I thought reports were he was going to be able to practice but not participate in the bowl game.

There were reports and considerable discussion about his being able to practice but not play.

I don't know and the article doesn't state if this is NCAA rule ( practicing) or UND.

I do know that the NCAA requires player who have not been active (playing/practicing) are required to go through conditioning and acclimation training before any contact similar to Sping Ball and preseason camp working out in shells, etc.

IF it is not an NCAA rule (practice), Kelly may not want the distraction in practice. They need to be focused on the bowl game and the eligible players getting reps. They don't need to be focused on the 2014 season.

Daniels still needs to focus on his reads so he's on the same page as his QB in the bowl and not getting used to the speed of Golson's ball until the Spring.

Great to hear.

Would have been good to have Golson run the scout team for the bowl game, but whatever. I expect to see him playing with an extra step by the time the B-G game comes around.

Really glad to hear this, excited for the team, and am proud of EG. I tend to agree with this post though, EG's participation could become an unneeded distraction to this years team.

I don't see how EG running scout team O for a few weeks could be a big distraction. Not a huge gain or loss either way. January/ conditioning/ Longo time/ Camp Kelly/ spring ball is here before we know it.

Initially I felt the same way. But thinking about it, all it would take to start a shitstorm would be one quote along the lines of, "he's giving us a better look than we've seen all year in practice" or "it looks like he could win games already."

People would take it and run with it and turn it into something it's not.

I wonder if any of the upper classmen and outgoing seniors would hold animosity towards him… that may play into it???

Crossed my mind today. I'm wondering if any of the players, coaches, or even BK, will have trust or abandonment issues with him. Just wondering if anyone associated with the team will have issue with him because he alienated the team.

A genuine question here: how did Golson alienate the team? Just wondering if there is anything that I am not aware of. Thanks in advance.

It may be a stretch either way, but I can’t see coaches or underclassmen having issues, at least not any that would cause more issues than it would be worth… but maybe TJ (Just for an example) or other outgoing players have it in their mind that he derailed their final season??? I guess it would be possible BK is protecting against that??

I just know it seems when you fuck up and get the doghouse with Bk, you don't just walk right out.

I think what I stated comes across harsher than its meant. But he was expected to return the next season following an undefeated season, as the QB, the on the field leader of the offense. He got suspended from school and couldn't play. His leaving wasn't planned and nobody was aware until it happened. Others were left to pick up the responsibilities he should have had. (Rees) which obviously was a lesser performer. We noticed it as fans, I'm sure the teammates on the field did as well. I could see some looking at the record this season and holding some blame or responsibility towards the player that should have been there to lead them to a better record, but cheated instead. His selfish actions affected the team as a whole. I know he understands this and I'm not lecturing him on it. But I could see teammates feeling cheated by the results of the season that were different than they expected because of his selfish actions. Guess I consider that alienating the team.

Hopefully he won't have too much rust come next season and can help us get 10 wins or so next season!

You aren't kidding. There are a few examples from BK's days at Cincy and a few recently at ND that show how hard it is to get back in his good graces.

It was interesting to me that BK wasn't aware of the SI interview before Golson did it.

It was interesting to me that Kelly wasn't aware of Nix signing with an agent. I mean, wtf?? How are you not on top of these things as the head coach?

Where did he say he didn't know? What I read was that he wasn't involved in the decision, not that he wasn't aware of it.

Sorry I'm on my phone and couldn't embed. Just seemed a little odd there wasn't any communication there and that Nix wouldn't finish the season as part of the team.

Was never totally sold on EG when he first came to ND, and later with his struggles to pick up the play book. Totally sucking down the kool aid now. Could be a very special year for him. Just sucks he'll have to almost start over creating chemistry with the WRs and TEs. Can't wait to see him distribute the ball around, especially to Hercules, DD, CB, and all the young studs who showed promise this year. I hope ND can find answers in several other position groups as I think EG will straight up kill it next season.
