Ahhhh. I'm sure the relationship these coaches build with players goes beyond simple "run play X," unfortunately we're in a system where kids aren't able to up and leave just as easy as their coaches.

I hope (trust) that many of these kids picked Notre Dame for much, much more than a particularly close connection with an assistant given the environment they must surely recognize. Except Alford. Man I'd miss him haha.

1. We all knew this was going to happen one day.
2. Congrats to Bob.
3. This is not the end of the world. Strangely this isn't freaking me out at all.
4. Yes...go UCONN go UCONN! My alma mater

Am I the only one who doesn't think this is such a bad thing? I wouldn't go so far as to say Diaco was overrated, but I certainly don't think he is irreplaceable like Kelly is. Losing Martin and Diaco in the same season SUCKS, but they are both much less important than keeping Kelly. My ONLY concern about Diaco is the recruiting impact, mainly Morgan since that would have been his position coach. Other than that, I don't see this as "program changing" and I highly doubt this affect's Tuitt's decision.

See, this is how I feel. Success breeds attraction from other programs, and it attracts good assistant coaches TO NOTRE DAME because they know they'll get great exposure and a possibility at top jobs elsewhere. And I'd be pretty surprised if Alford and Elliot went to UConn -- they are a bad team in a bad conference.

This would hurt a lot more if Diaco was an elite recruiter.

I assume you're being serious. If so, I completely agree. I think we can easily replace him with someone who is at least as strong with the Xs and Os, and it really wouldn't take much to find someone as strong on the recruiting trail.

Just because he's pissed doesn't mean he's leaving.

BK already has things in place. He knows there is always opportunities for coaches to leave. Kelly will find suitable replacements. Alford won't go to UConn. His opportunity to grow is at ND.

I may be in the minority, but we'll be fine.

That's what I'm saying. Outside of the Ishaq recruitment, I rarely see any recruits raving about Diaco. It's always Kelly, Alford, and Denbrock.

Diaco had great talent and gave up 40 to Michigan, couldn't stop Navy, and it apparently takes a master's degree to figure out his defense.

I'm over it.

The coaches have TWO months to convince recruits to come here because we are ND. That's plenty of time for Kelly to right the ship.

I am being serious. Diaco was a player favorite, and his style of D kept points low and was great #'s wise. But he wasn't a good recruiter and we did not generate loss plays and / or turnovers.

This hurts short term, but I don't think this is as big of a blow as some are making it out to be. If anything, it reinforces that we are becoming a successful program, that other schools are chomping at the bit for our assistants. Means ND / BK are doing something right.

I don't think so. He has stated he was good with members of his staff leaving for leadership positions (i.e. Head Coaching jobs). He said that if people interviewed for Coordinator jobs (or anything less than HC jobs), they better get hired because thy wouldn't have their current job to come back to.

I've always wondered about this. Kelly does say stuff like this all the time, but wouldn't it be unreasonable to expect someone like Elston not to jump at the right DC job? Or Hiestand at the right OC job? It sounds like Kelly would object to that, but I've never understood why. Maybe I'm misunderstanding him and he would consider a coordinator position a "leadership position" as long as it's a step up.

How many turnovers did we force this year with two 1st round draft picks on the DL?

4?

On to the next one.

That's the first thing I thought when I saw the news. Maybe we can get someone that can "simplify" the 3-4 and let the athletes run.

And BK can let the offense off the leash while we're at it.

II caught up with Hayes, who reconfirmed his commitment.

"Student-athletes and players know this is a business. There's a lot of revenue. Coaches want to work their way up the ladder. Someday he wants to be a coach in the NFL."
