Isn't this the third year in a row that Davaris is in trouble? And nothing has happend ever? It's not "planet Cierre" but he seems to live in his own world.

If he is indeed struggling...I'm cheering for him. He'd probably be a 3.0 student if all he had to do was school. He is swimming in a very tough academic environment, and he has the equivalent to a full time job in Football. If he is getting a 2.0...shit, You go DD. Get the sheepskin and it means the same rather a 2.0 or a 4.0...then go get the $$$ next year.

But you also have to factor in the possibility of being injured or just not performing that well. In those scenarios, he still doesn't get guaranteed money next year. But he would presumably have his degree so there's that.

I was a big advocate of Cierre staying another year because he needed to mature more and I was right about that. Davaris situation isn't really the same.

In those scenarios he at least gets his degree and he will get his shot at the league nevertheless (almost no injury is career ending nowadays). He gets to potentially get more money, a degree and more guaranteed to stay in the league longer if he stays. To me its a no brainier.

Are you serious? You think DD spends his Thursday nights hunkered down in the library getting his study on, with the only limitations to his classroom success coming from his time committment to the football team?

I bet he's never at parties or getting drunk or high with his boys or anything.

"The equivalent to a full time job in Football" is the biggest bullshit argument I hear to justify these kids' behavior. Get this... Some people can rip off way above a 3.0 with the "equivalent of a full time job" in an actual FULL TIME JOB.

Too bad they can't catch a football.

I don't need DD to be a Rhodes scholar or get accepted to Duke Law, but maintaining eligibility? C'mon bro. I knew some dumb kids when I was at ND but 2.0 is an effort thing, not an ability thing.

I don't follow this at all. So you never went to parties in college? That's part of the life of a college student. I don't think phgreek was condoning Daniels' corner-cutting; I think he was just saying that he has less time to complete his schoolwork than the average college student, which is certainly true. I don't know what it proves that there are some people who work full-time and go to school full-time. Such people are exceptional. If we are holding our players to that standard, we're really gonna shrink the recruiting pool.

This is true enough though. Again, not condoning Daniels's actions.

Maybe my first and second posts should have gone together. I don't have a problem if guys go to parties if their eligibility isn't in peril. The thing I objected to is the notion that there aren't enough hours in the day to both play football and keep your grades up. Get your grades where they need to be, then party your heart out.

Which might be hampered by his commitment to the football team? These guys take a beating for 6 months of the year for our pleasure. Its conceivable they might not be able to give 100% mental focus while playing the season. Studying for 15-19 hours of classes was hard enough as a freshmen at a desk, but on the road? Laid up in the bed with a hammy? Sprained knee? Good lord......

I don't know man. I just feel like there's not that much studying required to get a 2.0. I didn't know many football players in my four years, but I had a few baseball, fencing, and swimming friends and the opportunities they have for tutors and structured study hall makes it very difficult to fall through the cracks.

Who cares what you need...

Secondly, who said he cant make a 2.0?
Uh, sources close to the situation, apparently.

Great. point. A lot of times people reduce the issue to whether athletes have enough time to complete their work. It's not just time ... it's time in which they are physically able to concentrate on schoolwork. After pushing your body to the limits of physical exhaustion in training, it's pretty damn tough to do 6 hours of hard studying.

So I think a certain amount of sympathy for athletes is warranted, but at the same time the deal's the deal. They are getting free college and they have to play football for it, so no lack of effort can be excused.
