It really hasn't been that long since the last book. It's been about 2 years right now. The Meereenese knot is done. Victarion, Tyrion, Selmy, Jorah, etc. have all found their way to Meereen. Unless there is a similar issue this time, I don't think it would take the famous 10 years for what was essentially one giant book.

I agree. I'm hopeful that it's downhill from here and book 7 will come quickly.

If he expands book 7 to two books, God help us.

Just read this intriguing fan theory on /r/asoiaf. Melisandre as the daughter of Bloodraven and Shiera Seastar definitely has potential.

Huh, interesting ...

It occurred to me too that GRRM has a new prequel story coming out as part of a book of short stories that he co-edited. The title of the edited volume is "Dangerous Women." I wonder if we will get some relevant info there. I think the book is out in early December, so I guess we'll see.

I'm not positive, but I feel like I remember reading that "Dangerous Women" will be excerpts from existing material, similar to the "Blood of the Dragon" novella that covered some of the Daenerys chapters.

Edit: I'm wrong.

Didn't want to post in the show thread that just popped up for fear of even hinting at a big spoiler... so what are the chances they open the new season with a bang with Joffrey's wedding?

Concerning the books, it makes sense in terms of the timeline. It would basically kill Sansa and Littlefinger's storylines for the whole season (unless they "expand" and show their trip to the Eyrie), but it would set up a nice connection between an imprisoned Tyrion and Oberyn Martel for several episodes before the trial-by-combat.

What say you all?

The trend has been for the "big event" of a season (Ned Stark, Blackwater, Red Wedding) to come in the second-to-last episode. I'm not sure if they'd be able to push it off that far unless they stayed away from King's Landing entirely for most of the season. My guess is that you're probably right, with the following events all candidates for the last "big event" of the season:

Lady Stoneheart reveal
Battle of Castle Black
Death of Tywin

EDIT: The more I think of it, the more your theory makes sense. Book readers know that Tywin is the "big villian" of the Lannister family and that Joffrey is a pissy little shitstain, but TV viewers absolutely loathe Joffrey. If they get him out of the way early, it will give time for them to establish just how much of a bo$$ Tywin is so that people hate him enough for his death to be a big payoff. They've taken an interesting route with Margaery in the show so we'll see where that goes, too.

I think the conclusion of the Battle of Castle Black, where things look pretty bad for the Watch/Jon Snow until Stannis appears and saves the day, will be the penultimate episode. I think they will treat it like the Blackwater episode where they focus only on the Wall, but then they will shock viewers in the last couple of minutes by showing Tyrion getting out and shooting Tywin. I picture those last two or three minutes to be completely silent, minus the sounds of Tyrion climbing through the secret passages, until a final dialogue between Tyrion and Tywin. Tyrion will shoot him, watch him die, and then the episode will end. It will be the icing on the cake for viewers that had no idea what was coming or how the Night's Watch/Jon Snow would survive.

The final episode would tie things up with the other storylines, like Jon Snow being elected Lord Commander and being offered Lordship of Winterfell, etc. But then the HUGE twist would shock viewers by showing Lady Stoneheart as the last scene of the season.

At least that's how I would play it.

I don't think they'll wait to the last episode to bring in Lady Stone Heart. Other than that, I like your set up.

It is known?

Or are you guessing?

For the Battle, yes.

The Purple Wedding is probably episode 2. GRRM is writing it and it makes the most sense to have it then. The Purple Wedding happened like 3 chapters after the Red Wedding.

Also I would bet season 4 ends like ASOS ends with Stoneheart as the last scene. There is no reason to introduce her earlier than that.

Wasn't surprised by the result. Guy is my favorite character in the series, though I really hate the direction GRRM took him in Dance with Dragons.

I had been hoping that episode 9 would end with the Viper/Mountain fight. That is possibly my favorite chapter in the series to date (along when we were introduced to Manderly's meat pies). I was thinking to myself "omg finish him you stupid Dornish idiot", but saw the ending coming. I suppose they'll show that scene near the end of the season but before 9... perhaps 8.

I think they'll end episode 9 with Tyrion murdering Tywin, while the finale will be centered around his escape. They'll probably introduce Lady Stoneheart in the last episode as well, though I won't really care either way. I've found her character to be quite boring, and I don't think she's going to play a major role going forward, other than to seek revenge on the Lannisters.

I understand them going with the Battle of the Wall as the penultimate episode, considering its ramifications for the series going forward... but am I the only one who was way more interested in the Viper/Mountain battle?

As for Joff... yeah, I think the Purple Wedding will take place during the first couple of episodes. Nothing will be more satisfying to the TV audience than seeing him choke to death.

Edit: Battle of Castle Black. Oops.

I'm predicting:
The season opens up with the Red Viper entering King's Landing.
Joff's wedding will be by episode three.
Battle for Castle Black will be the big episode nine moment.
Episode ten will be filled with The death of the Hound, Arya getting on the ship, Sansa entering the Eyrie, then ends with Tyrion offing Daddy and escaping.
