This article was posted a few months ago, but still insightful nonetheless.

Not exactly a surprise. My friend who played on the 99 championship team said he never went to class that year.

What really hit me the first time I saw this, and again reading it for a second time, is the degree to which I personally have misplaced blame for players at football factories not going to class and acting stupidly.

from the article:
if I kept a schedule like these kids do, I'd probably consider popping a lot of greenies. I don't know what they do over there across campus, in a gleaming behemoth of a new training facility, bankrolled by the booster club that's now developing a series of strip malls and condos and drinkeries for alumni on the once-artsy industrial flatlands outside the football stadium. ("Collegetown," they're calling it.) Whatever our players do takes up so much physical and psychic energy that it's amazing they don't ever kill anyone, much less that they make it to class. But most of them are fine. There are dozens of successful, placid ones on the roster every year.

One of Derek's better-adjusted athletes said it wasn't the practices or the physical abuse that bothered him, but how the coaches force-fed him and his teammates. "They watch me clean the plate," the player told Derek. "'You let that settle and then go lift.'" That's in addition to the supervised supplement-swallowing, the pills and powders of who the hell knows what. "He looks down at me, this monster man, this beast, and now he's got kid eyes," Derek tells me, "and he says to me: 'Mister Derek, sometimes I'm not hungry anymore.'"

That wounded Seminole is now a successful NFL player.

We don't know what our role is in these players' lives. Do they even need our classes? Do they need to be cultural critics, or cogent writers? "You're gonna get 3,600 calories shoveled in you and then you're going to lift and run and hit each other. And then I'm gonna ask you to write an eight-page paper on Q-Tip ads?" Derek marvels. "That's a lot that they're leaving up to an underpaid staff to get these kids to do."

These kids are nothing but cogs in a machine that's expected to pay for the entire athletic department, new buildings, and contribute back to academics besides. Fencing, Volleyball, any other non-revenue sport, and improvements to their facilities, are quite literally paid for with the sweat of football players, whether they want to or not. When you really think about it, the millionaire coaches, athletic directors and staff, and everyone constantly clamoring for more money at football factories are really the ones to blame.

The Golson and Grabt incidents hurt their respective teams but it was the right thing to do. It gave each of these men a chance to learn from their mistakes and grow from human beings. It's a sign that ND cares about it's athletes by showing them tough love when necessary. Being passed through at FSU might help you win some more football games but you're doing a huge disservice to these men. It's what lead to guys becoming an Aaron Hernandez despite years of college education.

I just can't believe a university could develop a culture like this...where professors are FANBOYS and feel conflicted...AT ALL.

THIS is the environment the NCAA and college presidents have fostered?

I think people need to sue the shit out of the NCAA and university presidents who continue to profit from these kids, yet fail them on the academic side...

I don't want to pay for them, so it is high time these programs start paying some taxes based on grad rate and minimum competence exams...

wanna win a national title...cool, but some of that $$$$ is going to feed these kids who did not get an education...sick of this shit!

Just further proof that CFB is a mess, its not a level playing field and its almost impossible in terms of enforcement, any NCAA president who tries to rock the $$$ boat will be swiftly dealt with...........I don't know how to fix it, too many people getting rich on CFB, they will keep greasing the skids.

I don't think there is a viable fix anymore... now that ESPN and the like have such a hold on it??? nope. I miss the days when CFB was regional, every major bowl mattered, and the sport was still amateur enough that having a spilt championship wasn’t some criminal idea… Now every bowl is spread out and a playoff is being thrown in for no other reason at all other than money.

Just saying that a college can mold a person like him into a better person but many don't as a result of this type of culture. Yes, a few bad eggs will slip through everywhere or refuse change but most programs don't even try.

Aaron Hernandez had problems before he came to the University of Florida.

I agree, just think a better example could have been used than a dude that murdered a couple of people.

“We champions,” Winston said. “We can share that. We are champions together. And through everything that we went through. Through all the haters. Through every single thing, we came our victorious. God did this. I’m so blessed. He’s so blessed. All the stuff that he handled with Ethan (Fisher, the coach’s son) and he come out here and coach us? That touched me. And it’s nobody but God. It’s nobody.”

I'm gonna sound like an asshole but Inwish we did that. I know it's wrong but no matter what we do we are the villains so we might as well try to be a little more light on acedmics because acedmics don't get respect amoung college football fans and writers championship rings do that and we haven't gotten one in years. Is it bad to think this way? Yes. But as much as I love notre dame I'm not a student there and I want to see us win. We don't have to be dirty but we need to do something to compete with some of this

I hear FSU has a great criminology program.

And most of the team is in this. Something smells fishy.

Part of the problem is on the academic side. There's an arms race going on no one talks about. Schools are building more and more new buildings and adding technology and equipment they can barely pay for in order to attract the best teachers and students which in turn raise the quality of the schools degrees. It's easier for them to get money from the football and basketball programs than to keep hitting up the alumni for money. Granted football isn't going to pay for all of it, but it does make life easier if you athletic programs are successful. Butler saw a 30% increase in application after their final four runs.

This stuff makes me sick. I have always been in thinking that your college tuition being paid as an athelete was good enough because that's the whole idea of college is an education. Now starting to think these kids should get paid since they're not even getting that. I don't know if I would want to be a fan of college sports anymore. It's gone to hell for sure I hope this crap gets stopped, but it isn't happening. Winning the right way every ten years is better than being dirty and in the hunt every year in reality, but as fans it's hard to tthink this way.

If they're going to pay non-NFL football players, I'd rather see the NFL start a minor league system. Universities would still compete with one another, but it would be the two- and three-star kids who really want an education while all the prima donnas go right from high school to the NFL Jr.

The issue is the NFL would never pay for a league like that because it wouldn't make any money. They have the sweetest deal of all right now. They have a minor league that they don't have to pay anything for.

Why wouldn't they make any money? Even most AAA baseball clubs break even at worst.

He's a country boy from Alabama so it's not surprising that he would sound like that, especially after the adrenaline of winning a national championship. He was a 4.0 student in HS and did well enough for Stanford to recruit him.

Dude, I am a country boy from the "backwoods" and the form of english is crap. You know what they say about excuses... Also, so what, if Stanford recruited him, ND recruits kids that that can't cut it. Dont be naive and think the he might not have been passed along at Hueytown. Lastly, if he is as smart as "his" GPA suggest, he is an ignorant fool to present himself and his university at that level.

Then I would not be surprised if you sounded unintelligent when you talk. He just won the championship. He was excited and overcome with adrenaline. Jimbo Fisher's talk made little sense as well. He wasn't giving a pre-written speech while running for office. He was a 19-year-old talking to a reporter after a game.
