Now I just need a politician that won't run as my representative and may or may not have my best interests at heart.
