Questions about ND bowls after this season

I know next season we have tie ins to all bowl games the ACC has tie ins to which at least means that if we don't make the playoffs we won't find ourselves dumpster diving for bowl bids like we have I. Years past. However I have some questions for those that understand how this system works better than I do. I know we can be selected to the Orange Bowl two times every 10 years in this agreement however lets say we have used up our two Orange Bowl trips and had an 11-1 or 10-2 season and miss the playoffs will the conference tie ins with the other major bowls force us to have to play in the Sun or Russle Athletics bowl even with such a record? Also if during a year when the Orange Bowl is part of the playoffs and we have a year like I mentioned would we be able to get a Rose, Sugar, Fiesta, or Cotton Bowl bid that year or would we be bound to ACC bowls? I apologize if these are stupid questions but the whole bowl system even with the playoffs confuses me and if someone could help explain it I would appreciate it.

In that case, they would be considered an AT-LARGE candidate and be accepted to a "BCS-type" bowl. The only difference the playoff makes is that there will be more room for at-large teams, which means ND's chances of going to a "BCS"-type bowl increases.

BTW, did they say that the Cotton Bowl is now a "BCS-type" bowl game? (like Orange, Sugar, Fiesta and Rose are now), because as it stands, the ACC has no tie-in to the Cotton Bowl.

Rose Bowl — Big Ten #1 vs. Pac-12 #1
Sugar Bowl — SEC #1 vs. Big 12 #1
Orange Bowl — ACC #1 vs. SEC #2, Big Ten #2, or Notre Dame
Cotton Bowl — at-large or "Group of Five"
Fiesta Bowl — at-large or "Group of Five"
Chick-Fil-A Bowl — at-large or "Group of Five"

What's Group of Five?

Also, didn't ND have a deal with the ACC where they only had to be within 1 game of an ACC team to qualify for a respective bowl? In other words, say the ACC Chick Fil A team was 9-3, then ND could be 8-4 and selected ahead of that team?

Finally, can ND really only be selected for the Orange Bowl twice every 10 years?

If I'm not mistaken, the "Group of Five" is the American, Mountain West, Conference USA, MAC, and Sun Belt conferences. It's if one of the teams from one of those conferences is ranked higher than a certain ranking, they get a spot in one of the major bowl games.

Yes The Cotton Bowl is now a "elite" bowl again. Starting next year.

I wish they would make the chik-fil-a bowl change back to the peach bowl if it's going to be considered an elite bowl.

One of the more difficult adjustments I had to the BCS was the Cotton Bowl being dropped out of the "Big Bowl" grouping...

Yeah. But you know, the Cotton has consistently been my favorite bowl over the last 10-15 years. Seems like it's a good or intriguing match up every year.

Also seems like it's on a Friday night every year too...which sucks for a swinging bachelor such as myself though.

When USC was rolling I was at a bar and some loud mouthed SC 'fan' who couldn't tell me who their starting QB was before Lienart (and this was maybe three/four year after Palmer mind you) wouldn't stop coming at me over my ND gear... he kept on with this ‘when was the last game ND won’ crap… When I stated we won two back to back Cotton Bowls in the 90’s he came back with “that’s not a big game dawg” and laughed…

That was one of the worst bar fights I’ve ever been a part of… blood in the streets, one time, girlfriends crying… ah, the good ole days... ... ... ... okay, maybe that last part was exaggerated ... but it makes the story better. :)

(for the record I'm sure that douche bag roots for UCLA, or hell, even bama nowadays)

Fried chicken > fruit.

That's just the way it is, son.

True but the advertisement on just makes it seem like a like a sub par game. At work we watch a lot of bowls and casual fans have always laughed at games like the chik-fil-a, capital one, russel athletic, and Buffalo Wild Wings bowls. But they took the pinstripe, holiday, and New Mexico bowls a bit more seriously. Just my opinion I know there's too much money to be made for chik-fil-a to change it back.

I agree it shouldn't have an advertisement in the name. They should just call it, "Fried Chicken Bowl".

This is separate from the four-team playoff, right?

So, if this year, assuming 1-4 in BCS standings make the playoff (FSU, Auburn, Bama and MSU) and breaking down by straight BCS standings (I realize there are other factors), it'd go like this:

Rose: Big Ten 2 (OSU) vs Pac 12 1 (Stanford)
Sugar: SEC 3 (Mizzou) vs. Big 12 1 (Baylor)
Orange: ACC 2 (Clemson) vs. SEC 3 (SCar - except maybe flip Mizzou and SCar to avoid a rematch and b/c SCar beat Mizzou)
Cotton: Oregon vs ASU (Did they play? Even if not, maybe swap in LSU here to avoid a conference game)
Fiesta: Okie vs. UCF
Chicken: Okie State vs. LSU (or maybe Louisville b/c they had a significantly better record)

Rough estimates. But not bad. Not bad at all. But I'm not sure how "major" that Chicken bowl is. And

At least the BCS has retained their original names with the corporate logo.

Remember crap like the "Bluebonnet" and "Blockbuster" bowl?

From what I understand the 2 of the top bowl games would be the first round of the playoffs. If I could control the college football post season I would take the top eight teams for the playoffs. The first round will be 4 major bowls games with a rotation of what bowl will get the number one seeded team. One would play eight, two would play seven, etc. The SEC, Pac 12, Big 12, Big Ten, and ACC champs would get automatic bids and the remaining 3 at large bids. The second round would be played at neutral sites like the regionals in the NCAA tourney. The title game would be the week in between the NFL conference championships and the Super Bowl giving football fans everywhere 3 awesome weeks of football. It'll never happen but it would be pretty sweet

Someone help me out. I get that the six bowls "rotate through" the semifinals, so next year the Rose Bowl and the Sugar Bowl ARE the semifinals. What do the traditional Rose Bowl opponents (Big 10 and Pac 12 chapions) do, assuming they're not in the semifinals? Are traditional "big bowl" matchups out the window? Presumably, the non-semifinal "big bowls" will be a notch less compelling because it's more likely that we see conference #2s battling it out than champion versus champion.

I hate this.

I've been saying this for a while now too. I think it could definitely happen. I don't know much about the inner workings here so maybe you can help me out. Why do you think this will never happen?

SIAP: I'm curious to see attendance numbers in the semi-final games. Doubt many people would shell out a thousand bucks to attend the semis, then another 2 a week later for the finals.

Those are crazy ND-Bama in Miami numbers. The championship this year was selling BELOW face value on some outlets. My guess is you see the semifinals sell out with tickets in the neighborhood of $200, depending on geography.

I just don't think it would happen because it would cut into recruiting time too much before national signing day. But that would be my dream post season.
